To play an Amazon IVS stream in JW Player’s web player, load the JW Player library and the Amazon IVS JW provider, then configure a playlist item with the IVS playback URL as file and type: 'ivs'. The integration guide supports JW Player 8.18.4 and later. It is a web-player integration, not a documented native mobile integration.
What you need
- A valid Amazon IVS playback URL for the channel or stream you want to play.
- JW Player 8.18.4 or later, as specified in the Amazon IVS JW Player integration guide.
- The Amazon IVS JW provider script, loaded after or alongside the JW Player library so the provider is available when you set up the player.
The guide’s sample uses provider asset version 1.56.1. AWS release notes dated October 1, 2026 list 1.57.0 for the IVS Web player, including the JW Player integration. Verify the current asset and version in the IVS release notes before deploying rather than assuming the guide’s example URL is the newest.

Because AWS lists a newer integration release than the guide’s sample, use the matching current provider asset version when you implement it. Keep the provider script available before calling setup(); otherwise JW Player may not recognize the ivs playlist type.
Configure an IVS playback item
Pass the IVS playback URL as the playlist item’s file and identify the provider with type: 'ivs'. The following is the minimal setup shape documented by AWS; it assumes both scripts are loaded and IVS_STREAM contains a valid IVS playback URL.

Handle normal playback and IVS-specific events
Use JW Player for ordinary playback
For general playback behavior, use JW Player’s normal event and player APIs, including its on event interface and general error event. This keeps ordinary controls and playback logic within the player interface your page already uses.
Access the underlying IVS player when needed
When you need IVS-specific events, APIs, or enums, listen for JW Player’s providerPlayer event. It supplies ivsPlayer and ivsEvents; attach IVS event listeners to the returned IVS player instance, and remove those listeners when they are no longer needed.
Separate IVS errors from JW Player errors
Handle IVS-specific errors through the IVS player’s error event. Its callback includes the error type, code, source, and human-readable message. Handle general player failures through JW Player’s own error event. Keeping these paths distinct makes it easier to tell whether an issue originates in the IVS playback layer or the surrounding JW Player integration.

Limitations and latency considerations
- Web player only: AWS documents this provider for JW Player’s web player; the cited integration guide does not establish a native mobile implementation.
- No provider casting: Chromecast casting is unsupported by the provider. AWS describes alternative casting approaches outside the player, but says those transitions have higher latency and are not seamless.
- Latency is not guaranteed by JW Player alone: AWS says its own IVS Player is required to achieve low latency and is the only player whose performance AWS can guarantee. The IVS player is exposed beneath JW Player in this integration, but actual end-to-end latency also depends on broadcast location and broadcaster settings. Do not treat this setup as an AWS guarantee of a particular latency.
For a direct comparison with using the native Amazon IVS Player, the practical trade-off is using JW Player’s interface and existing JW Player integration versus using the player AWS says is optimized for IVS playback. The documentation does not establish full feature parity or equivalent performance guarantees. See the Amazon IVS Player documentation.
Content Security Policy and deployment checks
AWS states that the provider API is configured to work with pages using a Content Security Policy (CSP), and points developers to the IVS Web Guide’s CSP section for the exact directives. Check that section against your site’s deployed policy rather than copying a generic policy: the directives needed depend on how your page loads scripts and connects to playback services.
- Confirm the player library and provider script both load successfully in the browser.
- Confirm the playlist item uses the IVS playback URL and the exact
ivstype value. - Check the browser console and network panel for blocked scripts, CSP violations, or playback requests that fail.
- Verify event listeners attach to the JW Player API for ordinary events and to
ivsPlayeronly for IVS-specific events. - Ensure your interface does not promise Chromecast support for this provider.
Troubleshooting
JW Player does not recognize the IVS item
Check that the provider script loaded, that it is the compatible JW integration asset, and that the playlist item has type: 'ivs'. Also verify the page is using JW Player 8.18.4 or later.

The stream does not play
Confirm that file contains the IVS playback URL, not a broadcast ingest URL or an unrelated page URL. Then inspect browser network errors, CSP reports, and the relevant JW Player or IVS error event for the failure source and message.
IVS-specific event handling does not run
Wait for the providerPlayer event and use the supplied ivsPlayer instance to register the IVS listener. Standard playback events should instead use JW Player’s ordinary event API.

A casting control appears or casting is expected to work
Set cast: null in the setup configuration to hide casting in JW Player. The provider itself does not support casting; an external casting path is a separate approach and AWS notes it is not seamless and has higher latency.

The provider URL works in the guide but may be behind
The guide’s sample asset URL names 1.56.1, while AWS release notes list 1.57.0 for the Web player and JW integration as of October 1, 2026. Check the release notes and document history for the current version before upgrading or copying the sample.

If your priority is the playback performance AWS can guarantee for IVS, AWS identifies its own Amazon IVS Player as the only player whose performance it can guarantee.
