The steps below take you through a small first project, from setup to a usable file.
1. Choose print or screen before creating the document
Adobe InDesign is page-layout software for print and digital publishing, including publications and interactive PDFs. Start by deciding what you are making: for example, a printed brochure, a screen-based document, or a mobile layout. That choice affects the document size, whether pages face each other, and the export format. Adobe provides separate Print, Web, and Mobile categories when creating a document. Adobe’s new-document guide explains the setup options.

Create the document
- Choose File > New > Document.
- Select the category that best fits the destination: Print, Web, or Mobile.
- Choose a preset if one suits the project, then check the document dimensions and page count.
- Set margins and columns to give content a consistent working area and structure.
- For print, ask the printer for its required bleed and output specifications before setting them. There is no single bleed value that fits every print job.
- Create the document. Adobe notes that document settings can be changed later.
For a first project, keep the scope small: a one-page flyer or a short brochure is easier to manage than a large publication.

2. Build the page structure
Use the Pages panel to add pages and arrange their order. If a design has repeated elements—such as a logo, running header, footer, page number, or guide—set them up on a parent page rather than placing each one manually. Pages using that parent can inherit its recurring layout elements. See Adobe’s guide to parent pages.

For documents with flowing copy, text frames can be threaded so text continues from one frame to another. When pages are inserted into a threaded document, the text can flow across the added pages. This is useful for articles or longer brochure text; it is not necessary for a simple one-page design. Adobe’s page and text-flow guidance covers these basics.
3. Add text and graphics, then keep them organized
Add the words and visual material your layout needs, then refine their placement and hierarchy. Adobe’s InDesign beginner tutorials include lessons on adding text and graphics, pages, and placeholder text.

Use layers as the layout grows
Layers let you separate content into manageable groups and control what is visible and which items appear in front of others. For instance, keeping background artwork and foreground text on separate layers makes it easier to select or adjust one without disturbing the other. Adobe explains layer organization in its layers guide.
4. Export a file for its destination
Export only after checking that the file suits its intended use. A printer’s requirements should determine settings for a print-ready PDF; for screen use, choose a format that matches how the design will be viewed or shared.
Rank #3
Export a page, spread, or object as an image
- Choose File > Export.
- Choose JPEG or PNG as the format.
- In the export options, specify whether to export pages, spreads, or selected objects, then confirm the relevant settings and export.
Adobe documents these options in its guide to exporting artwork. InDesign also supports PDF and other publishing options; consult Adobe’s product FAQ for an overview. For a print-ready PDF, follow the print provider’s specifications rather than assuming a general preset will meet them.

A trifold brochure is a useful beginner exercise because it brings together document setup, page structure, text, graphics, and export in one manageable project. Adobe Learn provides a beginner trifold-brochure tutorial that walks through setup, adding visual elements and type, refining the design, and exporting. Adobe also offers editable Stock templates as an optional starting point; downloading them requires an Adobe account with Stock access. See Adobe’s Stock template instructions.
