A practical starting point is a parameterized encode step with explicit input and durable output paths; validate and inspect the job with the OpenJD CLI before running it. For a larger pipeline, make rendering one step and video creation a dependent FFmpeg step.
How OpenJD and FFmpeg fit together
OpenJD is a portable specification for defining batch-processing jobs; it is not an encoder. FFmpeg is the media-processing command-line application that can read inputs, select streams, and produce outputs. A job template connects the two by defining parameters, steps, and executable actions. The scheduler or local runner supplies the runtime environment, including the FFmpeg executable.

A template can accept an input file and an output directory, then substitute those values into the command invoked by an onRun action. This abbreviated YAML illustrates the relationship; it is a conceptual skeleton, not a complete template guaranteed to validate against every OpenJD implementation. Use the full schema and required fields for the specification version supported by your runner.

In a production template, ensure the output directory exists or is created as part of the job, and that the execution environment can write to it. The AWS walkthrough demonstrates a fuller template and an FFmpeg image-sequence encode, including choices such as a 24 fps input sequence, H.264, pixel format, color metadata, and MP4 fast-start behavior. These are choices in that example, not universal settings; adapt them to your footage, delivery requirements, and playback targets. See AWS: Using Open Job Description with FFmpeg.
Send output to durable storage
Do not assume a relative path such as ./output.mp4 points to a persistent destination. In the AWS CLI walkthrough, the generated script runs in temporary space that is cleaned up after execution; an output written there can disappear. Parameterize the output location and choose a directory that the runner or scheduler preserves and that the job identity can write to. Storage and cleanup behavior outside that walkthrough depends on the particular deployment.

Preserve FFmpeg argument order and stream intent
FFmpeg options generally apply to the next input or output file named, so moving a working command into a template can change its meaning if argument order changes. Keep the tested input/output order and place options with the file they configure. FFmpeg can select streams automatically, with behavior influenced by the output format; use -map when you need to control stream selection explicitly. For files with multiple audio tracks, subtitles, or unusual stream layouts, inspect the input and make the intended selection deliberate rather than relying on automatic choice.
For example, -i input.mov identifies an input; output options and the output filename follow it. The exact codecs, mappings, frame-rate handling, and metadata belong to your workflow requirements. Consult the FFmpeg command-line documentation when adapting options.

Validate and inspect the job with the OpenJD CLI
The OpenJD CLI documentation describes commands to check a template, summarize its parameters and steps, and run selected work locally. Exact command availability and behavior should be confirmed against the CLI release installed in your environment; the commands below reflect the documented interface, not a template tested here.
- Check the template:
openjd check path/to/template.yaml. Resolve reported schema or syntax errors before execution. - Inspect the job shape:
openjd summary path/to/template.yaml. Review parameters, steps, and tasks so you can catch naming or dependency assumptions. - Run locally: use
openjd runwith the template and the applicable job parameters to run a selected step. Consult the CLI help or README for the installed release’s exact flags for parameter values and task selection. - Include prerequisite steps when needed: when running a task that depends on earlier work, use the CLI’s documented dependency option so required steps are included rather than assuming their outputs already exist.
The CLI README documents checking, summarizing, parameter passing, task selection, dependency inclusion, and local execution: OpenJD CLI README. Local execution confirms behavior in that local environment; it does not establish that a separate scheduler has identical paths, permissions, installed software, or storage lifecycle.

Extend the job to render frames, then encode them
For a render-to-video pipeline, represent rendering and encoding as separate steps and make the encode step depend on the render step. This makes the handoff explicit: the renderer produces frames, then FFmpeg consumes the resulting sequence. The official OpenJD Blender/FFmpeg sample uses a RenderScene step followed by CreateVideoFromRender, which depends on the render step and invokes FFmpeg over the generated frames.
Use the sample as a pattern for step dependencies and artifact handoff, not as a promise that all schedulers share the same filesystem or retain intermediate files identically. The sample’s requirements comment says it was tested with Blender 4.0.2 and FFmpeg 6.1.1; those are example-specific versions and do not guarantee compatibility with current releases. See the official Blender/FFmpeg sample.
Troubleshoot common workflow failures
- The template fails validation: check YAML syntax, parameter types, required fields, and the specification version supported by the chosen OpenJD implementation. Use the installed CLI’s
openjd checkand review its error output. - FFmpeg cannot be launched: confirm FFmpeg is installed in the execution environment and that
command: ffmpegresolves on its PATH. A template invokes a command; it does not install that command. - The output is missing after a run: check whether the job wrote to a temporary working directory. Set the output parameter to a durable location supported by the runner and verify write permissions.
- The encode uses the wrong audio, subtitle, or video stream: inspect the actual input and set an intentional
-maprather than relying on automatic stream selection. - The encode step cannot find rendered frames: verify the dependency, the frame path produced by the render step, and how the scheduler makes artifacts available across steps. That handoff is deployment-specific.
- A command works locally but not under the scheduler: compare executable versions, paths, environment variables, permissions, and storage behavior. A successful local CLI run does not guarantee identical deployment conditions.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a different task—keeping uploaded videos live on a YouTube channel—StreamNeo is a cloud service rather than an OpenJD/FFmpeg batch workflow. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It does not stream from a camera.
