A 24/7 YouTube stream will not necessarily pick up a new, replaced, or deleted video just because the file changes in a folder. The encoder or streaming service must refresh its media playlist or library. First confirm how your specific setup handles playlist updates; if it cannot rescan safely, update the playlist and use the software’s supported reload or restart method, with a known-good fallback input ready.
Why folder changes may not reach a live stream
A live broadcast has two distinct parts: the broadcast YouTube receives, and the media input or playlist your encoder sends. YouTube’s Live Streaming API manages broadcast and stream resources; it does not establish that an encoder watches a local folder for changes. Adding, removing, or replacing a file therefore does not prove that the active process will update its playlist.

There is no universal folder-watching method that applies across encoders and operating systems. Check the documentation for your exact player, encoder, and version, then test the update procedure before relying on it during a broadcast.
Safely update the videos in an active stream
- Identify the active media source. Determine whether the encoder is reading a saved playlist, a generated HLS playlist, a service library, or another input. Record the software and version.
- Check its refresh behavior. Confirm whether it rescans a directory, reloads a playlist file, or requires a restart. Do not assume that a file-system change refreshes an already-loaded playlist.
- Prepare the replacement content. Finish uploading or copying the new video before adding it to the active playlist. Confirm that the file is complete and playable, and avoid removing the current known-good input until the replacement has been checked.
- Update the playlist using the supported path. If the software has a documented reload or rescan command, use that. If it requires a restart, schedule the restart and make sure the encoder can reconnect to the same YouTube broadcast or stream configuration.
- Keep a fallback input ready. A known-good video or slate can prevent a missing, corrupt, or still-uploading file from leaving the encoder with no usable media. Test the fallback before the stream depends on it.
- Verify the result. Check the encoder’s input and output status and confirm in YouTube Studio that the broadcast is receiving video and audio. If the new item has not appeared, restore the last working playlist and troubleshoot outside the live path.
What FFmpeg playlist modes do—and do not—solve
FFmpeg’s format documentation describes HLS playlist modes, not a general-purpose directory watcher. An event playlist can only be appended to; a VOD playlist must not change. These constraints concern how FFmpeg generates HLS output and should not be mistaken for instructions to make a local media folder refresh itself. Because the documentation changes as FFmpeg evolves, check the documentation for your installed version before changing a live workflow: FFmpeg formats documentation.

If you are generating HLS for YouTube ingestion, apply YouTube’s HLS-specific requirements: use TS segments, send them with HTTPS POST or PUT, and maintain a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments. These are requirements for HLS ingestion, not general settings for every YouTube livestream. See YouTube’s HLS ingestion instructions.
Choose a workflow based on where the video library lives
| Workflow | What to verify before relying on it | Key risk to manage |
|---|---|---|
| Local folder and encoder | Whether the active encoder rescans the folder, reloads a playlist, or needs a restart | A file may change on disk while the running playlist remains unchanged |
| Service library or cloud storage | Whether edits to selected content sync into an active broadcast, and how long uploads or synchronization take | Content selected at setup may not reflect later library changes |
| Generated HLS playlist | Whether the playlist mode and segment behavior fit the stream and the installed FFmpeg version | HLS playlist rules do not provide a general folder-watching feature |
Managed 24/7 services: confirm live synchronization
OneStream Live documents setting up a 24-hour stream by selecting videos from a device, its storage library, or cloud storage. Its Help Center article, updated September 3, 2026, says the 24/7 feature requires Enterprise and allows a maximum duration of 30 days. That setup description does not establish that later edits to a connected folder or selected source automatically enter an active broadcast. Confirm that specific behavior and the current plan terms with the provider before choosing it for a changing library. See OneStream Live’s 24/7 streaming instructions.

Plan the archive separately from the live playlist
YouTube says, “If your live stream is less than 12 hours, YouTube can automatically archive it for you,” and recommends keeping a local archive as a backup. A stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Automatic archiving is not a guarantee for every stream under 12 hours, so plan your own recording if retaining the broadcast matters. See YouTube’s live stream archive guidance.
Troubleshooting playlist updates
- The new video does not appear: The encoder may have loaded the playlist once and kept using it. Check its rescan or reload behavior, then use the documented refresh path.
- The stream goes blank after an edit: The replacement may still be uploading, unreadable, or corrupt. Restore the last known-good playlist or switch to the tested fallback input before investigating the file.
- A restart does not restore the stream: Check that the encoder still has the intended YouTube stream configuration and that YouTube is receiving the broadcast. The Live Streaming API controls broadcast and stream resources; it does not refresh a local media folder. See YouTube Live Streaming API documentation.
- HLS ingestion is rejected: If you are using HLS, check the HLS-specific segment format, HTTPS method, and rolling-playlist limit. Do not apply those requirements to a different ingestion workflow.
- A long stream is missing from archives: Do not rely on YouTube to capture a stream exceeding 12 hours; maintain a local recording when an archive is important.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for keeping uploaded videos live 24/7. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. This avoids needing a home computer or connection to stay on, but its description does not promise automatic synchronization when a video folder changes. Treat playlist edits as a separate workflow and confirm how you will update content before relying on them.
