How to Use Google Advanced Search: Filters and Operators

A practical guide to Google Advanced Search, including the form, useful search operators, and what to do when a filter is unavailable.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To use Google Advanced Search, open Google’s Advanced Search page or, on desktop, run a search and choose Tools > Advanced Search. Enter words or phrases to include or exclude, then narrow results with available options such as site, file type, date, language, region, or usage rights. For quick refinements, type operators like site:, quotation marks, or filetype: directly into the search box.

Open Google Advanced Search

On a computer, go to google.com/advanced_search, or run a Google search, open Tools, and select Advanced Search. Google notes that Advanced Search is not available for every type of result, and the fields shown can vary by Advanced Search page. See Google’s Advanced Search instructions for computers.

Use the Advanced Search form

  1. Start with a search. Open the Advanced Search page or enter a query in Google first.
  2. Set what the results should contain. In Find pages with, enter all required words, an exact phrase, terms to exclude, and—if useful—a site or domain.
  3. Choose filters. Under Then narrow your results by, select relevant options, such as file type, last update, language, region, or usage rights. Available fields may differ.
  4. Submit and inspect the results. If the results are too broad or too narrow, change one constraint at a time so you can tell which filter made the difference.

Use search operators for quick refinements

Operators let you add common constraints directly to a query, without opening a form. Google’s search refinement guide documents these patterns:

What you want Form field or operator Example
Require particular words All these words climate adaptation cities
Find an exact phrase This exact word or phrase; quotation marks "urban heat island"
Exclude a word None of these words; minus sign jaguar speed -car
Search a particular website or domain Site or domain; site: site:example.com annual report
Restrict results by last-updated date Last update; after: and before: report after:2025/01/01 before:2026/01/01
Find a document format File type; filetype: budget filetype:pdf

Keep an operator directly next to its value: write site:example.com, not site: example.com. Google describes before: and after: as filters for documents last updated before or after a date; combine them to define a range.

Examples you can adapt

  • Exact phrase on one site: "annual report" site:example.com
  • Exclude an unwanted meaning: jaguar speed -car
  • Search within a date range: astronomy discovery after:2026/03/10 before:2026/04/01
  • Find PDFs about a subject: photoelectric effect filetype:pdf

Choose the form or operators

Use the form when you need several constraints at once or want to select filters such as language, region, or usage rights. Use operators when you need a quick, repeatable refinement that is easy to type and revise. The form and operators serve different needs: not every filter has a corresponding operator in the documented examples, while the form makes its available fields visible.

When an option or filter is missing

Do not assume every search will show the same controls. Google says Search tools vary by query and content type; some are available only in certain languages or when you are signed in. Advanced Search itself is not offered for all result types. Check the result type and the available Tools options, or try the direct Advanced Search page if the form is appropriate for your search. See Google’s guidance on narrowing search results on a computer.
