In Creative, keys and themed keycards are objective items that can satisfy requirements set by an island’s creator, often through a Conditional Button. A separate Creative Bank Vault device can be configured to require Thermite. Battle Royale rules can change by season; the available official information does not establish which Chapter 7 Season 4 vaults accept keys or how to open them, so use the current map and on-screen prompt.
How keys work in Fortnite Creative
Epic describes Creative objective items as items that can grant access to areas or unlock in-game objectives. Its examples include a standard Key and themed keycards associated with named locations. These are Creative inventory items, not a list of current Battle Royale loot. Epic’s Objective Items documentation explains the system.

On an island that uses keys, the creator configures what item a player must have. For example, a Conditional Button can require a specific objective item to unlock a door. A key is not a universal master key: it must match the item requirement configured for that island.
Use a key or keycard at a Conditional Button
- Find and pick up the key or keycard required by the island. The creator determines which item is needed.
- Look for the matching Conditional Button or the relevant item-required objective. Follow any directions or visual cues the island provides.
- Interact with the button or objective and check the on-screen requirement. The exact interaction and whether the item is consumed depend on the island’s configuration.
Epic’s May 25, 2021 v16.50 announcement says registered keycards can work with Conditional Button and Capture Area devices. It also describes a visual guide to the appropriate Conditional Button when a registered Key Item is equipped. That is documented Creative behavior, not evidence of current Battle Royale rules.

Opening a vault in Creative
Creative’s Bank Vault is a configurable device, separate from the objective-item button system. Its “Require Thermite” setting determines whether a player needs Thermite when interacting with the vault door to start the opening process. Epic documents this setting in its Bank Vault device guide.
Whether Thermite is needed depends on the creator’s device settings. Follow the island’s on-screen instructions; do not assume every Fortnite vault uses this rule.

What to do with keys in Battle Royale
Battle Royale key and vault mechanics are season- and update-dependent. Epic’s August 20, 2026 announcement identifies Chapter 7 Season 4 as Override but does not specify which vaults accept keys, where keys appear, or the current interaction sequence. Older season guides may not match the live game.
In a current match, check the map and the interaction prompt at the locked area. Those are the safest sources for what that match’s version requires. This article cannot give a verified current vault route, key location, item tier, or quantity for Battle Royale.
