What Google Messages for web does
Messages for web displays the conversations available in the Google Messages mobile app on a computer or Android tablet. It is a browser-based way to use those conversations with a larger screen and keyboard, not a separate inbox. For SMS, the computer sends messages through a connection to the phone; Google says carrier fees apply as they do when texting in the mobile app. Google Messages Help

What you need before pairing
- The latest Google Messages app on a phone running Android 5.0 or higher.
- Wi-Fi or mobile data on the phone. Google recommends Wi-Fi to avoid data charges.
- An internet connection on the computer or Android tablet.
- A supported browser: Chrome, Firefox, Safari, or Microsoft Edge. Internet Explorer is not supported.
- The same Google Account in the mobile app and browser.
How to pair your phone with a computer
- On the phone, open Google Messages and choose Device Pairing from the account menu.
- On the computer, open Google Messages for web in a supported browser and sign in with the same Google Account used in the phone app.
- Check that the emoji shown on the phone matches the one shown on the computer, then confirm the pairing on the phone.
Google’s current help guidance says QR-code pairing is no longer available in the United States; the documented account-pairing flow uses the matching emoji. Pairing options can change, so consult Google’s current instructions if the screens differ.
Keep the phone connected and account for SMS costs
The browser mirrors the mobile app rather than operating as an independent messaging inbox. Google describes SMS sent from the computer as going through a connection to the phone, so the phone needs internet access for the web experience and carrier fees may apply to SMS. The computer also needs internet access.

Protect messages on shared computers
Google says recent conversation threads, contacts, and settings are encrypted and cached in the browser. Because cached conversations can include sensitive information such as two-factor verification codes, unpair the account after using a shared or public computer. Google also says accounts unused for a few weeks are automatically unpaired. Google Messages Help: security and pairing
Manage paired devices
Your Google Account is used to pair the mobile app and device. Google allows multiple devices to be paired, but only one computer can be active at a time. If you no longer use a computer—or it is not private—unpair it from the phone’s Device Pairing controls.
