Use OBS scenes to change the picture during the broadcast, then add timestamped chapter labels to the archived video’s description after the stream ends. These are separate jobs: scene changes affect what viewers see live; description timestamps provide navigation in the replay. The available YouTube guidance does not establish that chapters appear or update on the active live player, so treat chapters as a post-stream step.
What changes live—and what becomes a chapter
An OBS scene is a composition of sources sent to the stream, such as a background video, image, or other visual elements. Switching scenes changes the outgoing picture. A YouTube chapter is a timestamp and title in a video’s description that divides the recording into navigable sections. One does not create the other automatically. OBS’s overview of scenes and transitions and YouTube’s chapter guidance describe these separate functions.

Prepare the ambient scenes in OBS
Create a scene for each visual state
- In OBS, create and name a scene for each distinct state you want to show—for example, “Dawn,” “Rain on the window,” or “Fireplace at night.”
- Add the appropriate image or video sources to each scene and check the composition in the preview. Keep names distinct enough to identify quickly during a long session.
Choose a transition
Use a built-in transition such as Cut or Fade, and set its duration in OBS. For a calm ambient broadcast, a restrained fade is an editorial choice, not a YouTube requirement. OBS documents built-in transitions and configurable quick transitions in its overview.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsSet up scene switching
Assign OBS hotkeys to the scenes you intend to switch to, then test each one before relying on it during a long broadcast. A physical controller is optional: OBS documents scene hotkeys, and its plugins guide describes hardware communication through plugins, including Elgato Stream Deck as an example. Plugin compatibility can depend on OBS version and platform.

Log scene changes while the stream runs
Keep a timestamp log as you switch scenes. Record elapsed time and a descriptive title each time—for example, “02:15 — Rain on the window.” This is much easier than trying to reconstruct a long stream from memory.
You can write the log manually or use a timestamp-capture utility. The browser-based Stream Marker Tool describes capturing elapsed timestamps and titles for later use in a YouTube description. It is optional; neither OBS nor YouTube requires it. Whatever method you use, save the log somewhere you can refer to after the stream.

Add chapters to the archived video
- After the broadcast, open the archived video in YouTube Studio and compare your log with the actual video timeline.
- Correct times if the recording starts late, contains a pre-roll, was trimmed, or uses a different time zero than your log. The chapter timestamps refer to the video’s timeline, so a timing offset must be corrected before you publish the list.
- Edit the video description and add one timestamp and title per line. YouTube’s manual chapter rules require the first timestamp to start at 00:00, at least three timestamps in ascending order, and each chapter to be at least 10 seconds long. Follow YouTube Help’s current video-chapter guidance.
- Save the description and check the archived video to confirm that the chapter bar appears. If it does not, check the timestamp format, ordering, minimum count, and chapter lengths against YouTube’s rules.
Illustrative description block—replace these labels and times with actual scene changes from the recording:
00:00 Dawn lake 02:15 Rain on the window 04:30 Fireplace at night
The example has three ascending timestamps, begins at 00:00, and leaves more than 10 seconds between markers. Its labels do not trigger visual changes; the scene switches must already be present in the video.
