You can inspect a readable JWT without uploading it: decode it on your device using local software or a decoder whose local-only operation you can verify. But decoding only reveals encoded data. It does not validate the token’s signature, prove its claims, or make the token safe to trust.
What decoding a JWT does—and does not do
A JSON Web Token (JWT) is a compact way to represent claims. A common signed JWT uses JWS compact serialization: a header, a payload, and a signature, with the three components separated by periods. The format is not always three-part: encrypted JWE compact serialization has five components, and a JWT can also be nested. The format and its variations are defined in RFC 7519.

In a readable signed token, the header and payload are represented using Base64url encoding. Decoding those components reverses that representation so you can read the JSON; it does not break encryption. Nor does it verify the signature. A readable claim such as an issuer, a user identifier, or an expiration time is just data until a verifier checks the token and applies the rules of the application that issued it.
Encryption is a separate case. Base64url decoding an encrypted JWE does not reveal its plaintext. Recovering that content requires the relevant decryption operation and key.

How to inspect a token without uploading it
- Choose a local method. Use software that runs on your device, or a browser-based decoder only if you can establish that decoding happens locally and the token is not sent elsewhere. A page being open in your browser does not, by itself, establish that it processes data only on your device.
- Keep the token out of remote inputs. Do not paste a sensitive token into a website, chat, support ticket, or other service unless you are authorized to disclose it and understand how that service handles it. Tokens can contain sensitive claims and may grant access while valid.
- Decode the components, not the signature. For a three-part JWS, inspect the header and payload as decoded JSON. Treat the signature as encoded cryptographic data, not as proof that the header or claims are genuine.
- Use the result only for inspection. If you need to decide whether to accept the token, use a verifier configured for the application and issuer rather than relying on a decoded display.
The RFCs define token formats and security requirements; they do not certify a particular decoder’s privacy behavior. If local processing cannot be demonstrated, use local software instead of submitting a sensitive token to that tool.
Decoding is not verification
A verifier must validate the relevant cryptographic operation under a deliberate algorithm policy. The header’s alg value comes from the token and is untrusted input; it must not dictate the verifier’s policy. RFC 8725 says: “Libraries MUST enable the caller to specify a supported set of algorithms and MUST NOT use any other algorithms when performing cryptographic operations.” See RFC 8725, section 3.1.

Cryptographic validation is not the whole acceptance decision. An application also needs to enforce its token profile and check applicable claims against trusted configuration—for example, whether the issuer and audience are expected, whether required subject information is present, and whether time-related claims satisfy the application’s rules. A claim’s presence or readable value is not evidence that it is trustworthy.

| Approach | What it can do | Privacy and trust considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Local decoding software | Display readable components; capabilities depend on the software. | Processing can stay on your device. Decoding alone does not verify a token. |
| Browser-based decoder | May display readable components; support for JWS or encrypted JWE varies. | Local-only behavior must be established for that specific tool. Do not assume a web page keeps pasted data on-device. |
| Application-configured verifier | Can validate cryptographic operations and apply application-specific claim checks when correctly configured. | Requires trusted algorithm, key, issuer, audience, and profile configuration as applicable. A verifier is for deciding whether to accept a token, not merely viewing its contents. |
No decoder should be treated as trustworthy solely because it displays plausible JSON. For sensitive tokens, the key decision is whether processing is demonstrably local; for security decisions, the key distinction is whether a properly configured verifier—not just a decoder—has validated the token.
