How to Use Google Maps to Avoid Overnight Road Closures

Use Google Maps to compare routes and see reported incidents, but verify scheduled overnight closures with the road authority and obey road signs.

Google Maps has no dedicated setting to avoid overnight road closures. You can plan for your intended departure time, compare the routes Maps offers and watch for reported incidents, but those features cannot guarantee that a scheduled night closure will be detected. Check the responsible road authority’s notice for your exact road and travel window, then obey signs and traffic regulations at the scene.

Plan for the time you expect to travel

  1. Open Google Maps and enter your destination. For an eligible trip to one destination, use the option to set a future departure or arrival time, where available. Google says the estimate uses traffic and transit schedules for the selected time; it does not promise to identify every planned road closure. See Google Maps’ guidance on helpful features.

  2. Review the route options Maps displays. Select a gray alternative route to see its estimated travel time. Preferences such as avoiding tolls or highways can change the route, but they are not controls for avoiding overnight closures. Google explains route options in its computer directions guide and Android directions guide.

  3. Check whether each plausible route passes through the road or segment named in an official closure notice. Compare the notice’s road, direction, date and hours with the route; do not assume Maps has checked that notice for you.

Check current incident reports while navigating

Google Maps can show reports such as roadworks and lane closures during navigation, and reports from other users may appear as you approach an incident. Availability of reporting features varies by country or region, so treat an alert as useful information rather than a complete closure list. See Google’s navigation guidance.

Verify planned night work with the road authority

For a scheduled closure, check the road operator, transport department, local authority or other official body responsible for that road. Search using the exact road name or number, direction, date and time. Recheck shortly before setting off: schedules can change, and information supplied through Google’s partner feeds is not necessarily reflected instantly.

Google’s partner-feed documentation says a new feed incident may take approximately 15–25 minutes to appear on Maps, while an update to an existing feed closure may take 1–2 hours. Those are processing estimates for partner-feed information, not a guarantee that a particular authority supplies data or that every closure is covered. Details are in Google Maps Content Partners’ data-sharing specifications.

Choose a route using the evidence you have

What to compare How to use it
Estimated travel time Use the estimate for your intended departure or arrival time where Maps offers it.
Closure location and hours Check the authority’s current notice against the route’s road, direction and travel window.
Route alternatives Compare the estimated time and whether an alternative avoids the affected segment; Maps may offer routes that still cross it.
Detour distance and road type Consider whether the alternative is practical for your vehicle and journey, rather than choosing solely by the shortest estimated time.

At the road, follow the signs

A route line in Maps is not permission to enter a closed road. Google’s guidance is explicit: “When in doubt, follow actual traffic regulations and confirm signage from the road or path that you’re on.” If signs or barriers conflict with the app, follow the closure and use a safe, legal alternative.

Keep navigation powered on a long drive

Navigation can use battery faster than usual. Google recommends a power adaptor, especially for trips longer than 30 minutes; this is battery guidance, not a way to improve closure coverage. See Google’s navigation guidance.
