Are Middle Schoolers Using NPR Podcast Comments as a Hangout? What the Report Actually Says

A reported group of children used Spotify podcast comment threads to chat, including threads beneath NPR’s Wild Card episodes. The account comes from a September 25, 2026 TechCrunch report about a This American Life story. It describes one group—not evidence that middle schoolers broadly have adopted NPR comments as their newest social network.

What was reported

Producers of NPR’s Wild Card reportedly noticed a burst of cryptic comments on Spotify episodes. Producer Dave Blanchard initially suspected bots and reported the posts. Audio producer Hannah Chin recognized details that looked more like children chatting online: display names, profile pictures, short exchanges and the familiar rhythm of an online conversation.

How the group used Spotify

Playlists pointed people to episodes

The transcript describes children creating public playlists with chat-oriented names. Those playlists helped direct other participants to a particular podcast episode and its comment thread. That is a reported route from playlist to thread, not evidence that every Spotify playlist or podcast comments area is being used this way.

The conversation moved between shows

One participant, a 14-year-old identified as Ella, said the group first used comments on a video podcast available on Spotify after another show was banned. The children then moved among podcast episode threads.

The group was described as small

Ella estimated that the core group included “maybe 20 kids,” mostly girls and theater kids. That is her estimate, not an independently verified count or a statistic about middle schoolers.

Why choose podcasts with few comments?

Asked why the group selected NPR shows, Ella said: “Um, I think we just, like, looked for podcasts that didn’t have many comments.” She explained that a lightly used thread made it easier to keep the group’s conversation separate from other commenters.

That explanation belongs to one interviewee. It should not be generalized to all children, Spotify users or NPR listeners, and it is not a measurement of which podcasts have the fewest comments.

What this story does—and does not—show

Supported by the account Not established by the account
Children in one reported group used Spotify podcast comments to exchange messages. That middle schoolers generally use NPR comment threads as a hangout.
A producer first mistook the unusual posts for bot activity. That the comments were generated by bots, or that bot activity is common in these threads.
Public playlists helped participants find specific episode threads. That Spotify playlists or podcast comments are designed as private messaging tools.
One participant said the group preferred episodes with few existing comments. Any population-level count, survey result or prevalence estimate.

Why the behavior is easy to miss

Podcast comment sections are usually read as places for reactions to an episode. A short exchange between children can therefore look like spam, coded posting or automated activity, especially when it appears under an unrelated show. Public profile names and images can reveal that the posts are connected, but they do not by themselves establish who is behind an account or how large a group is involved.

The reported use also illustrates how young people can repurpose an existing feature. A thread built for audience discussion can become a rendezvous point when participants know which episode to open. The platform’s original purpose does not change, but the social meaning of the comments does.

What parents and educators should take from it

The most useful lesson is not that NPR’s comments are a confirmed trend or that Spotify is inherently safe or unsafe. It is that children may communicate through features adults do not think of as chat tools.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Ask which apps and features a child actually uses, including podcast comments, public playlists and profile pages.
  • Look at the visibility of posts and profiles together: a comment may be public even when the conversation feels like a small group chat.
  • Discuss what information can be exposed through display names, profile images, playlists and repeated public messages.
  • Use the platform’s current reporting, blocking and privacy controls where appropriate, while recognizing that settings and moderation features can change.
  • Focus on the child’s specific experience rather than assuming that every commenter, playlist or podcast thread is part of the same group.

The available account describes a child speaking with parental permission, with a parent present in the car during the interview. That detail does not establish a general safety policy for Spotify or any other platform.

Is this the “hottest new hangout”?

That phrase is headline framing, not a finding supported by a prevalence study. The cited reporting gives a vivid example of one group finding one another through public podcast infrastructure. It does not show how many children do this, how long the practice lasted, whether it continues, or whether similar groups use other platforms more often.

So the careful answer is narrower: some children reportedly used Spotify podcast comments—including comments under NPR’s Wild Card episodes—as a chat space. Calling it the dominant or newest hangout for middle schoolers goes beyond the evidence.
