Firefox’s built-in privacy and security settings can reduce tracking, warn about some known dangerous sites, protect connections with HTTPS, and encrypt DNS lookups. On desktop, open Menu → Settings → Privacy & Security to review them. Each control addresses a different risk; none makes every website or download safe.
Start with Enhanced Tracking Protection
Enhanced Tracking Protection (ETP) blocks known trackers and harmful scripts. Mozilla says Total Cookie Protection is enabled by default in Standard mode. Standard blocks tracking content in Private Windows; Strict mode applies stronger blocking and may cause some sites or page features to stop working.

- Open the Firefox application menu and choose Settings.
- Select Privacy & Security.
- Under Enhanced Tracking Protection, make sure protection is enabled. Choose Standard for a sensible starting point, or try Strict if you prefer more blocking and can troubleshoot occasional site problems.
If a site breaks under Strict, switch back to Standard or add an exception for that site. The shield icon beside the address bar and the Protections Dashboard at about:protections show protection activity. Mozilla documents these controls and the dashboard in its Enhanced Tracking Protection guide.
Enable HTTPS-Only Mode for encrypted connections
HTTPS encrypts data traveling between Firefox and a website, helping protect it from being read or altered in transit. HTTPS-Only Mode tells Firefox to use HTTPS when available and warns you if a connection would otherwise use HTTP. Find the setting in Settings → Privacy & Security, under HTTPS-Only Mode, and enable it if you want Firefox to prefer secure connections.

If Firefox displays a warning because a page is available only over HTTP, proceed only if you understand the risk and trust the situation. HTTPS protects the connection; it does not prove that a website is honest, legitimate, or free of malware. Mozilla includes HTTPS-Only Mode among its security and privacy features.
Choose DNS over HTTPS protection to fit your network
Ordinary DNS lookups translate a domain name into the address needed to connect. DNS over HTTPS (DoH) encrypts those lookups between Firefox and a DNS resolver, reducing what someone monitoring your local network can see about your domain queries. The resolver still receives the queries, so DoH does not make them invisible to every party.

In Settings → Privacy & Security, find DNS over HTTPS and review the protection level available in your Firefox version. Mozilla Support describes DoH as “a recommended feature that enhances privacy for everyone” in its DNS over HTTPS overview.

- Increased or Max Protection: Keeps DoH active more consistently with a selected provider. This can interfere with parental controls, local network filtering, VPN settings, or managed workplace and school networks.
Firefox may disable DoH when a VPN, parental controls, enterprise policy, or network configuration requires it. If this is a work or school device, follow the organization’s settings rather than overriding them. Keep Firefox’s deceptive-site warnings enabled
Firefox’s phishing and malware protection warns about sites reported as deceptive, sources of unwanted software, or attack sites. It is a warning layer, not a guarantee that every malicious page or download will be detected. Keep the protection enabled in Settings → Privacy & Security, and treat unexpected download prompts, credential requests, and security warnings cautiously. Mozilla describes the feature in its Firefox security and privacy features.
What each setting does—and does not do

Review protection activity and troubleshoot
Use the shield icon beside the address bar or open about:protections to review ETP activity. If a site behaves incorrectly after changing settings, first check whether Strict mode is responsible; return to Standard or create a site exception rather than disabling every protection. If DNS, filtering, or connectivity changes after enabling a stronger DoH level, check VPN, parental-control, or organization requirements and use the appropriate protection level for that network.
