The Garmin Approach S72 combines on-course hole views, green-reading tools, shot and swing metrics, and post-round analysis. What you can use depends on the feature: green reading is limited to select courses and requires an active Garmin Golf membership, while optional Approach CT10 sensors add automatic club and shot tracking. Here’s what each tool does and what you need before relying on it during a round.
What the S72 golf features do
Garmin announced the Approach S72 on October 6, 2026. Its golf features span three stages: planning shots on the course, capturing information during play, and reviewing performance afterward. Some advanced features require an active Garmin Golf membership, and course coverage varies. Garmin’s announcement identifies which features depend on membership.

| Feature | When it helps | Requirements or limits |
|---|---|---|
| Aerial hole imagery | Consider the hole layout, layup areas, and safer places to miss. | Garmin marks this as membership-dependent. It supports decisions; it cannot guarantee where a shot will land. |
| Green reading | View green contour information, including left/right break and uphill/downhill slope. | Requires an active Garmin Golf membership and is available on select courses, not every course. |
| Virtual Caddie | Get a suggested club and aim point informed by prior shots, elevation, wind, and hole layout. | Requires accumulated round data and a Garmin Golf app connection, according to Garmin support. See the setup section below. |
| Swing metrics and golf biometrics | Review metrics such as hand speed, backswing length, and wrist rotation, and see how heart rate varied before and after shots. | Garmin says biometric features are not medical devices and are not intended to diagnose or monitor a medical condition. |
| Driving-range activity | Log practice activity into Garmin Connect. | Garmin describes the activity in its announcement; exact S72 menu steps are not established here. |
| Putting analytics | Review speed bias, direction bias, and make rate after a round. | Garmin describes these as Garmin Golf post-round analytics. |
| Approach CT10 sensors | Automatically track shot location, distance, and club type. | Optional accessory; basic golf functions do not require CT10. |
| Compatible laser rangefinder | View distance to the flag. | Garmin lists compatible rangefinders; no particular model is specified here. |
For a practical round, use hole imagery and available green information to plan, use Virtual Caddie or CT10 only if their prerequisites suit your setup, then review practice and putting data afterward. Treat suggestions and mapped contours as information to weigh alongside your own judgment.
How to use green reading on the Approach S72
Green reading is intended for use at the green. Garmin describes marking the flag at the pin, then returning to the ball to view the putt’s break and slope information. The sequence helps you assess the line from your ball rather than relying on a general view of the green.
#1 Best Overall
- Premium golf smartwatch features a lightweight titanium bezel, durable sapphire lens, ComfortFit fabric band, built-in flashlight, speaker and microphone
- Preloaded with 43,000+ full-color CourseView maps; option to get an enhanced view of the shot ahead with aerial imagery (requires a Garmin Golf membership)
- Up to 16 days in smartwatch mode and 20 hours of battery life in golf activity mode, so you can play round after round
- Look back on your round to see how heart rate affected your performance and start to see trends in how your biometric data and score relate (data presented is intended to be a close estimation of metrics tracked)
- Gain a better understanding of your swing during your range session and after your round with swing metrics, which include hand speed, backswing length, wrist rotation and more
- At the green, mark the flag location at the pin.
- Return to your ball and view the green-reading information for the putt, including the displayed break and slope.
Garmin’s S72 announcement says green reading requires an active Garmin Golf membership and is supported on select courses. Course coverage is not universal, so check whether a course is supported before planning to use the feature. The exact S72 button sequence and menu labels are not established in Garmin’s accessible golfing manual page.
How Virtual Caddie works and what it needs
Virtual Caddie uses hole layout, wind, elevation, and your historical club performance to suggest a club and aim point. Its value depends in part on having useful shot history: a recommendation informed by accumulated performance is different from a generic distance estimate.

Garmin’s support information says the S72 series is compatible and lists five rounds with Club Prompt enabled or paired CT10 sensors, plus a connection to the Garmin Golf app, as setup prerequisites. The same support text says recommendations cannot be used with Big Numbers or Tournament Mode enabled. These are Garmin’s stated prerequisites; consult the current support instructions and the full S72 manual for exact setup controls.

Do you need CT10 sensors?
No. CT10 sensors are optional. Garmin says they can automatically record shot location, distance, and club type, making them a route to automatic shot and club tracking rather than a requirement for the watch’s basic golf functions. Garmin lists wireless sensors, including Approach CT10, in its manual sensor information; wireless sensors pair over ANT+ or Bluetooth.

- Stunning 1.2” color AMOLED display brings 43,000+ preloaded courses to life on your wrist
- Be comfortable on and off the course with the lightweight ComfortFit nylon strap
- Battery life: up to 10 days in smartwatch mode and up to 15 hours in GPS mode
- Get distance to the front, middle and back of the green and navigate bunkers, water hazards and layups with hazard view
- Playslike Distance feature tells you how far each shot truly is, with adjusted yardage for elevation changes
The practical choice is between manual use and sensor-assisted tracking: use the watch’s golf tools without CT10 if automatic club-by-club recording is not important to you; consider CT10 if you want Garmin’s stated automatic capture. A compatible laser rangefinder is a separate accessory category Garmin lists for flag-distance information, not a prerequisite for CT10 or green reading.

During play: swing and biometric context
Garmin identifies swing metrics including hand speed, backswing length, and wrist rotation. Golf biometric data lets you review how heart rate varied before and after shots. These are performance and activity insights, not medical measurements: Garmin says the biometric features are not intended to diagnose or monitor a medical condition.

At the range: log practice
The S72 includes a driving-range activity that can be logged into Garmin Connect. Garmin’s announcement names the activity but does not provide a verified sequence of watch controls, so use the current S72 manual for the exact activity-start and save steps.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsAfter the round: examine putting patterns
Garmin Golf post-round putting analytics include speed bias, direction bias, and make rate. These measures can help you review patterns in putting; they are different from the on-course green contour information used to assess a particular putt.

What is known about the watch itself
Garmin’s October 6, 2026 announcement describes 43 mm and 47 mm case sizes, up to 20 hours of on-course battery life for the larger model, and up to 16 days with GPS turned off. Those are manufacturer estimates, not independent test results. The same US announcement lists suggested retail prices starting at $799.99. Availability, actual selling prices, membership entitlements, course coverage, and software menus can change.
Where to find exact watch controls
Garmin’s accessible S72 golfing manual page is marked October 2026, version 1, but exposes only its heading rather than the golf instructions. It therefore does not establish exact button sequences for starting a round, scoring, navigating holes, or ending a round. Check the full current Approach S72 owner’s manual before following control-specific instructions.
