Choose the bitrate from the upload speed that your connection can sustain at the stream location—not your advertised download speed—and leave YouTube’s recommended 20% upload headroom. Then test the complete setup, including the actual video and audio, before relying on it.
A 4G connection can work for a low-resolution stream, but one speed test cannot establish that it will stay stable for 24 hours. Mobile performance, plan limits and coverage vary by place and provider, so the steps below focus on measuring and testing your own setup.

Choose the resolution and bitrate for your content
Resolution and bitrate are related but separate choices: resolution sets the picture dimensions, while bitrate determines how much data the video stream uses each second. YouTube’s H.264 recommendations, accessed in 2026, list these ranges:

These are platform recommendations, not guarantees that any bitrate in a range will work on a particular 4G connection. Lowering resolution does not automatically set an appropriate bitrate. Start conservatively, then judge image quality with the real footage: motion and fine detail may need more data than a static scene.

Use common 16:9 dimensions such as 640×360 for 360p or 854×480 for 480p if those fit your source. These dimensions are practical examples, not a YouTube requirement established by its cited settings guidance.
Prepare the video and encoder
Export a clean source file
- Choose the intended output resolution and 30 fps frame rate. Export progressive video rather than interlaced footage.
- Use H.264 video and stereo AAC audio for a broadly compatible starting point. YouTube lists H.264, H.265 and AV1 video, and AAC or MP3 audio among its supported encoder options.
- Keep the finished file and play it from beginning to end in the encoder or player you plan to use. Confirm that the picture, audio and duration are correct before scheduling the live stream.
Set the streaming encoder
- Protocol: Use RTMPS when your encoder and YouTube stream setup support it. YouTube lists RTMP and RTMPS.
- Rate control: Set constant bitrate (CBR), which YouTube lists in its encoder settings.
- Keyframes: Set a two-second keyframe interval. YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds.
- Audio: YouTube recommends 128 Kbps for stereo audio. Include audio in your total upload budget, not just the video bitrate.
- Stream key: In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the stream and use its stream key in your encoder. Keep the key private; anyone who obtains it may be able to send a stream to your channel. Select matching encoder settings where YouTube offers them.
Exact encoder menu names differ by software, so check the labels in the encoder you use. YouTube’s settings guidance says to test before going live.
Calculate the upload capacity and data use
Leave upload headroom
YouTube says the total stream bitrate must not exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom. As a simple calculation, a 1 Mbps total stream target needs at least 1.25 Mbps of stable upload capacity (1 ÷ 0.8); a 2 Mbps target needs 2.5 Mbps. These are arithmetic examples, not measurements of Indian 4G performance. Count audio and other simultaneous uploads in the total.

Measure upload performance on the actual SIM, device or router, at the place where the stream will run. A download-speed result does not answer whether the uplink can carry the stream. Test at different times, including periods when the connection is busy or weak, and choose a target below the capacity that remains stable in those tests.
Estimate the 24-hour data requirement
At a steady bitrate, 1 Mbps transfers about 10.8 decimal GB in 24 hours, or about 324 GB over 30 days. At 2 Mbps, the arithmetic estimate is about 21.6 GB per day or 648 GB per 30 days. These are calculations from bitrate, not carrier-measured usage. Actual consumption can be higher because of protocol overhead, reconnects, bitrate variation and other device traffic. Check your provider’s current data allowance, fair-use terms and throttling conditions; those terms and coverage vary by plan and location in India.
Test the complete 4G setup before going public
- Check channel readiness. YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. First-time live activation takes at least 24 hours after the request, so enable it ahead of your planned stream.
- Test the real programme. YouTube advises testing with audio and motion similar to the actual stream. Run an unlisted test using the same video, encoder settings, SIM, router or phone, antenna placement and power source you intend to use.
- Test at different times. Repeat outbound speed checks and the unlisted stream test at different times. This is a practical way to assess changing mobile conditions, not a guarantee that 4G will remain available continuously.
- Check YouTube’s live preview and health indicators. Look for dropped frames, poor stream health or reconnects before depending on the setup.
- Plan a backup if interruptions matter. A single 4G connection is a single point of failure. YouTube’s tips recommend testing encoder failover for events that use it, but the cited guidance does not promise mobile-carrier failover. A separately tested backup link or encoder may help; whether a second network is worthwhile depends on local coverage and cost.
- Keep a local recording if you need a copy. YouTube’s tips say to confirm that a local archive file is growing when recording locally. Do not assume that a 24/7 event will be archived or retained for a particular duration: the cited guidance does not establish archive behavior for one continuous stream.
Check copyright and channel rules for the video
Before streaming, make sure you have the rights or permissions needed for every part of the recording, including music, images and other people’s footage. Low resolution does not change copyright obligations. YouTube’s channel eligibility conditions and applicable copyright rules still matter for a prerecorded stream; review the content and permissions before making it public.

Troubleshoot common 4G stream problems

YouTube’s guidance mentions a daily limit on how many live streams a channel can create in 24 hours. That is not a stated duration limit for one stream and does not establish how long a single event can run or how its archive will be handled.

Does YouTube’s 24-hour live-stream limit mean one stream must stop after a day?
No. The cited YouTube guidance describes a limit on the number of live streams created in 24 hours, not the duration of one continuous event.
