How to Use HandBrake’s Queue to Encode a Folder for YouTube Live

HandBrake can queue multiple folder videos for encoding, but it cannot stream them live. Here’s the folder workflow and the separate YouTube Live setup.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

HandBrake can batch-encode videos from a folder, but its queue creates video files—it does not start or feed a YouTube Live broadcast. Open a folder of eligible videos as a multi-title source, give each output a unique name, queue the titles, and encode them. To broadcast live, separately configure an encoder to send a feed to YouTube.

What HandBrake’s queue does—and what it doesn’t

HandBrake’s queue is for processing encodes. You can open a folder containing multiple single-title videos as one virtual source, select titles, and queue them as separate jobs. The result is a set of encoded files, not a live stream or an upload to YouTube. The folder method excludes discs and disc-like sources, and it ignores files inside nested folders. See HandBrake’s Using the Queue guide.

If you want to broadcast those videos as a live event, you need a separate live encoder that sends a feed to YouTube. The live encoder’s bitrate and stream settings are distinct from HandBrake’s file-encoding settings.

Prepare the folder and prevent output collisions

  • Put the videos you want to encode directly in the folder you will open. HandBrake’s multi-title folder workflow does not include nested subfolders; queue those separately if needed.
  • Use the folder workflow for multiple single-title video files, not discs or disc-like sources.
  • Choose an output destination with enough free space for the encoded files.
  • Use automatic filenames that include each title. HandBrake recommends including the title when queuing multiple jobs, so files do not overwrite one another.

HandBrake documents these naming controls under Tools > Preferences > Output Files on Windows: enable automatic naming, set a default path, and include Title in File Format. On macOS, use Preferences > General to configure automatic naming and include Title in Format. Interface labels can vary between versions.

Open the folder, choose a preset, and queue the videos

  1. Open the folder as a source. In HandBrake, open the Open Source dialog and select the folder containing the target videos. HandBrake presents eligible files as multiple titles in one virtual source.
  2. Select a title and preset. Choose the video you want to encode and a preset. HandBrake’s Creator presets are intended for video-hosting sites such as YouTube and aim for high-quality output to reduce generational loss when a platform re-encodes a video. A general preset may also work, but check its output settings rather than assuming it is suitable for every source.
  3. Check the output settings. Presets can limit resolution or peak frame rate. Confirm the selected preset has not downscaled a high-resolution source or changed its frame rate in a way you do not want. HandBrake describes its presets and their behavior in its official presets documentation.
  4. Set the destination and filename. Choose the output folder and verify that automatic names include the title. If you are naming files manually, give every queued job a distinct filename.
  5. Add titles to the queue. Menu labels differ by operating system: on Windows, use Queue > All Selection to Queue; on macOS, use File > Add Titles to Queue…; on Linux, use Queue > Add Multiple. These labels are from HandBrake’s documented workflow and may differ in other versions.
  6. Review and start the jobs. Open the queue window, check that the intended titles and destinations are listed, and remove or edit any incorrect jobs. Start the queue to process the encodes.

Preview a sample before encoding the whole folder

Before committing to a large batch, use HandBrake’s Preview feature to encode a short portion and inspect the result. Choose a representative section with the kind of motion and detail found in the source, and check at least one completed output file before relying on the batch settings. A preview can help assess the chosen encode settings; it does not validate every title or any separate live encoder configuration. See HandBrake’s Preview documentation.

Set up YouTube Live separately

To broadcast, configure the encoder that sends your live feed, then use the stream details YouTube provides for that broadcast. YouTube’s live-encoder guidance recommends RTMPS and lists RTMP/RTMPS transport, H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and AAC or MP3 audio. YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds. Settings are applied in the live encoder—not in HandBrake. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate guidance.

Live bitrate recommendations

The figures below are YouTube’s live-ingest recommendations on a dynamically maintained page, checked on October 3, 2026. They apply to the live encoder and are not requirements for a HandBrake output file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Live output Codec YouTube recommended bitrate
1080p30 H.264 14 Mbps
1080p60 H.264 17 Mbps
1080p30 AV1 or H.265 10 Mbps
1080p60 AV1 or H.265 12 Mbps
720p30 or 720p60 H.264 8 Mbps
720p30 or 720p60 AV1 or H.265 6 Mbps
4K60 H.264 50 Mbps
4K60 AV1 or H.265 35 Mbps

Choose only a codec and quality your live encoder supports and your connection can sustain. YouTube’s network guidance recommends leaving 20% of upload bandwidth unused as headroom; test with representative audio and motion before going live, and monitor stream health during the broadcast. See YouTube’s encoder recommendations and network tips for live streaming.

Keep file-encoding and live-stream settings separate

A video file made for upload and a live feed have different delivery requirements. YouTube’s upload recommendations address uploaded files and include MP4, H.264, AAC-LC/Opus/Eclipsa Audio, and variable-bitrate guidance. Its live-encoder page specifies CBR for live ingest. Do not copy a live bitrate into HandBrake automatically, or assume a file’s bitrate is the bitrate your live connection needs. For file uploads, consult YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings; for a live feed, use the separate live-encoder guidance above.

Troubleshooting the folder queue

  • Some videos do not appear: Check that they are directly in the selected folder, not a nested subfolder. Open each nested folder separately if you need to encode its contents.
  • The source is a disc or disc-like format: The multi-title folder workflow is documented for multiple single-title video files and excludes discs and disc-like sources. Open those sources through the appropriate source workflow instead.
  • Queued jobs overwrite one another: Set automatic naming to include the title, or assign a distinct filename to every job. Recheck the destination and names in the queue before starting.
  • The output has lower resolution or a different frame rate than expected: Inspect the selected preset and its resolution and frame-rate limits. Choose settings suited to the source and intended use, then preview a sample.
  • The live encoder will not maintain a healthy stream: This is separate from HandBrake’s encode queue. Check the selected live bitrate, codec, keyframe interval, and connection capacity; leave upload headroom, test before the event, and check YouTube’s stream-health indicators.

Or let it run in the cloud

For a YouTube channel that should stay live with uploaded videos, StreamNeo is a separate option from HandBrake’s batch-file workflow: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Every slot handles the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers, and automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card; one free day is available per account. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube streams from uploaded videos, not camera-based broadcasts.
