That does not mean group chat inevitably causes stress: direct evidence is limited, and the studies available examine different settings and communication types. The practical goal is to make chat useful for coordination without turning it into a continuous demand for attention.
How can group chat become stressful?
Chat puts coordination in a shared, visible stream. That can reduce the effort of arranging routine conversations, but it can also bring a steady succession of requests, updates and side discussions into the workday. When people feel obliged to monitor every channel, respond quickly or keep up with conversations that are not relevant to their work, attention is repeatedly pulled away from focused tasks.

The problem is not simply how many messages arrive. Their timing, perceived urgency, relevance and the expectation of a reply all matter. A channel that is quiet most of the day but used for urgent requests can create a different burden from a busy channel of optional updates. Clear norms help people distinguish the two.
What does the evidence actually show?
Notification-led checking and workplace email
A 2016 Microsoft Research study followed 40 information workers for 12 workdays using computer logging, biosensors and daily surveys. More time spent on email was associated with lower perceived productivity and higher stress; people who mainly checked email in response to notifications reported lower productivity than those who self-interrupted. The study was small and examined email habits, not all workplace group chat, so it is evidence about a related interruption pattern—not proof that chat causes stress for every team. Remote work and communication patterns
A 2022 study analyzed emails, calendars, instant messages, calls and work hours for 61,182 US Microsoft employees during the first six months of 2020. Firm-wide remote work was associated with more static and siloed collaboration networks, alongside less synchronous and more asynchronous communication. Because the analysis covered remote work and multiple communication modes, it does not establish that chat alone produced these changes. The study in Nature Human Behaviour.
Chat channels inside one company
A 2022 paper examined 4,300 Slack channels in an R&D department at one multinational IT company and had performance data for 117 groups. It categorized channel types and explored relationships between communication styles and project performance. Its single-company, observational setting makes it useful for understanding how group-chat environments can differ, but not for declaring that one channel style—or chat generally—will improve or damage every team’s performance. - Built for managers who run the meetings: Every workplace conversation has its moment. 150 questions across 3 color-coded categories help you match the right tone to the right room — the icebreaker before a team standup, the prompt that opens a real 1:1, and the question that makes hiring panels and onboarding actually land.
- Work-safe and appropriate for every HR policy: All 150 prompts are curated specifically for the workplace. Think of it as a "say this, not that" guide for team conversations — no awkward dating questions, no prying personal topics, no tricky power-dynamic moments. Whether you're managing peers, managing reports, or just trying to break the ice with a new coworker, every question is one you can comfortably ask — zero prep required.
- Pick the category, set the tone, and lead the room: Yellow for icebreakers (office lunches, meeting warmups, virtual happy hours). Green for 1:1s and growth (career check-ins, performance prep, retros). Brown for alignment (onboarding, kickoffs, culture-fit interviews).
- Enough variety and durability for years of use: 150 distinct prompts keep weekly 1:1s, quarterly retros, sprint planning sessions, and onboarding rounds from going stale. Each 2.5 x 3.5 inch matte-laminated card is built for repeated handling, so the deck holds up as long as the conversations do.
- Designed by people who've actually managed teams: Built for HR pros, scrum masters, first-time managers, and people leaders who'd rather invest in their team than buy another team-building gimmick. Every question is one we'd ask our own teams. Not party trust falls. Not generic icebreakers. Just the kind of workplace conversations that build trust, surface real feedback, get stuck conversations unstuck, and help teams actually connect.
Chat can replace some meetings, but it can also fragment work
Microsoft’s 2022 New Future of Work Report summarizes research indicating that chat can replace some routine meetings, while message volume can create context switching and interrupt focused work. Its practical recommendation is to align communication into bursts, with individual work periods between them. This is guidance for managing communication, not a quantified guarantee that a particular schedule will reduce stress. Microsoft’s report.
These findings address different samples and questions. They do not provide a comparable estimate of how much stress group chat causes across workplaces, nor do they show that a specific messaging product is responsible.

How can a team make chat less overwhelming?
Use norms that make chat’s purpose and urgency legible. The following practices are practical implications of the evidence, not interventions shown in these studies to produce a particular measured effect.
Give channels a clear purpose
- Name what each channel is for, who should join, and whether membership means a person is expected to follow every thread.
- Put a request where the people who need to act can find it; avoid scattering one decision across several overlapping channels.
- Make it clear whether a channel is for discussion, announcements, quick coordination or a durable reference.
Set response-time expectations
- Agree which situations need immediate attention and which can wait until someone is next available.
- Do not treat a message’s presence in chat as proof that it has been read or that a reply is due at once.
- Reserve alerts for messages that genuinely need timely action; encourage people to mute or leave nonessential channels when appropriate.
Protect focus and batch routine updates
- Identify quiet or focus periods when employees are not expected to monitor routine chat.
- Batch recurring updates into predictable communication windows where the work allows it, rather than sending each small update as a separate interruption.
- Leave uninterrupted work periods between communication bursts so employees can concentrate on tasks that need sustained attention.
Use chat for coordination, not as the only record
Chat is useful for quick questions and problem-solving, but an important decision or reference can be hard to recover in a fast-moving conversation. Record durable decisions somewhere the team can find later, and link to that record from chat rather than relying on people to reconstruct the outcome from message history.

Review the norms together
Ask whether people know which messages need action, whether channel membership is useful, and whether quiet periods are respected. Adjust the rules if employees still feel pressure to monitor everything. The aim is dependable coordination—not an arbitrary reduction in messages or a higher volume of chat.

Does switching chat tools solve the problem?
A tool can make certain habits easier or harder, but changing platforms cannot by itself resolve unclear urgency, channel sprawl or expectations of constant availability. The cited evidence does not establish an overall winner among Slack, Microsoft Teams and email.

Slack published a 2020 survey of 1,800 US knowledge workers: 600 Slack users, 600 Microsoft Teams users and 600 email users. Slack reported stronger engagement and job satisfaction among its users. Because this was vendor-published survey evidence, it is not independent causal proof that Slack improves those outcomes or reduces stress. Slack’s survey account.
