To use Gemini in Android Auto, connect a compatible Android phone to a compatible vehicle, set Gemini as your phone’s digital assistant, then start a voice session with “Hey Google,” the car-screen microphone, or a supported steering-wheel voice button. Wait for the listening tone before speaking. Use it for tasks such as calls, messages, navigation, and media—not for emergency instructions or other safety-critical decisions.
What you need before using Gemini in Android Auto
For Android Auto projected from a phone, Google lists these requirements: an Android phone with at least 2 GB of RAM running Android 11 or newer, Gemini set as the phone’s digital assistant, and a vehicle that supports Android Auto. Gemini and Android Auto are not available in every language or region, so availability may affect whether Gemini appears. Requirements and availability can change as the feature rolls out. Start a Gemini voice session
- Connect your phone to the vehicle and open Android Auto on the car display.
- Choose one of the available voice controls:
- Say “Hey Google.” This requires Voice Match and “Hey Google” to be enabled.
- Tap the microphone on the car screen.
- If supported by your vehicle, press and hold the steering-wheel voice command button.
- Wait for the listening tone, then speak. If you use the steering-wheel button, keep holding it until the tone. Speaking too early can cause the command to be missed.

Use voice commands for common tasks
Calls
Ask Gemini to call a contact, for example, “Call Mom.” Check that the intended person is being called before continuing if the contact name could refer to more than one person.
Messages
Ask Gemini to send or reply to a message, such as “Send a message to [contact name].” Google says Gemini reads the draft back and asks whether to send it; you can confirm, cancel, or ask for a change. Listen to the full read-back and confirm only if it is accurate. If the exchange starts taking your attention away from driving, stop and handle it when parked. Navigation
Use a spoken request such as “Navigate to [location]” to ask for directions. You can also ask for an estimated arrival time or traffic information. If Gemini or Maps shows multiple possible places, make sure the selected destination is the one you mean before following the route. Typing a destination on the car display is allowed only when the vehicle is in Park, according to Google’s Android Auto navigation guidance.

Ask Gemini to start, stop, or change media. The media app must be compatible with Android Auto and signed in on the phone; some services may require a subscription or premium account. Google’s Android Auto media help covers app requirements.

Reduce distraction while driving
- Keep your eyes on the road and use voice only when doing so does not divert your attention.
- Keep requests short and focused; avoid extended, open-ended conversation while driving.
- Do not treat Android Auto lockouts as a guarantee that an allowed action is distraction-free. Android Auto restricts some interactions, including typing messages while moving and scrolling through long lists. Google explains these restrictions in its Android Auto accessibility and lockout guidance.
- Do not pick up or handle the phone to continue a task while moving. If you need to look something up, correct a message, or resolve a confusing result, wait until the vehicle is safely parked.
What Gemini cannot safely decide for you
Google warns: “Gemini in Android Auto is new and evolving, and can hallucinate and present inaccurate information as factual so should not be relied on for critical information or safety-related matters while operating the vehicle.” Do not rely on it for emergency instructions, driving decisions, or other safety-critical judgments. Use your own judgment and appropriate emergency services when needed.
Google also notes that Gemini is available to everyone in the vehicle, including children, who may hear age-inappropriate content. It advises reminding children that Gemini is an AI tool, not a person.
If Gemini does not hear you
- For a steering-wheel control, press and hold the button until the tone, then speak.
- Reduce background noise where possible and speak after the tone.
- If the vehicle uses an aftermarket receiver, check that its microphone is connected and working.
- If Gemini is not available at all, check phone and vehicle compatibility, confirm Gemini is set as the digital assistant, and consider whether Android Auto, Gemini, or your language and region support the feature.
