Apple Considered Mistral and Perplexity—but Its Current Siri Strategy Is Built on Google Gemini

Mistral and Perplexity were reported as possible Apple targets in 2025. Apple’s confirmed 2026 strategy, however, uses Google Gemini and Google Cloud for next-generation Apple Foundation Models and Siri.

Short answer: Apple was reportedly weighing Mistral and Perplexity as possible strategic or acquisition targets in August 2025, but neither company was confirmed as an Apple replacement for Google. Apple and Google instead announced a multi-year Gemini collaboration on January 12, 2026, and Apple said on June 8 that its third-generation foundation models were being built with Google technology. There is no verified evidence as of August 18, 2026, that this Gemini arrangement has collapsed.

The headline combines two different Google relationships

“The Google deal” can refer to either Apple’s newer artificial-intelligence collaboration with Google or the much older agreement that makes Google the default search provider in Apple’s ecosystem. They carry different risks and would require different fallback plans.

Arrangement What it covers What a breakdown would mean
Gemini and Apple Foundation Models Google Gemini models and Google cloud technology supporting Apple’s next-generation foundation models and future Siri features. Apple would need another model partner, more internal development, or a multi-provider architecture.
Google Search default placement Google’s position as the default web-search provider across Apple products, along with related commercial payments. Apple could face a new default, a choice screen, easier switching, or several search providers. It would not automatically lose the Gemini collaboration.

The distinction matters: replacing Google Search is not the same project as replacing the model technology used for Siri and Apple Intelligence.

Where the Mistral and Perplexity story came from

An August 26, 2025 AppleInsider report described internal disagreement at Apple over whether acquisitions could address the company’s perceived artificial-intelligence gap. Mistral and Perplexity were discussed as possible targets.

That report did not establish a signed acquisition, a supplier contract, or a decision to use either company as a Gemini replacement. Mistral represented a model-development and talent thesis; Perplexity represented a web-search, answer-engine, browser, and distribution thesis. They were not interchangeable “backup providers.”

What Apple has publicly confirmed since then

January 2026: a multi-year Google collaboration

In its January 12, 2026 joint announcement, Apple and Google said Gemini models and Google cloud technology would help power Apple’s next-generation foundation models and future Siri capabilities. The companies said Apple evaluated the technology and considered Google’s artificial intelligence the most capable foundation for its plans.

June 2026: Google is part of the production architecture

Apple’s June 8 Apple Intelligence overview and its third-generation foundation-models paper describe models running across Apple devices and server infrastructure. Apple also said those models were built in collaboration with Google.

Apple’s Private Cloud Compute update explains that more complex requests can run through Apple’s privacy-preserving cloud system, with expanded use of Google Cloud and NVIDIA technology. The architecture is therefore not simply “send everything to a Google chatbot”: it combines on-device models, Apple’s controls, and cloud inference.

What this means for Siri

Apple’s Siri announcement describes assistance based on personal context, actions across apps, and current web information. Availability can vary by hardware, operating-system release, language, and region; Apple maintains rollout information on its Apple Intelligence page.

Why Perplexity could interest Apple

Perplexity’s own product overview presents a web-first answer engine with cited responses, research workflows, multiple-model routing, browser products, and developer APIs. Those capabilities could help Apple improve current-information answers in Siri, Spotlight, Safari, or another system search experience.

  • Privacy & Security – Designed to keep your personal information safe and secure.
  • Fresh web information: retrieval can answer questions that a static model cannot.
  • Visible sourcing: citations could make answers easier to check.
  • Search distribution: browser and API products could strengthen Apple’s negotiating position.
  • Routing: different models could be selected for different tasks.

Perplexity would still present difficult integration questions. Web retrieval brings licensing, quality-control, latency, and privacy issues. Apple would need rules for handling personal context alongside external search, and it would have to fit the service into its security and operating-system controls. Court evidence summarized in the U.S. Department of Justice’s proposed findings said Perplexity had not reached an agreement even to become an optional secondary Safari default at the time described. That is evidence of a market-access obstacle, not evidence of an Apple acquisition.

Why Mistral would solve a different problem

Mistral’s appeal would be its model-building expertise and the possibility of giving Apple more control over customization and its external technology relationships. The 2025 AppleInsider report described Mistral as a potential target, but any valuation or fundraising figure in that historical article should not be treated as current in 2026.

An Mistral relationship could diversify Apple’s model supply and support selected workloads. It would not, by itself, provide a complete web-search business. Apple would still need retrieval infrastructure, source licensing, safety systems, cloud capacity, and deep integration with Siri and its platforms.

  • Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.

Why Apple might partner instead of buying

  • Apple can access frontier capabilities without absorbing an entire company.
  • It keeps control of product design, operating-system integration, and privacy policy.
  • A partnership is easier to expand, renegotiate, or replace than a major acquisition.
  • Buying a search company and integrating it with Siri, Safari, iCloud, and personal context would be technically and organizationally complex.
  • Mistral’s model expertise and Perplexity’s search product address different layers of the stack.

Privacy is a platform requirement, not a feature checkbox

Any outside provider would have to work with Apple’s on-device processing, Private Cloud Compute, data minimization, secure handling of personal context, regional requirements, and auditability standards. Apple says its expanded Private Cloud Compute design extends these protections to selected third-party data centers through verifiable security controls.

That makes model quality only one part of the decision. A provider that performs well in a public chatbot may still be unsuitable for private, systemwide actions involving messages, mail, photos, contacts, or location.

How antitrust pressure changes Apple’s options

The Google Search arrangement has faced antitrust scrutiny independently of the Gemini collaboration. The DOJ findings discuss Apple considering artificial-intelligence chatbots as search choices and possible remedies such as choice screens or easier default switching. The UK Competition and Markets Authority’s decision likewise examines alternatives to general web search in Apple’s ecosystem, including services such as Perplexity.

Those proceedings create strategic pressure and could open distribution opportunities. They do not order Apple to adopt Mistral or Perplexity, and regulatory proposals are not the same as final obligations.

What a genuine fallback strategy could look like

Continue the Google collaboration

This is the publicly documented path: Google supplies model and cloud technology while Apple controls the device experience, foundation-model packaging, privacy architecture, and operating-system integration.

Add a specialized search provider

Apple could use Perplexity or another service for web retrieval while retaining Google or Apple models for reasoning and system actions. That would separate search freshness from the core foundation model.

Use multiple model providers

A routing layer could select models by task, region, latency, privacy requirement, or device capability. This would reduce dependence on one supplier but increase testing, cost, governance, and consistency burdens.

Accelerate Apple’s own models

Apple could expand internally developed models and use outside technology only for selected workloads. Its current foundation-model program already includes on-device and server-based components, so an external change would not mean starting from zero.

What users would notice if the strategy changed

  • Siri answers: different providers could change factuality, tone, latency, and handling of follow-up questions.
  • Web results: users might see more citations, a different ranking system, or a new answer interface.
  • Defaults: regulatory remedies could introduce a choice screen or simpler settings for changing search providers.
  • Privacy prompts: Apple could explain different data paths for on-device, Private Cloud Compute, and external retrieval.
  • Availability: features could vary by country, language, device, and software version.

What is established—and what is not

Claim Status
Apple and Google have a multi-year Gemini collaboration. Confirmed in January 2026.
Apple’s third-generation foundation models were built with Google collaboration and cloud infrastructure. Confirmed by Apple in June 2026.
Apple was reported to have considered Mistral and Perplexity. Historical secondary reporting from August 2025.
Apple bought either company or selected one as a Gemini replacement. Not confirmed by the cited material.
The Gemini collaboration has collapsed. No verified evidence as of August 18, 2026.
Antitrust authorities have mandated Mistral or Perplexity as Apple’s provider. Not established.

The Bottom Line

Apple’s Mistral and Perplexity discussions are best understood as historical evidence that the company wanted options, not as proof of an imminent replacement for Google. The current public plan is a Google-backed Apple Foundation Models architecture operating across Apple devices and Private Cloud Compute. A search-default dispute could still push Apple toward more providers, but it would be a separate decision from replacing Gemini in Siri.
