How to Use HDMI on a Motherboard or Graphics Card

Use graphics card HDMI for a display driven by a discrete GPU. Motherboard HDMI relies on CPU integrated graphics and may need a BIOS setting when a graphics card is installed.

For a monitor you want driven by a dedicated graphics card, plug the HDMI cable into the card’s own HDMI output. Motherboard HDMI uses the processor’s integrated graphics instead; it works only if the CPU has integrated graphics and the system has that output enabled.

Motherboard HDMI vs. graphics card HDMI: which port should you use?

The two HDMI ports are not interchangeable routes to the same graphics hardware. Choose the one attached to the graphics processor you want to drive the display.

  • Graphics card HDMI: The HDMI socket is on the discrete graphics card, typically on the lower expansion-card area at the back of the case. Use it when you want the dedicated card to drive the monitor.
  • Motherboard HDMI: The socket is on the motherboard’s rear I/O panel, alongside other motherboard connections. It outputs video from graphics built into the processor—not from the discrete card.

Connecting a monitor to motherboard HDMI does not pass the graphics card’s output through the motherboard. If the CPU lacks integrated graphics, the motherboard’s HDMI port cannot produce a picture.

How to connect HDMI to the graphics card

  1. Find the HDMI output on the discrete graphics card at the back of the PC, separate from the motherboard’s rear I/O connections.
  2. Connect the HDMI cable from that port to the monitor or TV.
  3. If the card has an auxiliary power connector, make sure it is connected. ASUS says no special BIOS setting is required to use the discrete-card output path: ASUS: How to connect a monitor to a graphics card.
  4. Turn on the display and select the HDMI input matching the port you used.

How to use motherboard HDMI

Motherboard HDMI uses the processor’s integrated graphics (iGPU). Before relying on it, check the exact processor specifications to confirm it includes graphics, and verify that the processor is supported by the motherboard with the installed BIOS version. Matching CPU and motherboard sockets alone does not guarantee compatibility.

  2. Connect the monitor to the HDMI port on the motherboard’s rear I/O panel.
  3. Power on the display and choose the HDMI input connected to the PC.
  4. If there is no picture and a discrete card is installed, check the motherboard manual for a setting that enables integrated graphics or allows it to remain active alongside the card.

Some desktop computers disable integrated graphics when they detect a discrete graphics card, according to Intel’s integrated-graphics guidance. Whether both graphics devices can stay active, and the exact firmware setting name, depend on the system.

Can you use motherboard HDMI and graphics card HDMI at the same time?

Sometimes. The processor must have integrated graphics, and the motherboard firmware must support keeping the iGPU active alongside the discrete card. Enabling both is separate from choosing which device is the primary display adapter.

For example, MSI describes “Initiate Graphics Adapter” as a setting for selecting the primary adapter, with “IGD” referring to integrated graphics and “PEG” to PCI Express graphics. ASUS documents an “iGPU Multi-Monitor” option as an example of enabling integrated graphics alongside a discrete card. These labels and their availability vary; use the manual for your specific motherboard rather than assuming your BIOS has the same options.

If you attach a second monitor, also check that it is enabled or detected in the operating system or graphics settings. The firmware setting alone does not configure every display in the operating system.

Choosing between the two HDMI outputs

Check Motherboard HDMI Graphics card HDMI
Graphics source Processor’s integrated graphics Discrete graphics card
What must be true The CPU must have integrated graphics; the motherboard and firmware must support the setup. The card must be installed and powered as required.
Where to connect Motherboard rear I/O panel HDMI output on the separate graphics card
Can it work while a graphics card is installed? Possibly; some systems disable the iGPU by default, and concurrent use depends on firmware support. Use this output to have the discrete card drive the display.

There is no universal resolution, refresh-rate, or feature advantage established for either port. Those capabilities depend on the particular CPU, motherboard, graphics card, display, and connection; check their specifications for the models you own.

  1. Confirm the port. For integrated graphics, connect to motherboard HDMI; for the discrete card, use its HDMI output.
  2. Check the display. Make sure the monitor or TV is powered on and set to the HDMI input connected to the PC.
  3. Reseat the cable. Unplug and firmly reconnect both ends. If possible, test with another known-good HDMI cable and another display.
  4. For motherboard HDMI, verify CPU graphics. Check that the exact CPU has integrated graphics and is supported by the motherboard and BIOS.
  5. If a card is installed, check iGPU firmware settings. Consult the motherboard manual for options to enable integrated graphics or multi-monitor support. Names and availability vary by model.
  6. For graphics-card HDMI, check power. Confirm any required auxiliary GPU power connector is installed. Reseat the card only if you are comfortable working inside the PC and can do so safely.
  7. If using an adapter, test directly if possible. A converter is not a universal fix: compatibility depends on the source port, adapter or cable, and display. Check the device maker’s validated configurations before buying an adapter.
  8. If the connection is sound, check software. Intel’s display troubleshooting guidance includes checking graphics drivers, whether the display is enabled, and display firmware where relevant: Intel: troubleshooting an undetected external display.

What to check before buying an HDMI cable or adapter

A replacement cable is worth testing when a known-good cable works and the current one does not. It will not make motherboard HDMI work with a CPU that has no integrated graphics, enable an iGPU disabled by firmware, or correct a connection to the wrong port. Before buying an adapter, verify that the source connection, adapter or cable, and display support the conversion you need.
