For hands-free work dictation, use Gboard voice typing to put spoken words directly into a focused text field. Use Gemini’s microphone when you want to ask Gemini something aloud, or Gemini Live for an ongoing spoken conversation with spoken replies. These are different workflows: Gemini receives your prompt; Gboard types into the app you have open.
Choose the right voice workflow

Dictate into Gmail or another work app with Gboard
On Android, Gboard is the direct route when you want your words to appear in the app rather than in a Gemini chat.

- Open Gmail, Keep, or another app with a text field.
- Tap the field where the text should go so the keyboard appears.
- Tap the microphone on Gboard and speak your message.
- Say punctuation or layout commands where supported, such as “comma,” “question mark,” “new line,” or “new paragraph.” Phrases vary by language.
- Review the text in the field and make any corrections before sending or saving.
Use Gemini’s microphone for a spoken prompt
To ask Gemini aloud rather than dictate into another app, open the Gemini mobile app and tap its microphone. Speak your prompt; you can use Stop to pause and the microphone control to resume, then submit when ready. Google Gemini Apps Help says, “The microphone stays open for up to 5 minutes to listen to your prompt.” That limit describes a Gemini voice prompt, not continuous background dictation.

On supported Android setups, “Hey Google” can launch Gemini when the assistant and Voice Match settings are enabled and available. Depending on the device, touch shortcuts may also include holding the power button or swiping from a screen corner. Wake-word support and quick voice actions vary by device, language, account, and settings; some actions are unavailable for supervised accounts and certain languages.

Use Gemini Live for an ongoing spoken exchange
Open the Gemini mobile app and tap Live, or swipe to the Live screen where that option is supported, then speak. Live is designed for back-and-forth conversation: you can interrupt Gemini while it is talking. Google’s Android help also documents starting it with “Hey Google, let’s talk Live” or “Hey Google, let’s talk,” subject to availability. Google’s cited help pages say Live is available in the Gemini apps for Android and iPhone or iPad, but not in the Gemini web app; rollout and eligibility conditions apply.
When using Live, respect other people’s privacy and get permission before recording or including them in a chat, as Google advises.

Know which Gboard voice features your device supports
Standard voice typing and Gemini voice input are not limited to Pixel phones by the requirements for Gboard’s advanced features. Google says advanced Gboard voice typing requires Pixel 6 or later. On supported Pixel devices, it can add automatic punctuation and voice commands such as “delete last word,” “clear,” “next,” or “stop.”

Voice commands for writing tools are available on Pixel 9 and later. Check your device, keyboard language, and feature settings rather than assuming every command is available. A Pixel is optional for Gemini voice input and ordinary Gboard voice typing.

Check account, language, and privacy limitations
- The Gemini mobile app may not be available for every language, device, account, or location. Some features powered by Google Assistant are unavailable to some work or school accounts.
- Google’s advanced Gboard voice typing documentation says spoken text stays on device except when you invoke “Fix it” or detailed edits. For detailed edits, the voice-command transcript and the full text in the input field are sent to Google servers for processing. Google says no audio is sent and no text or audio is stored on its servers. Review current Google privacy documentation for your device and settings.
- Gemini Live and hands-free activation have their own availability conditions; support for one does not guarantee support for another.
