You can use IBM Video Streaming and a compatible encoder to send a live feed to IBM and YouTube, but the two services have separate ingest addresses and stream keys. IBM documents support for simultaneous live streams to multiple channels for 24 hours or longer; that is a capability statement, not a guarantee of uninterrupted uptime. To send to both IBM and YouTube, configure and test an encoder that supports the required outputs. The documentation reviewed does not establish that IBM itself relays a stream to YouTube.
What you need before you start
- An active IBM Video Streaming account and an IBM channel to receive the feed.
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. YouTube says first-time live activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it ahead of your planned start.
- An encoder that can send to the destination or destinations you need. IBM documents third-party encoder ingest; confirm that your chosen encoder and version can send to both services simultaneously if that is your plan.
- A reliable upload connection with enough capacity for the selected video bitrate and any other activity on the connection.
- A plan for recording and recovery. A very long YouTube stream may not be archived as one complete replay.
IBM’s product page says its platform supports simultaneous live streams to multiple channels for 24 hours or longer. That describes a platform capability, not a service-level uptime promise. Check current account terms and product details on IBM Video Streaming pricing.
Set up IBM Video Streaming and YouTube
- Activate IBM Video Streaming. IBM’s Getting Started instructions describe choosing a subscription or requesting the trial, registering with an IBM ID, verifying your email, signing in to My IBM, and selecting Launch to open the service. Create or select the channel that will receive the broadcast. Signup steps and trial terms may change; check IBM’s current page.
- Enable YouTube live streaming. In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go Live, then use the Stream tab to create or schedule an encoder stream. If this is your first live stream, allow up to 24 hours for activation.
- Copy IBM’s ingest details. In IBM Video Streaming, select the channel, open Broadcast Settings, and select View beside Encoder Settings. Copy the RTMP URL and Stream Key.
- Copy YouTube’s ingest details. In YouTube Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key for the encoder stream you created.
- Configure the encoder destination or destinations. For IBM, enter its RTMP URL in the server or URL field and its Stream Key in the stream name or key field. Add YouTube as a separate destination using YouTube’s URL and key. The exact field names vary by encoder. Do not assume every encoder supports simultaneous outputs, or that IBM relays to YouTube; check the selected encoder’s documentation and test the intended topology.
- Start with a suitable encoding profile. IBM recommends a single 720p source using H.264 Main, video bitrate of 1,200–4,000 kbps, 25 or 30 fps, a 1-second keyframe interval, and AAC-LC audio at 128 kbps for most applications. YouTube’s general guidance calls for CBR and keyframes every 2 seconds (no more than 4 seconds); its recommended H.264 bitrate for 720p at 30 fps is 8 Mbps. These recommendations differ, so there is no single profile established here as optimal for both destinations. Choose settings your encoder and connection can sustain, then check each platform’s stream-health feedback.
- Preview, test, and go live. Start the encoder output and confirm that the feed appears in YouTube Live Control Room preview and in IBM. Check video, audio, and each destination’s health indicators before relying on the stream. YouTube recommends setting up encoders ahead of time, testing backup-encoder failover, and checking that local recording files continue to grow if you are recording locally.
Protect the stream keys
Treat each stream key as a publishing credential. IBM warns that anyone with the RTMP URL and Stream Key may be able to broadcast to the channel. Keep the values out of screenshots, public documents, and shared pages; use private credential storage and restrict access to the encoder configuration. If a key is exposed, replace or reset it through the relevant service’s stream settings before continuing.
Choose a profile, network, and recovery plan
Account for both platforms’ settings
IBM’s suggested 720p profile and YouTube’s 720p/30 recommendation do not match on bitrate or keyframe interval. An encoder may allow per-destination profiles, but support varies. If it does not, select a profile that the encoder can deliver reliably and validate it against both platforms rather than assuming a setting recommended by one service satisfies the other.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Keep upload capacity and failover in view
Both IBM and YouTube emphasize reliable upload bandwidth. Use a stable connection and leave room for other network traffic; the configured video bitrate is not the only traffic on a busy connection. YouTube recommends testing backup-encoder failover. A backup setup is useful only if it is configured and tested in advance, including its destination credentials and the way it takes over.
Decide how you will record
IBM Broadcast Settings describes an auto-recording option that records broadcasts to a channel. Confirm its behavior and retention in your account before depending on it. YouTube says a stream under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all; DVR pause and rewind can also be limited or unavailable for very long streams. If a complete archive matters, consider local recording and a plan based on shorter YouTube sessions, and test that workflow.

Troubleshooting common setup problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not show a live preview | Live streaming is not enabled yet, or the YouTube URL/key is incorrect or assigned to a different stream. | Allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation; compare the encoder destination with the current Live Control Room URL and key. |
| IBM does not receive the encoder feed | The IBM RTMP URL or Stream Key is missing, mistyped, or entered in the wrong encoder field. | Reopen the channel’s Broadcast Settings > Encoder Settings and verify the destination fields. Keep the key private while checking. |
| One destination works, but the other does not | The encoder may not support simultaneous destinations in the selected mode, or one destination’s credentials/settings may be wrong. | Verify support for the exact encoder version and topology; test IBM and YouTube separately, then together. |
| Video is unstable or a platform reports poor stream health | The connection may not sustain the configured profile, or the profile may not suit that destination. | Check upload stability, bitrate, frame rate, keyframe interval, and platform-specific feedback. IBM and YouTube publish different 720p recommendations, so validate the chosen settings at both ends. |
| The broadcast stops after a platform disconnect | The encoder or workflow may not be configured to reconnect or fail over. | Test reconnection and backup-encoder procedures in advance. Do not treat IBM’s 24-hours-or-longer capability statement as an uptime guarantee. |
| A full YouTube replay is missing | The continuous stream may have exceeded YouTube’s 12-hour archive boundary. | Use local recording or shorter sessions if the archive is important; verify the recording files and retention plan. |
