You can use a Raspberry Pi as a YouTube Live encoder by looping an ocean recording with FFmpeg, pairing it with a still image or other video, and sending the encoded feed to YouTube’s Live Control Room. The setup depends on your Pi’s model, installed FFmpeg build, source files, and upload connection, so treat the command below as a starting point—not a tested, universal preset. Test it privately or unlisted and check YouTube’s stream-health messages before relying on it for a long broadcast.
Before you start
- A Raspberry Pi with a suitable power supply for its exact model, boot storage, and a reliable network connection. Raspberry Pi’s setup documentation covers boot media and power; for a headless setup, Raspberry Pi OS Lite and remote-access configuration are options.
- An ocean ambience audio file that you own or are licensed to stream, plus a still image or video to provide the visual portion of the broadcast.
- FFmpeg installed on the Pi, with the input support and encoders required by your chosen command. Package versions and capabilities vary by operating system release, architecture, repository, and build.
- A YouTube channel eligible for live streaming. YouTube says the channel must be verified and have had no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days.
- The stream URL and stream key for your YouTube broadcast. Treat the key like a password.
For operating-system and package setup, use Raspberry Pi’s current documentation for getting started with Raspberry Pi and Raspberry Pi OS. Raspberry Pi documentation recommends APT for software management, but an install command alone does not guarantee that your FFmpeg build has the encoders this workflow needs.

Check the Pi’s FFmpeg build
Open a terminal locally or connect remotely, then inspect the installed version and available encoders:
ffmpeg -version
ffmpeg -encoders
Look for the encoders you intend to use—in the example below, libx264 for H.264 video and AAC audio support. The list can differ by build. If a required encoder is absent, use a package or build that provides it, or adapt the command to encoders available on your device. Do not assume that every Pi model will encode every resolution and frame rate reliably.

Check your recording and rights
Choose an audio file FFmpeg can read, and check the license and terms for the specific recording. A file being available online or included in a sound-effects library does not by itself establish permission to use it in a live broadcast. YouTube’s copyright rules still apply to live streams.
Choose a visual input
YouTube expects a video-and-audio encoder feed. If your source is audio only, use a still ocean image or a video loop as the visual input. The example command below uses a still image; a moving ocean clip may require a different input and can increase the Pi’s processing load. The appropriate resolution and frame rate depend on your material and the Pi’s capability.
Create a YouTube Live stream and get its connection details
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room.
- Create a stream or select one you have already set up.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key displayed for the encoder. The key tells YouTube where to send the feed and allows YouTube to accept it.
- Confirm that live streaming is enabled for the channel before troubleshooting FFmpeg. YouTube’s eligibility guidance requires channel verification and no live-streaming restrictions in the prior 90 days.
Keep the stream key private. Do not post it in a video, screenshot, public repository, or support forum. If you think it has been exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and replace the key wherever your encoder stores it.

Loop the audio and send the feed with FFmpeg
Here is an illustrative command for a still image and an audio file. Replace the filenames and placeholders with your own paths and YouTube connection details. This syntax is not verified on a particular Pi model or FFmpeg build; confirm that your build supports the options and encoders, then test before using it for a public or long-running stream.
ffmpeg -re -loop 1 -framerate 30 -i ocean.jpg
-stream_loop -1 -re -i ocean.mp3
-map 0:v:0 -map 1:a:0
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -tune stillimage
-pix_fmt yuv420p -r 30 -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
-f flv "rtmps://YOUR_YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"
Use the RTMPS ingest URL provided by YouTube for your stream, with the key in the location YouTube specifies. Do not literally leave the example placeholders in the command. Keep credentials out of shell history and scripts that other people can read.
What the important options do
-loop 1and-framerate 30make the still image act as a video input. The image continues while FFmpeg runs.-stream_loop -1is an FFmpeg input option that repeats the following audio input indefinitely. Put it immediately before the input it should repeat.-reasks FFmpeg to read each input at its native rate rather than as fast as possible; it appears before each input in this example.-mapselects the image for video and the ambience file for audio.-c:v libx264selects H.264 video encoding.-c:a aacselects AAC audio encoding.-b:a 128kand-ar 44100set the example audio bitrate and sample rate. YouTube recommends 128 kbps stereo audio and 44.1 kHz for stereo; these are recommendations, not mandatory properties of every source file.-g 60with 30 frames per second targets a two-second keyframe interval. YouTube recommends a two-second interval and says not to exceed four seconds. If you change the frame rate, adjust the GOP/keyframe settings to preserve the interval you intend.-f flvselects the output format commonly used for RTMP/RTMPS ingest. The command’s actual compatibility depends on the installed FFmpeg build and the ingest details YouTube shows for your stream.
The example’s 30 fps, encoder preset, pixel format, and video settings are starting choices, not YouTube requirements or performance guarantees for a Raspberry Pi. YouTube’s current encoder guidance specifies H.264 video, AAC or MP3 audio, CBR, and RTMP/RTMPS ingestion; it recommends RTMPS for encryption in transit. For a production setup, configure constant bitrate (CBR) and choose a video bitrate from YouTube’s current resolution-and-frame-rate table that the Pi and your upload connection can sustain. The example does not set a video bitrate, so add and test an appropriate -b:v value for your chosen quality rather than treating it as ready for every stream.

Test before broadcasting publicly
- Run an upload-speed test on the connection the Pi will use. Compare its sustained upload capacity with the bitrate you plan to send, leaving room for network variation.
- Start FFmpeg with the same type of audio and visual content you intend to broadcast. Watch for encoder errors, dropped frames, or repeated connection failures.
- Check the Live Control Room’s stream-health status and address warnings before depending on the stream.
- Use a private or unlisted test stream where possible. Confirm that YouTube receives both the image and sound and that the ambience repeats as expected.
- Choose standard (normal) latency as a sensible starting point for a noninteractive ambience broadcast. YouTube notes that lower latency can increase viewer buffering; it is more useful when responding to viewers in real time.
Choose settings that match the Pi and connection
Resolution, frame rate, and bitrate
Higher resolution and frame rate require more encoding work and upload capacity. Select a quality the Pi can encode consistently and the connection can sustain, then use YouTube’s current bitrate recommendations for that resolution and frame rate. A static image does not remove the need to encode a video stream.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsKeyframes and audio
Use YouTube’s recommended two-second keyframe interval and do not exceed four seconds. For stereo audio, YouTube recommends 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. These recommendations guide encoder settings; they do not determine whether you have the rights to the recording.
RTMP or RTMPS
Use the RTMPS address when YouTube provides it. YouTube recommends RTMPS because it encrypts data while it travels to Google’s servers.

Troubleshoot common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube receives no signal | Incorrect ingest address or key, live streaming not enabled, or a connection problem. | Confirm the stream URL and key in Live Control Room, check channel eligibility, and verify the Pi can reach the internet. Reset and replace the key if it may have been exposed. |
| FFmpeg reports an unknown option or encoder | The installed build differs from the example or lacks an encoder. | Check ffmpeg -version and ffmpeg -encoders. Use options and encoders available in that build or install a compatible package. |
| Audio plays once and stops | The loop option may be missing, set incorrectly, or placed before the wrong input. | Place -stream_loop -1 immediately before the audio input and verify that FFmpeg can read that file. |
| Video or audio is missing | Input order, mapping, file path, or source format may not match the command. | Check each input filename and format, then confirm that the -map options select the intended video and audio streams. |
| Stream-health warnings, dropped frames, or unstable playback | The chosen bitrate may exceed the upload connection’s dependable capacity, or the Pi may not encode the workload reliably. | Test the connection and encoder under representative conditions. Reduce resolution, frame rate, or bitrate as needed, using YouTube’s current settings guidance, then test again. |
| The stream disconnects | A network interruption, encoder failure, or YouTube-side connection drop may have ended the feed. | Check the Pi and network, review Live Control Room health messages, and restart or correct the encoder as indicated. A local FFmpeg process does not itself guarantee automatic recovery after a dropped connection. |
| Copyright claim or restriction | The ambience recording or visual may not be cleared for this use. | Review the asset’s license and YouTube’s notice. Replace material you are not authorized to stream with content whose terms explicitly cover your intended broadcast. |
Keep the stream running: Raspberry Pi or cloud
With the Pi method, the device, power, network, and FFmpeg process need to remain available for the stream to continue. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring stream health; a process running on a home device is not the same as automatic recovery if YouTube drops the connection.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams uploaded material rather than a live camera feed. Each slot runs one always-on stream with 24/7 looping and playlists, 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots, support from the StreamNeo team, and automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot with no re-encode or quality tiers. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account.
