Use FFmpeg’s concat demuxer with a text playlist whose entries are in the exact order you want, then loop that input with -stream_loop -1. This works most reliably when every file has matching streams, codecs, and time bases. If they do not, normalize the files first or concatenate them with the concat filter and re-encode.
1. Put the videos in an explicit playlist
Create a plain-text file such as playlist.txt, with one file entry per video and entries in playback order:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
file 'intro.mp4'
file 'chapter-01.mp4'
file 'chapter-02.mp4'
file 'outro.mp4'
FFmpeg follows the order in this list. Use paths relative to the directory where FFmpeg runs, or provide absolute paths. An explicit list is safer than a shell wildcard: wildcard expansion may not match the sequence you intended. For filenames containing quotes or other special characters, follow the escaping rules in the FFmpeg formats documentation.
2. Check that the files can be concatenated
The concat demuxer is intended for files with matching streams, codecs, and time bases. If those properties differ, the playlist may fail or transitions may stall or behave unexpectedly; listing files in the right order does not make incompatible media compatible. See the concat demuxer requirements.

When the files already match
Use the concat demuxer directly. Check representative files before starting a long stream, including their video and audio streams, frame rates, and timing. Differences in resolution, frame rate, codec, or audio layout are signs that you may need a preparation step.
When the files differ
Choose a common output profile and normalize the source files to it before using the demuxer, or use FFmpeg’s concat filter to decode and re-encode them as a sequence. FFmpeg’s FAQ distinguishes the concat filter as the route for concatenation when re-encoding is needed. Normalizing ahead of time takes preparation and storage for intermediate files; using a filter requires encoding compute and a quality decision. Exact filter syntax depends on your source media and intended output, so there is no single safe filter command for every playlist.
3. Loop the playlist and send it to YouTube
For compatible, prepared files, this is an illustrative command shape—not a tested, universal recipe. Replace the example bitrate, destination, and stream key for your source media and YouTube’s current recommendations:

-rereads the input at its native rate rather than as fast as possible;-stream_loop -1requests indefinite looping.-f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.txtselects the concat demuxer and names its input list.-safe 0permits paths the demuxer’s default safety check may reject; use it only with a playlist you control.-c:v libx264and-c:a aacencode video and audio. The example’s-b:v 4500k,-maxrate,-bufsize, and audio bitrate are starting values only, not universal YouTube settings.-g 60sets a 60-frame GOP. FFmpeg option placement matters: input options must appear before the input they apply to, while output encoding and muxing options belong before the output URL. Consult the FFmpeg documentation if you change the command’s inputs or outputs.
Set the YouTube output profile
YouTube’s live encoder settings recommend a two-second keyframe interval and say not to exceed four seconds. The page lists bitrate recommendations by codec, resolution, and frame rate rather than one bitrate for every stream. For H.264, the English page retrieved on October 3, 2026 listed 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps; check the live table when configuring your stream because these platform recommendations can change. The command’s 4,500 kbps example is not a recommendation for those profiles. YouTube also lists CBR and AAC or MP3 among its RTMP/RTMPS encoder settings.
Use the stream destination and key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted ingestion; see Encrypt your stream using RTMPS. Keep the stream key private: do not include a real key in a published command, screenshot, or public log.

4. Test the sequence and monitor stream health
- Run a short private or otherwise safe test with representative motion and audio, not just a static frame.
- Check the YouTube Live Control Room for stream health and messages, and compare the actual output resolution, frame rate, codec, keyframe interval, bitrate, and audio codec with YouTube’s current guidance.
- Watch at least one file boundary. Confirm that the next entry starts in the intended order and that playback continues without a stall.
YouTube recommends testing with audio and moving video and monitoring stream health during the event. The example command has not been validated against your FFmpeg build or media; test it with your actual files before relying on it for a continuous broadcast.
5. Troubleshoot order, boundaries, and ingestion
- Videos play in the wrong order: inspect
playlist.txtitself and reorder its entries. Do not assume wildcard expansion or another file-selection step preserved your intended sequence. - Playback stalls or breaks when a file changes: check whether files have matching streams, codecs, and time bases. Also inspect durations and timestamps, audio layout, and whether sources need normalization. Correct order alone does not guarantee seamless transitions.
- YouTube reports a stream problem: verify the actual output profile against YouTube’s current encoder table, including resolution-specific bitrate, frame rate, two-second keyframes (not over four seconds), CBR, and supported audio settings. Check that your available upload rate can sustain the configured output.
- The stream will not connect: confirm the destination URL and stream key in Live Control Room, use RTMPS if appropriate, and make sure the key has not been exposed or changed.
These checks address common failure categories, but they do not identify every possible FFmpeg boundary or ingestion error. Use the diagnostic message shown by FFmpeg or YouTube to narrow down the cause.
