Open the C Menu from the HOME Menu, then create a GameChat room and invite friends—or join an invitation. You can talk using the console’s built-in microphone; a separate microphone is not needed. Nintendo currently requires a Nintendo Switch Online membership and an ongoing internet connection to use GameChat.
What you need to use GameChat
- A Nintendo Switch 2 with an ongoing internet connection. Nintendo says the console checks the network during initial setup to determine whether the connection can support GameChat.
- A Nintendo Switch Online membership. Nintendo’s no-membership GameChat Open-Access Period ran from June 5, 2025 through March 31, 2026, and has ended.
- Friends on your Nintendo Switch friend list who have also approved you for GameChat.
- No extra microphone for voice chat: the console has a built-in microphone.
These requirements and the Open-Access Period dates are stated in Nintendo’s GameChat Guide and FAQ.

Use a camera for video chat
Video chat requires a compatible USB camera, sold separately. Nintendo’s Nintendo Switch 2 Camera is one supported example. A USB-C camera can connect directly to the console; a standard USB camera can connect to the dock. Once connected, open the C Menu in the room and select the camera control to enable video.
#1 Best Overall
- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
Nintendo does not guarantee that other USB cameras will work. To check one, use the console’s Test USB Camera setting. If you only want voice chat, you do not need a camera.
Share your game screen
In the room, open the C Menu and select Share Game Screen. A game’s age rating or parental settings may affect whether another person can see its screen. Sharing may also turn off automatically during privacy-sensitive moments, such as entering a password or payment information.
Nintendo’s feature and privacy details are in its GameChat Guide and FAQ.

Know the group and sharing limits
| GameChat activity | Nintendo’s stated limit |

| People using video chat and/or sharing a game screen at the same time | Up to four total across those functions |
These are Nintendo-published limits, not independent performance-test results.
Set up GameChat for a child or supervised account
GameChat parental controls must be configured in the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app before use by anyone under 16 or anyone with a Supervised Nintendo Account. Nintendo’s GameChat parental controls guide and parent first-time setup guide cover arranging the family group and supervised account, linking the console and app, and setting up GameChat. The parent or guardian must register a phone number to their own Nintendo Account on the child’s behalf.
Choose who the child can contact and what they can see
- Parents approve the friends the child may use GameChat with. If the other account is supervised too, that account’s parent must also approve.
- Parents can allow or disable video chat. When it is allowed, permission may be requested for each session.
- Parents can limit the camera view to face only, person only, or full video, and can withdraw permission.
- Disabling video means the child will not see other users’ camera feeds; game-screen sharing remains a separate feature.
Review activity without viewing conversations
The Parental Controls app can show whether GameChat was used, session start time and length, camera use, and friends contacted. Nintendo says parents cannot access the conversations themselves. See the Nintendo GameChat parental controls guide.

Troubleshoot common GameChat problems
Voice chat does not work
- Complete first-time setup and confirm the console has a continuing internet connection.
- Check that you are in a room with friends who have approved you for GameChat.
- Open the C Menu and make sure your microphone is not muted.
- If the network could not support GameChat during setup, check the connection before trying again.
A USB camera is not detected
Check that it is connected to the console by USB-C or to the dock by standard USB, as appropriate, and run Test USB Camera. Nintendo does not guarantee compatibility for third-party cameras.
A friend cannot see shared gameplay
Check whether the game’s age rating or parental settings restrict visibility. Sharing can also pause during privacy-sensitive actions, including password or payment entry. Some games have specific GameChat behavior; Nintendo directs players to the support information for the individual game.
For Nintendo’s feature guidance, see the GameChat Guide and FAQ.
