Use “go hand in hand” to say that two things are closely connected or tend to occur together. In a code review, name both things and explain the practical concern: “Clear naming and easier maintenance go hand in hand here. Could we rename x to parsedCount so the next reader can see what it represents?” The phrase signals a relationship; it does not, by itself, establish that one thing causes the other.
What does “go hand in hand” mean?
Cambridge defines the idiom as describing things that exist together and are connected; its English Dictionary entry also covers a close relationship in which one thing happens at the same time as, or as a result of, another. Collins similarly describes things that are closely connected and cannot be considered separately. Together, these definitions make the phrase useful for expressing association or co-occurrence, but the wording alone does not prove causation.

For a code review, that distinction matters. If you mean that two qualities often accompany each other, the idiom fits. If you mean a specific code change causes a particular outcome, explain the mechanism instead of relying on the idiom. How to use it in a review comment
Connect two concrete concerns, then make the comment useful by identifying the code issue and asking for a clear next step. For example:

This is an illustrative example, not a quotation. The idiom frames the relationship; the specific naming suggestion tells the author what to consider and why.
GitHub’s guide to optimizing code reviews uses the phrase for the relationship between asynchronous communication skills and treating pull requests as passive documentation. That is a useful model: identify the two practices or qualities you are connecting, rather than using the idiom as a vague compliment or criticism. GitHub’s code-review guide discusses that connection.

Use it for a relationship
The phrase can connect qualities such as readability and maintainability, or practices such as asynchronous discussion and documentation. Google Testing Blog’s 2016 archive describes relationships among style guides and consistency, small changes and lower risk or easier rollback, and code reviews and knowledge sharing. Those are examples of associations a reviewer might discuss; a useful comment still needs to specify what applies to the change at hand. Google Testing Blog’s 2016 archive provides the context.

State a cause directly
If your point is causal, spell out the mechanism. Rather than saying two things “go hand in hand” when asserting that one produces the other, say what the code does and what consequence follows. For example, explain that a particular parsing step can return an empty value and show how the caller handles it. The idiom may suggest a connection, but it is not evidence for a causal claim.

Use go hand in hand as a verb phrase. Hyphenation can vary when the expression is used as a modifier, and there is no universal code-review-specific rule established here. Follow the project’s style guide; if it has no preference, keep the verb phrase unhyphenated. The Art & Logic A+L Style Guide is one example of a style-guide source, not a universal standard.
