Recommendation tools can help you find candidates, but sampling a trailer or opening episode is a better final check than relying on a genre label or popularity score.
What do you want from your next show?
Before searching, identify what made the finished series work for you. Was it the relationships, brisk pacing, setting, humor, tension, subject matter, short episodes or satisfying ending? Choose just one or two qualities to carry forward. Trying to reproduce every part of a favorite can leave you with an unnecessarily narrow search.

Then decide whether you want continuity or contrast. You might stay close to the same genre or tone, look for another show associated with a creator or performer you like, or choose something deliberately lighter, darker or otherwise different. Genre makes a useful first filter, but it is only a label: IMDb says its More Like This suggestions consider factors including genre, country of origin and actors, among other information.
How can you find candidates?
Use personalized recommendations as a starting point
IMDb says its Top Picks recommendations use your ratings and Watchlist activity, comparing those signals with ratings from people with similar tastes. It also says you can see the titles that informed a recommendation. That context can help you judge whether a suggestion reflects the qualities you care about or merely overlaps in a more superficial way. IMDb describes new ratings as affecting recommendations immediately, and says rating more titles and adding Watchlist items can improve personalization; these are claims about IMDb’s feature, not a guarantee of a good match for every viewer. IMDb’s What to Watch page also groups curated guide content, Fan Favorites, Watchlist items and Most Popular titles. Those categories answer different questions: a popular title is not necessarily a personalized fit, and a saved title is one you chose to keep track of, not proof that it suits your current mood.
Browse similarity lists, but check the actual show
IMDb describes More Like This as suggestions based on similarities to the title you are browsing. The options can vary by device; newer titles may take time to gather enough information to be suggested, while older titles can appear more often. Look beyond recommendation engines
Recommendations are one route, not the only one. Searching for a creator or performer you enjoyed, browsing an editorial guide, or asking a friend what they liked about a show can produce different candidates. For any suggestion, note the specific reason it made the list—shared humor, a similar setting, strong character relationships—rather than assuming two shows are alike in every way.
How should you compare the shortlist?
Keep only a few promising titles and compare them on the things that matter to you now. A quick note beside each title can make the choice clearer than scrolling through endless recommendations.

For availability, JustWatch describes a search across streaming platforms, recommendations and a unified Watchlist. Its listings and catalog coverage can vary by market, so check your own country and confirm availability when you are ready to watch; services and catalogs change.
How can you check a show’s viewing status?
If you use JustWatch’s TV Show Tracking, its support documentation says you can track watched seasons or episodes and distinguish shows that have not started, are currently being watched, are caught up or have been completely seen. Some tracked views can be filtered by provider. This can help you keep your own viewing organized, but it does not establish that a show is complete or available everywhere. How do you make the final choice?
- Write down your one or two must-have qualities. For example: warm character relationships and episodes short enough for a weeknight.
- Gather a handful of candidates. Try personalized recommendations, similarity lists and a non-algorithmic source such as an editorial guide or a friend’s suggestion.
- Remove options that do not fit your practical constraints. Check local availability, episode commitment and whether you are willing to follow an ongoing series.
- Break a tie with one current preference. Choose the lighter show, the shorter episodes or the completed series—whichever matters most to you right now.
- Sample before committing. Watch a trailer or the opening episode and ask whether the premise, tone and pacing are working for you. If not, move to the next option.
This is a practical way to make the choice manageable, not a tested formula for finding a guaranteed favorite. Popularity and recommendation signals can point you toward a show; your own response to the sample is what matters.
