How to Use FFmpeg with IBM Video Streaming and YouTube

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To send an FFmpeg stream to IBM Video Streaming, copy the selected channel’s RTMP or RTMPS URL and Stream Key from IBM’s Broadcast Settings, then configure FFmpeg to publish to that destination. To send the same program to YouTube as well, use a separate YouTube ingest endpoint and stream key: IBM credentials do not work at YouTube. The workflow below explains the setup and settings, but its example command is illustrative—not a verified, tested two-service command.

What you need before configuring FFmpeg

  • An input FFmpeg can read, such as a video file or a live capture source.
  • Access to the IBM Video Streaming channel you intend to publish to, including its channel-issued ingest URL and Stream Key.
  • If YouTube is a second destination, a live stream in YouTube Live Control Room and its own ingest URL and key.
  • An FFmpeg build with the protocols and codecs you plan to use. Options and support can vary by build; check the installed version’s documentation and help output.

IBM recommends manual configuration for third-party encoders; older Ustream plugin or IBM credential-login flows can cause broadcasting issues. See IBM’s encoder setup guidance.

Find IBM’s channel-specific ingest details

  1. Sign in to IBM Video Streaming and select the channel you will use.
  2. Open Broadcast Settings, then Encoder Settings, and select View.
  3. Copy the channel’s RTMP URL and Stream Key exactly. IBM’s instructions describe the channel-based URL and support for RTMPS in its Broadcast Settings documentation.
  4. Store the key securely, then supply it only to your encoder. IBM warns: “Keep your Stream Key private.” Its app setup guidance also notes that the key is case-sensitive.

Do not put a real key in a public example, screenshot, log, or shell command that will be shared. If you suspect exposure, use IBM’s account controls and current support guidance to replace or revoke the credential if available.

Get YouTube’s separate destination details

  1. Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the live stream for your broadcast.
  2. Copy the ingest URL and stream key shown for that YouTube stream.
  3. Keep these credentials separate from IBM’s. Each service issues credentials for its own ingest destination.

For RTMPS, YouTube requires the correct protocol, server, application path, and port 443; see YouTube’s RTMPS ingest guide. Do not substitute an IBM URL or key into YouTube settings.

Choose an encoding profile before publishing

There is no single bitrate or profile that is automatically right for both destinations. Choose a codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval, and ingest protocol that are supported by both account configurations and fit your available upload bandwidth. If one encoded output cannot meet both destinations’ requirements, use separate output settings and validate each independently.

YouTube guidance for common H.264 profiles

YouTube H.264 target Minimum bitrate Recommended bitrate
720p at 30 fps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps 14 Mbps

These are YouTube’s published recommendations, not IBM guarantees or a promise that a particular network can sustain the stream. YouTube also specifies RTMP/RTMPS streaming, H.264/H.265/AV1 subject to HDR caveats, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Prefer RTMPS when available to encrypt the feed to Google’s servers. Check the current YouTube encoder settings for the complete table and codec qualifications.

IBM’s Pearl-2 numbers are an example, not a universal profile

IBM’s guide for a Pearl-2 encoder in a cloud-transcoding setup gives H.264 Main at 1280×720, 25 or 30 fps, one-second keyframes, 1200–4000 kbps video, and AAC audio at 48 kHz and 128 kbps. That profile is specific to the documented Pearl-2 context; it is not an FFmpeg mandate or a universal setting for every IBM channel. See IBM’s Pearl-2 guide.

Match bandwidth and protocol to the destination

  • Allow headroom above the chosen video bitrate for audio and network variation; avoid setting the stream at the full measured upload capacity.
  • Use a keyframe interval accepted by the destination profiles. YouTube recommends two seconds and no more than four; IBM’s Pearl-2 example uses one second. Confirm the compatible choice for your actual channel and workflow.
  • IBM supports RTMPS. YouTube RTMPS uses RTMP over SSL and port 443, with the correct server and application path required. See YouTube’s RTMPS requirements.
  • YouTube documents HLS as an alternative for HDR or codecs unsupported through RTMP, with higher latency due to segmented delivery. The available IBM documentation here does not establish HLS ingest for this workflow, so do not assume the YouTube HLS setup also works with IBM. See YouTube’s HLS instructions.

Configure FFmpeg output

FFmpeg reads an input, optionally encodes or processes it, and writes an output. Its RTMP protocol documentation describes RTMP URL syntax, while its command-line documentation covers input and output handling: FFmpeg protocol documentation and FFmpeg command-line documentation.

The following is only a schematic example of the single-destination pattern. Replace the placeholders with the exact URL and key issued for the destination; do not publish actual credentials. Confirm the RTMP URL format, options, and codec support against your installed FFmpeg build. This example does not establish or verify simultaneous publishing to IBM and YouTube.

ffmpeg -re -i input.mp4 -c:v libx264 -b:v 5M -maxrate 5M -bufsize 10M -g 60 -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 48000 -f flv "rtmp[s]://DESTINATION-URL/APP/STREAM-KEY"

The values shown are placeholders for an illustrative H.264 1080p30-style profile, not a validated recommendation for your IBM channel. In particular, set resolution and frame rate intentionally, select a bitrate from the target service’s guidance and your connection, and choose a keyframe interval consistent with that frame rate and both destinations. The bracketed protocol notation is explanatory: use a valid RTMP or RTMPS URL, not the literal string rtmp[s].

Sending to IBM and YouTube at the same time

Each output must point to its own service endpoint and use that service’s key. FFmpeg can support multi-output workflows, but the official service-specific material cited here does not verify one exact IBM-plus-YouTube command or guarantee that a particular FFmpeg build, URL syntax, and account setup will work unchanged. Treat any multi-output syntax you assemble as a configuration to validate, not a known-good recipe. Check the installed FFmpeg documentation, confirm that the chosen codecs and profile work for both destinations, and test each output before an event.

A single encoded profile sent to both services is simplest when both accept the same settings. If their compatible profiles differ, plan and validate separate output encoding rather than assuming the settings for one service satisfy the other.

Test and monitor before the real broadcast

  1. Run a private or otherwise appropriate test stream using the intended input, resolution, frame rate, audio, and network.
  2. Include representative motion and audio so you can spot judder, dropped frames, clipping, sync problems, or buffering that a static test image may hide.
  3. Check the receiving service’s stream health and confirm that the picture and sound arrive correctly. YouTube explicitly recommends testing and monitoring in its encoder guidance.
  4. Only begin the event after verifying both destinations independently if you are publishing to both.

Troubleshooting connection and quality problems

IBM rejects the connection or shows no incoming video

  • Cause: Wrong channel URL or key, a copied space, or a key with altered capitalization. Fix: Reopen that channel’s Broadcast Settings and copy the current values exactly.
  • Cause: An older IBM credential login or Ustream plugin path. Fix: Configure the third-party encoder manually with IBM’s URL and key, following IBM’s encoder setup guidance.
  • Cause: A restricted outbound network blocks the ingest connection. Fix: Ask the network administrator to review IBM’s current firewall guidance. IBM documents outbound TCP 1935 for RTMP and separate secure-ingest ports; the correct rules depend on the network and current service guidance, so avoid hard-coding a port rule without checking.

YouTube does not connect over RTMPS

  • Cause: Incorrect protocol, server, application path, or port. Fix: Verify the full RTMPS endpoint and port 443 against the stream’s settings and YouTube’s RTMPS documentation.
  • Cause: IBM credentials were copied into the YouTube output. Fix: Replace them with the separate URL and key from YouTube Live Control Room.

Video buffers, drops frames, or looks poor

  • Cause: The video bitrate exceeds sustainable upload bandwidth or varies too much. Fix: Lower the bitrate or resolution, use CBR where appropriate, and test at the actual broadcast location.
  • Cause: The output frame rate, codec, or keyframe interval is unsuitable for a destination. Fix: Compare each output profile with the current destination guidance and validate the common profile before the event.
  • Cause: One profile is being treated as universal across both destinations. Fix: Check each service separately and use separate encoded outputs if necessary.

Audio is missing or out of sync

  • Cause: The selected input lacks the expected audio stream, or the audio settings are incompatible. Fix: Inspect the input streams with FFmpeg tools, ensure the correct audio input is mapped, and test AAC settings and sync before going live.

Copyright and YouTube channel rules still apply

FFmpeg only encodes and sends media; it does not grant rights to the video, music, or other material you broadcast. Use content you own, have permission to use, or are otherwise entitled to stream. YouTube’s copyright and live-stream policies apply to the broadcast, and using an encoder does not bypass them. Review the current policy and account notices in YouTube before a scheduled stream; the cited encoder guidance covers technical configuration rather than a full account-specific copyright determination.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep uploaded videos playing as a 24/7 YouTube stream rather than encode a live FFmpeg input, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. The stream plays uploaded video, not a live camera feed, and it publishes to YouTube only.
