Inkscape is a free, open-source vector graphics editor, and SVG is its main document format. A straightforward beginner workflow is to draw with editable shapes, arrange and style them, save the SVG as your working file, then export a PNG or PDF copy if needed.
1. Start a document and learn the workspace
Open Inkscape and create a document. The official basics tutorial introduces document creation and saving, zoom and navigation, toolbars, the status bar, and the core tasks you will use in a first drawing: selecting, transforming, grouping, applying fill and stroke, aligning objects, and changing their stacking order. Interface details may differ among Inkscape releases and operating systems.

Think of the page as a workspace containing separate objects. You can select an object to move or resize it, style it, group it with other objects, or change whether it appears in front of or behind them.
2. Build a first drawing with shapes
For geometric artwork, begin with the rectangle, ellipse, star, or spiral tools. These create editable shapes with handles and parameters suited to their type. While an object remains a shape, you can adjust those shape-specific controls rather than editing every point by hand.

Use the selection tool to select a shape and move or resize it. Combine a few basic shapes to make a simple icon or illustration, then use grouping, alignment, and stacking order to organize the result.
When to switch from shapes to paths
Shapes are a good fit when you want regular geometric forms and their type-specific editing handles. A path is more suitable when you need freer, more general editing. You can convert a shape to a path, but you cannot convert that path back into its original shape type with its shape-specific editing behavior intact. Make the conversion only when you need the extra flexibility.

3. Choose a drawing approach that fits the artwork
Inkscape supports more than one way to create vector artwork. The Beginners’ Guide covers geometric shape tools, path tools, tracing a raster image, and automatic features. These approaches can also be combined; you do not have to use one method for an entire drawing.
- Geometric forms: Start with shape tools when regular forms and shape-specific handles are useful.
- Custom contours: Use path tools when the outline needs more general, free-form editing.
- Existing raster image: Consider tracing when you want to turn an image into vector artwork.
- Mixed artwork: Combine approaches when different parts of the illustration call for different tools.
4. Style objects and fix common surprises
Use fill for an object’s interior and stroke for its outline. If a new object appears invisible or has an unexpected color or outline, inspect its fill and stroke before assuming the tool is malfunctioning. Inkscape tools can reuse the last style used with that tool, so a previous setting may carry over to the next object.

As you refine the drawing, select objects to move or resize them, group related elements, align them, and adjust their stacking order. These are the same basic object-management tasks introduced in the official basics tutorial.
5. Save the editable SVG and export a PNG
Save your working drawing as SVG so you retain the Inkscape document for continued editing. PNG is useful when you need a raster image for sharing or another workflow. Inkscape’s PNG export guide describes choosing the exported area, setting the image size, and specifying a filename. The dialog’s exact labels and layout may vary between versions.

- Open the PNG export dialog.
- Choose the area to export: the page, the whole drawing, a selection, or a custom area.
- Set the output image size and filename.
- Export the PNG, then check the saved image to make sure the framing and background are right.
A PNG export may have a transparent background. If you need an opaque background, set the document background’s alpha accordingly before exporting.

PDF can be useful when you want a portable document, but it has a different feature set from SVG and some data may be lost when exporting. Keep the SVG source alongside the PDF if you may want to continue editing the Inkscape document.
