Availability is rolling out in stages, and some advanced features require Google Home Premium.
What Gemini for Home does
Google describes Gemini for Home as “Google’s new set of intelligence features for your smart home.” It brings AI features into Google Home, including a redesigned voice assistant, natural-language answers and device control, camera-event understanding, and automation creation.

What you can use depends on your country, language, eligible devices, Google Home app version, and subscription tier. A feature appearing in Google’s descriptions does not mean it is available on every device or in every home.

Google says early access is rolling out to selected countries and languages, with broader availability planned over time. Check Google’s feature availability information for your location before expecting access. The clearest hardware eligibility route Google names is adding a Google Home Speaker (2026); existing eligible speakers and displays may also receive features.

When a household opts in, Gemini for Home becomes available to everyone in that home. Compatible devices use Gemini for Home instead of Google Assistant. Google’s current help documentation says a household cannot switch back after switching, and devices that become compatible later switch automatically.
How to get Gemini in the Google Home app
- Check that your country, language, and devices are eligible, and update the Google Home app. For relevant speaker and display conversations, Google lists app version 4.1 or later as a requirement.
- Open the notification that invites you to try Gemini for Home in the Google Home app, then tap Get started and follow the on-screen prompts.
- If you are setting up the voice assistant from the app, open Home settings and review the Data & access controls as part of setup.
- Before enabling personalized features, review personal-results settings and decide which controls suit your household.
What you can do with Gemini for Home
Control devices and ask questions naturally
On supported speakers and displays, you can use more natural-language requests to control compatible devices, ask for information, and continue a conversation. Device compatibility and feature availability still apply; Gemini does not make every connected product controllable by voice.

Create an automation from a description
In the Google Home app, describe what you want your home to do. Gemini can generate an automation that you can personalize and save. Google’s examples include dimming lights, playing relaxing music, or sending a nightly reminder. Review the generated steps before saving so the schedule, devices, and actions match what you intended.

Understand camera events
Gemini’s camera capabilities can identify and describe specific events from supported cameras. Google’s release notes also say Gemini can use information saved in Ask Home when answering questions about camera history. Camera support and the available questions depend on the device, rollout, and plan.

Use advanced features
Google identifies Gemini Live and AI-powered notifications among the advanced features associated with Google Home Premium. These capabilities are not part of a blanket promise that every Gemini feature is included without a subscription; check Google’s current feature table for the tier and device requirements.
Does Gemini for Home require Google Home Premium?
Not every Gemini feature has the same subscription requirement. Google’s feature table separates capabilities across no subscription, Google Home Premium Standard, and Google Home Premium Advanced. Some advanced features require Premium, including Gemini Live and AI-powered notifications. Eligibility for the overall Gemini for Home experience and particular features can also depend on having a supported device and being in a supported country or language.
Compare the feature you want against Google’s current availability and plan information rather than assuming that a subscription unlocks every feature in every location.

What happens if you switch from Google Assistant?
Opting in applies to the household: compatible devices use Gemini for Home instead of Google Assistant. Google says you cannot switch the household back after making the change. If you are unsure, review the setup details and Data & access controls before confirming, especially if other people in the home rely on the existing assistant.

Privacy and household controls
Google’s feature guide says it does not train generative AI models outside Google Home with users’ personal data. That statement does not replace the controls available for your home: review Data & access and personal-results settings during setup, and consider how personalized answers and camera-history questions fit your household’s preferences.
