Use Google Maps to build a shortlist, inspect what a place and its surroundings look like, compare practical routes, and save an offline map if you may lose connectivity. Treat its recommendations and imagery as useful clues—not a definitive ranking or guarantee that what you see is current.
1. Explore the destination and nearby options
Search for the destination or open it on the map, then use Explore to look for restaurants, sights, activities, and other nearby places. Recommendations may adapt to your location and the time of day. Trending spots and partner-driven lists appear only in select cities or areas, so what you see can vary. See Google Maps Help: Explore.

As you compare candidates, focus on what matters for your visit: distance from the area you plan to be in, whether the place suits the activity you have in mind, and how you would get there. Maps can help you find options, but its recommendations alone do not establish which place is best for you.

Street View can help you look at a destination up close and check its approaches. Open imagery for the specific place, if available, and examine the surrounding streets or entrance rather than assuming the map pin tells the whole story. Google’s feature overview describes Street View as a way to explore places up close, but does not establish coverage or capture dates for every location. Imagery may not be available for your destination or reflect current conditions. See Google Maps Help: helpful features.

3. Save candidates in a shortlist
Save promising places to a named list such as “Visit” or “Maybe” so you can return to them while planning. Google provides instructions for creating and managing lists on both desktop and Android.
Think about visibility and access before sharing a list. Desktop guidance covers sharing, visibility controls, and data export. Android guidance explains how to invite collaborators and warns that viewers may see list members’ names and profile pictures, as well as who added or edited places and notes. Google’s desktop saved-place guidance also says saved lists are limited to 3,000 entries; sign in if you want to find saved places across devices. See Google Maps Help: Find your places and lists.

4. Compare routes for your actual trip
Check routes for the way you expect to travel, then consider whether the options suit your priorities. Google Maps offers route preferences that include avoiding tolls, ferries, and motorways. These choices can change the route; they do not establish that a particular route or time estimate is best for your destination. Google’s overview of helpful Maps features describes route preferences.
On mobile, saved frequent trips support driving, transit, and two-wheeler routes. That can help if you regularly travel the same route, but it is distinct from choosing and checking a route for a one-off visit. See Google Maps Help: saved trips.
5. Download a map if connectivity may be unreliable
If offline access could matter, download the intended area before you travel and make sure the full route falls within it. Google says offline map downloads are unavailable in some countries or regions. Offline navigation also has important limits: Google Maps Help’s Android guidance says, “When you’re offline, transit, bicycling, or walking directions are unavailable.” For driving, offline use does not provide traffic information or alternate routes. Check Google Maps Help: Download areas & navigate offline in Google Maps for the current guidance.

Google’s Android help says recently saved and nearby saved places depend on Maps activity. The “Nearby saved” feature may not appear unless saved places are within 25 km (about 16 mi). This is a specific behavior of that interface, not a general limit on finding saved places. See Google Maps Help: Find saved places.
