On many compact keyboards, hold Fn and press a number-row key to send an F-key command—for example, Fn+1 often sends F1. The mapping is not universal: check the secondary keycap legends or the manual for your exact model and operating-system mode.
How do I press F1–F12 on a compact keyboard?
- Look for a key marked Fn (or a similar layer-control label) and secondary legends on the number row. If the legends are unclear, find the shortcut table in the keyboard’s manual.
- Hold Fn and press the key assigned to the F-key you need. On many 60% keyboards, Fn+1 is F1, Fn+2 is F2, and the sequence continues across the number row. F11 and F12 may use nearby punctuation keys.
- Check the result in the app you are using. If the shortcut triggers media, lighting, or another action instead, consult the exact model’s shortcut table; the key positions and behavior can differ by model or operating mode.
A keyboard without a separate F-row usually places those commands on a secondary layer. QMK’s example uses a momentary Fn layer: holding the layer key activates the alternate mappings, and releasing it returns to the base layout. See QMK’s Keymap Overview.

These examples apply to the named models and documentation, not to every keyboard with a similar layout.

Can I use function keys without holding Fn?
Only if your keyboard supports a toggle or lets you remap the keys. Some keyboards offer an Fn Lock, but its shortcut is model-specific. For example, Microsoft documents Fn+Caps Lock to toggle Fn Lock on its All-in-One Media Keyboard; that combination should not be assumed to work on other keyboards. Consult the manual for your model. Microsoft’s general guidance is to hold Fn and press the key for its alternate command; the command varies by keyboard. See Microsoft Support’s Fn and alternate-command guidance.

What if Fn produces the wrong command?
- Check the exact model and operating mode. A shortcut guide for another keyboard—or another mode of the same keyboard—may show different assignments.
- Look for another layer key or a remapping option. Manufacturers may assign different keys to Fn layers, and supported configuration tools can change those assignments.
- If you use QMK or VIA, check whether a saved keymap is overriding firmware changes. QMK’s FAQ explains that VIA may store a keymap in EEPROM. A firmware edit may therefore appear not to take effect until the stored configuration is addressed. Follow the instructions for your specific board before clearing or resetting configuration, since doing so can remove custom mappings. See QMK’s Keymap FAQ.
- Distinguish the keyboard’s Fn layer from Apple’s platform-level Fn behavior. They are not interchangeable concepts; QMK’s FAQ describes additional constraints on emulating Apple’s Fn key.
How can I make F-keys easier to reach?
If your keyboard supports remapping, assign frequently used F-keys to a more convenient layer or key position using the manufacturer’s official tool or firmware documentation. In QMK, a momentary layer switch activates the alternate layer only while held; positions marked transparent on that layer fall through to the base layer. Review the board’s configuration guide before changing the keymap.
When comparing compact layouts, check whether F-keys require holding Fn or use a lock toggle, how easily the number-row positions can be reached, whether secondary legends are printed on the keycaps, and whether the model supports remapping. Do not assume a familiar Fn shortcut carries over from another keyboard.
