Google Maps lists work on desktop, Android, and iPhone/iPad, but the labels and available controls differ by platform.
Google Maps Help describes the feature simply: “In Google Maps, you can create a list of places, like your favorite places or places you want to visit.” A list is a collection of saved place records, not a downloaded map area or a fully custom cartographic project.

What Google Maps lists are—and what they are not
A Google Maps list groups saved businesses, landmarks, addresses, and other place records under a name you choose. You might create Weekend ideas, Trip: Kyoto, or Restaurants to try, then save matching places as you discover them. The lists remain tied to your Google account, so you can retrieve them on another device signed in to the same account.
Saved places are private by default. Other people can find a list only after you share it, and sharing a list is separate from deciding whether its pins appear on your own map. Hiding a list changes your map display; it does not revoke another person’s access to a list you already shared.

There is a practical size ceiling: Google says Saved Lists are limited to 3,000 entries. Google’s help material does not state a publication year for that limit, and lists larger than 3,000 places may not display correctly. If you are approaching the limit, split a large collection by trip, city, year, or activity rather than treating one list as a permanent archive.
A list also is not an offline map. Offline Maps downloads a geographic area to a mobile device for navigation without a connection, while a list merely stores place entries. Google notes that offline downloads are unavailable in some countries and regions. For a true custom map with layers and map editing, Google identifies My Maps as the appropriate product.
Plan a list system that stays usable
Lists are easiest to maintain when each one answers a clear question. Before creating dozens of categories, decide what you will do with a place after saving it.

- Trip-based planning: one list per itinerary, such as Trip: Kyoto.
- Ongoing queues: recurring interests, such as Restaurants to try or Museums.
- Shared projects: a list whose name states the group purpose, such as Family beach week.
Keep names short enough to recognize in the Saved or You view. Put changing detail—reservation status, preferred day, dietary information, parking instructions, or who suggested a place—in the place note instead of creating a new list for every attribute. A modest number of clearly named lists is easier to search and less likely to become a second inbox.
Create a new list
Desktop browser
- Open Google Maps and select Saved in the left-side panel.
- Choose New list.
- Enter a list name. Add a description if the purpose needs clarification.
- Choose an icon when the option is offered.
- Save the list. Google’s desktop instructions say list changes save automatically.
You can also create a list while saving a place. When the save dialog offers your existing lists, choose the option to create a new one, name it, and continue saving the place.
Android
- Open the Google Maps app and tap You.
- Tap New list.
- Give the list a name and, where shown, add a description and icon.
- Confirm the list.
The exact placement of controls can change as the app is updated, but the You tab is the starting point for managing your lists on Android.
iPhone or iPad
- Open Google Maps and tap You.
- Choose New list.
- Enter the name, then add an optional description or icon if those controls appear.
- Finish creating the list.
If you are already viewing a place, use its save control and create the list from that flow instead of leaving the place page.

Add places to the right list
One place at a time on any platform
- Search for a place, address, or category in Google Maps, or select a pin directly on the map.
- Open the place’s details.
- Choose Save.
- Select the destination list. If none fits, create a list in the same dialog.
Saving the same place to more than one list is useful when the lists have different purposes—for example, a restaurant can belong to both Trip: Kyoto and Restaurants to try. The place record is reused; you do not need to create duplicate entries manually.
Move several saved places on Android
Android’s documented workflow lets you select multiple saved places and move them into a list. Open You, locate the saved places or list-management controls, select the places you want to reorganize, and choose the command to move them to a list. Pick an existing destination or create one when offered. This is faster than opening every place individually when you are cleaning up an older collection.
Because Google can change selection controls between app versions, look for a multi-select or edit command in the list-management view rather than assuming the same button appears on every Android phone.
Add context with notes and ordering
Place notes
A saved pin often loses its meaning weeks later. Add a short note immediately after saving it: “book the patio,” “near the north station,” “try the vegetarian menu,” or “suggested by Maya.” Google’s mobile list instructions support notes, and the iOS help page says a note can contain up to 4,000 characters. Use the first sentence for the decision-critical fact so it remains useful when you skim the list.

Consistent notes let collaborators understand the list without sending separate messages.
Custom order
When order matters, arrange entries in the sequence you expect to visit them rather than relying on alphabetical order. Android instructions document custom list ordering. Use that ordering for a day-by-day route, a shortlist ranked by priority, or a queue that the group will work through. If your platform does not expose the same reorder control, keep the sequence in notes or use separate day lists instead of assuming that a hidden sort will be preserved.
Edit the list itself
From the list-management view, look for controls to rename a list, change its description or icon, remove a place, or reorder entries. Edit the list when its purpose changes; do not keep an obsolete name that forces every collaborator to reinterpret it.

Find saved places again and control map display
Desktop
Select Saved to see your lists. Open a list to browse its places, select an entry to open its place details, or use the list’s display control to hide or show its pins on the main map. Hiding a list is useful when several projects overlap and the map becomes visually crowded. It does not delete places.
Android and iPhone/iPad
Open You to reach your lists. On Android, the You tab also provides search and filters for your places, which can help when you have many saved entries. On iPhone or iPad, use the list view and its search or scrolling controls to open a place. Platform labels and icon placement can vary, so focus on the list name and the place card rather than a particular icon shape.
Showing a list on the map is a viewing preference for your account. It is independent of whether a list is private, shared for viewing, or shared for editing.
Share a list without losing control
Choose viewing or editing access
Open the list’s sharing controls and choose the available option to copy a view link or invite collaborators to edit. A view link is appropriate when people only need the itinerary. Editing access is appropriate when a group must add places, remove unsuitable options, reorder entries, or maintain notes together.
Controls can differ by platform and account, so read the access description shown before sending the link. If the list contains personal routines, home-related places, or sensitive plans, share only with the people who need it.

Understand contributor visibility
Google says people who can view a shared list can see the names and profile pictures of people who joined, along with who added or edited places and notes. Treat a shared list as an activity record, not an anonymous suggestion box. Tell collaborators that their contributions may be identifiable.
Remove editing access
Return to the list’s sharing options when the project ends or someone should no longer change it. Remove that person’s editing access there. If the list should no longer be broadly available, change its sharing setting or stop distributing the view link, depending on the controls shown in your account.

Lists, offline maps, and My Maps: pick the right tool
| Need | Use | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Collect places for later | Google Maps list | Fastest way to save, annotate, display, and share place entries. |
| Plan together | Shared Google Maps list | Viewers can see the list; invited editors can add or modify places and notes. |
| Navigate without a connection | Offline Maps download | Downloads a map area to a mobile device. Availability is limited in some countries and regions. |
| Build a custom map with layers | My Maps | Google’s product for creating and editing custom maps online. |
Use a list when the unit you care about is a place. Use an offline download when the unit you care about is geographic coverage. Use My Maps when you need a custom map structure rather than a straightforward saved-place collection.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Export your saved lists with Google Takeout
If you want a copy outside Maps, Google’s list instructions point to Google Takeout. The export flow is account-based, so make sure you are signed in to the account that owns the saved places.
- Open Google Takeout.
- In the product selection, include Saved.
- Choose the destination for the export.
- Select the export frequency: a one-time archive or the recurring option offered by Takeout.
- Choose the available file format and create the export.
Takeout is a backup or migration path; it does not turn the result into an automatically synchronized Google Maps list. Keep the exported file in a location you can access, and check the format before planning to import it into another mapping tool.
Practical organization examples
A weekend discovery list
Create Weekend ideas and save parks, cafés, galleries, and events as you encounter them. Add a note with the best time to visit or a reservation requirement. Keep the list hidden when you are not planning, then show it on the map when choosing a route. Remove places after visiting them or move long-term favorites to a more permanent list.
A multi-day trip
Create one list named for the trip, such as Trip: Kyoto. Save lodging, meals, attractions, and transit-related places together. Use notes for day numbers and booking status, then order the entries to match the itinerary where your platform supports custom ordering. Share viewing access with travelers who only need the plan; grant editing access to the person responsible for maintaining it.
A household or group project
Create a shared list with a neutral, descriptive name such as Family beach week. Agree that every contributor will add a brief note explaining why a place is included. Review the activity record before making final choices, since viewers can see contributor identities and changes. When planning ends, remove editing access so the finished list cannot be changed accidentally.
Limits, privacy, and common mistakes
- Assuming saved means public: ordinary saved places are private until you create and share a list.
- Confusing hidden with private: hiding pins affects your map view; it does not change list-sharing permissions.
- Using lists as offline navigation: lists do not download map tiles or guarantee navigation without a connection.
- Overloading one list: Google’s stated 3,000-entry limit can make very large lists display improperly. Split them before reaching that scale.
- Leaving context only in memory: add a note while the reason for saving the place is still clear.
- Sharing more access than necessary: use view-only sharing when recipients do not need to edit, and remember that contributor identities are visible to list viewers.
- Expecting identical controls everywhere: desktop uses Saved, while mobile uses You; Android and iOS can expose different search, reorder, and bulk-edit controls.
Troubleshoot a list that does not behave as expected
A saved place is missing
Confirm that you are signed in to the same Google account used when saving it. Open Saved on desktop or You on mobile, then check each plausible list. If you recently moved places on Android, reopen the destination list rather than relying on the old list view.
Best Value
Pins are cluttering the map
Open the list controls and hide the list from the main map. This leaves the saved entries intact. Show only the list relevant to the current outing.
A collaborator cannot make changes
Reopen sharing settings and verify that the person received editing access rather than a view-only link. If the account was removed, invite it again using the current sharing controls. Remember that Google’s interface can vary by platform.
The list is too large to display reliably
Move entries into smaller lists organized by location, trip, year, or status. Keep a descriptive naming pattern so the split lists remain searchable, and export Saved through Google Takeout if you need an external archive before reorganizing.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
You need a map with layers or custom geometry
Switch to My Maps for a custom online map. A regular list is designed around saved place records and does not replace a layered custom-map workflow.
A maintenance routine that takes minutes
- Once a month, open each active list from Saved or You.
- Remove places you no longer plan to visit.
- Rewrite vague notes so the important context appears first.
- Split any list approaching the 3,000-entry limit.
- Hide inactive lists from the main map.
- Review sharing permissions and remove editing access when a project is complete.
- Create a Google Takeout export when the list represents valuable travel or business planning.
This routine keeps lists small enough to scan, preserves the reason behind each pin, and separates personal map display from collaboration permissions.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can other people see my saved places automatically?
No. Saved places are private unless you put them in a list and share that list.
Does hiding a list stop someone from accessing a shared list?
No. Hiding changes whether the list’s pins appear on your own map. Sharing settings determine who can view or edit the list.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat is the maximum size of a Google Maps saved list?
Google says Saved Lists are limited to 3,000 entries, and larger lists may not display properly.
Should I use a list or My Maps?
Use a list for a straightforward collection of saved places. Use My Maps when you need to create and edit a custom map with a different structure.
