Disney+ GroupWatch is no longer available as a native feature. Disney removed it on September 18, 2023, so the old three-person GroupWatch icon and invitation workflow will not normally appear in the Disney+ app or website. To watch together now, use SharePlay if everyone has compatible Apple devices, Teleparty or Scener from computers, or a voice call with a coordinated countdown.
Is Disney+ GroupWatch still available?
No. Disney+ no longer presents GroupWatch as a current in-app feature. The removal date was reported as September 18, 2023; older guides telling you to open a title and select the GroupWatch icon are obsolete. The reason for the removal was not explained in a detailed public Disney announcement, although reporting connected the timing with broader account-sharing changes. See Cord Cutters News and Stuff.

What everyone needs
- An active Disney+ Standard or Premium subscription. Disney’s cited guidance excludes the ad-supported plan.
- An iPhone, iPad or Apple TV with current iOS, iPadOS or tvOS software.
- The latest available Disney+ app.
- Permission to watch the same title in each participant’s country or region.
Disney’s requirements and supported devices are listed at Disney+ SharePlay help. Mac support should not be assumed: that guidance specifically covers iPhone, iPad and Apple TV.
Start SharePlay on iPhone or iPad
- Start a FaceTime call with the people watching.
- While the call is active, open the Disney+ app.
- Select the movie or episode and tap Play.
- Accept the SharePlay prompt if it appears, or look for the SharePlay control in the playback or FaceTime controls. Labels can vary by software version.
- Have the other participants join the shared playback session.
- Use the Disney+ playback controls or FaceTime controls to pause, resume or leave.
Use SharePlay with Apple TV
Begin or join the FaceTime/SharePlay session using a supported Apple device, open the title on Apple TV and select SharePlay when offered. Apple TV supplies the picture while FaceTime provides the conversation.
SharePlay limitations
- Every participant needs an eligible Disney+ subscription; SharePlay does not provide access to Disney+ content.
- The ad-supported plan is excluded by the cited Disney help guidance.
- Regional catalog differences can prevent someone from joining a title.
- It is unsuitable for groups using only Windows, Android, Chromebook or non-Apple TV hardware.
Use Teleparty on a computer
Teleparty’s Disney+ workflow uses a browser extension to synchronize playback and provide text chat. Each viewer still signs in to their own Disney+ account.
Recommended Free Tools
Setup
- Install the Teleparty extension from the official site.
- Open Disney+ in a supported desktop browser and sign in.
- Open the movie or episode and start playback, or open its playback page.
- Select the TP button in the browser toolbar.
- Create the party and copy its generated link.
- Send the link to the other viewers.
- Each guest installs Teleparty, opens the link, signs in to their own Disney+ account and joins.
- Start or resume playback once everyone is ready.
Teleparty costs and trade-offs
The free version supports basic Disney+ synchronization and text chat. Teleparty’s support page listed Premium at $6.59 per month or $3.99 per month when billed annually ($47.88 per year) when viewed in August 2026; Premium is not necessary for ordinary free-tier Disney+ parties. Browser updates, Disney+ interface changes, DRM restrictions and regional availability can affect extensions. See Teleparty support.

Use Scener for a more social watch room
Scener’s FAQ lists Disney+ among its supported U.S. services. It provides rooms with text chat and optional audio or video features.
Setup
- On a Windows, Mac or Chromebook computer, install the Scener Chrome extension.
- Create or sign in to a Scener account.
- Open Scener and create a room, or join an invitation.
- Select Disney+ and sign in when prompted.
- Choose the title and confirm that every participant can access it.
- Start playback and use Scener’s chat or social controls.
Hosting requires a laptop or desktop with the Chrome extension. Mobile users may be able to chat or view parts of a party but may need a second device for synchronized video. Scener describes hosting and joining as free; participant audio and video chat require Premium. Its FAQ describes rooms supporting up to 10 people for video, audio and text chat, with larger theater audiences using text chat under Scener’s room structure. No reliable current dollar price is stated in that FAQ.
If everyone watches on a smart TV, Roku, Fire TV or console
Disney+ supports many televisions, streaming devices, consoles, browsers, phones and tablets, but streaming support is not the same as watch-party support. Teleparty and Scener are principally computer-browser tools, so do not assume that a TV app can host or join one directly. Disney’s device list is at Disney+ supported devices.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Start a voice or video call separately.
- Agree on a countdown.
- Everyone presses Play at the same time.
- Pause and count down again whenever someone falls behind.
This manual method requires no extension or special hardware, but viewers must correct drift themselves.

Do all viewers need their own Disney+ access?
For legitimate synchronized viewing, generally yes. SharePlay requires every participant to have an active eligible Disney+ subscription. Teleparty says each participant needs access to the streaming-service account being used, and Scener says subscription services such as Disney+ generally require each participant’s own account. A party tool synchronizes playback; it does not grant access, bypass household rules or defeat regional licensing.
Disney’s concurrent-stream allowance is separate from watch-party functionality. Current help information says household subscribers can stream on up to four devices, while extra members are limited to one device at a time. Check the current concurrent-stream guidance and extra-member rules rather than treating simultaneous streams as a GroupWatch replacement.
Can people in different countries watch together?
Only if the selected title is available and authorized for every participant in their country or region. Disney+ catalogs are territory-dependent; a synchronization tool cannot overcome licensing differences. If one person cannot open the title, choose another title available in all participants’ catalogs.
Troubleshooting
The GroupWatch icon is missing
That is expected: the native feature was removed. It is not normally an account, device or app-update fault.

SharePlay does not appear
- Confirm that everyone has Standard or Premium rather than the ad-supported plan.
- Update the Disney+ app and iOS, iPadOS or tvOS.
- Verify that the title is available to everyone.
- Start the session from a supported iPhone, iPad or Apple TV.
A participant cannot join
Check the participant’s Disney+ subscription, account and profile, regional title access, app and operating-system versions, and whether a third-party extension is enabled and signed in. A party link opened in an unsupported browser or device can also fail.
Playback drifts out of sync
- Pause for everyone.
- Confirm the same episode and timestamp.
- Have one person count down and resume.
- If drift continues, close and recreate the party.
- Disable conflicting browser extensions and retry in a clean browser window.
Screen sharing shows a black screen
Streaming services commonly restrict capture and screen sharing through DRM. Do not attempt to bypass those protections. Use SharePlay, Teleparty, Scener or independent playback instead.
Ads or catalogs differ
Ad-supported playback can introduce different ad timing, while regional rights can make a title unavailable to one viewer. Both situations can interrupt synchronization; choose a title and method that all participants can use.
Which replacement should you choose?
| Situation | Best choice | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Everyone uses iPhone, iPad or Apple TV | SharePlay | Official Disney+ integration and synchronized playback |
| Mixed Windows, Mac or Chromebook group | Teleparty | Simple browser extension, link sharing and text chat |
| Video or audio conversation matters | Scener, or SharePlay for Apple groups | More social features than basic Teleparty chat |
| Viewers are primarily on smart TVs or consoles | Manual countdown with voice chat | Third-party browser tools may not run on TV apps |
| Some viewers use Disney+ With Ads | Teleparty or manual synchronization | The cited Disney SharePlay guidance excludes the ad-supported plan |
| No one wants to install software | Manual countdown | Lowest setup cost, weakest synchronization |
The Bottom Line
“GroupWatch” is now a legacy Disney+ name. Match the replacement to your devices: SharePlay for supported Apple hardware, Teleparty for straightforward computer viewing, Scener for social rooms, and a synchronized countdown when everyone is watching through TV apps.
