Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTo repeat one local video file in a YouTube Live broadcast, use FFmpeg’s input options -re -stream_loop -1 before the file’s -i, then encode or copy the media to the RTMPS server URL and stream key shown in YouTube Studio. The command below is a starting point, not a guarantee: verify the file’s streams, YouTube preview, encoder output, upload capacity, content rights, and archive expectations before relying on it.
FFmpeg command to repeat a video indefinitely
Replace input.mp4 with your file and replace the destination placeholder with the server URL and stream key supplied for your YouTube Live event. Keep the key private; it functions like a password.

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i input.mp4
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 4500k -maxrate 4500k -bufsize 9000k
-g 60 -keyint_min 60 -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
-f flv 'rtmps://SERVER-URL/STREAM-KEY'
This example transcodes video to H.264 and audio to AAC. Its bitrate and keyframe values are illustrative, not universal settings. Choose values that fit the resolution and frame rate you actually send, YouTube’s current recommendations, and your stable upload capacity. FFmpeg must also have the requested encoder available. See FFmpeg’s command-line documentation.
What the input options do
-stream_loop -1tells FFmpeg to repeat the input indefinitely. It is an input option, so place it before the corresponding-i.-rereads the file at its native frame rate (equivalent to-readrate 1). FFmpeg documents this pacing as useful when output packet timing matters, including live streaming. For a prerecorded file, put it before the input as shown.-i input.mp4identifies the local video file. The input’s actual audio and video streams must be compatible with the output you request.
Transcode or copy the existing streams?
The sample transcodes with libx264 and AAC, which lets you choose output codecs and bitrate but uses CPU resources. To avoid transcoding, you might consider -c copy; that can reduce encoder work, but it is only suitable when the input codecs, timestamps, and container/output requirements are compatible. Do not assume every file can be copied cleanly to YouTube ingest. Check the file and test the result before scheduling an important broadcast.

Check the file and FFmpeg before broadcasting
Confirm the input streams
Inspect the file so you know whether it has video, audio, and the codecs, frame rate, and dimensions you expect. The example assumes both video and audio. If the file has no audio, or if you add explicit -map options, adjust the command to match the streams actually present; a command that requests a missing stream can fail.
Confirm encoder availability and output
Check that your FFmpeg build includes libx264 and the other encoders named in your command. Start the command early enough to read its console output for input, encoder, or connection errors. A process that has started is not proof that YouTube is receiving a valid stream: check the YouTube preview and stream health before going live.

Create the YouTube Live event and connect FFmpeg
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and create or select the live stream. For a scheduled event, set it up before the planned start so you have time to test the encoder connection.
- In the stream’s encoder settings, copy the YouTube server URL and stream key. YouTube treats the key as a password used by the encoder. Paste them into the destination required by your FFmpeg setup; do not publish the key in a public script, screenshot, or article.
- Run FFmpeg. Check its output for successful input processing and a continuing connection, then confirm that YouTube displays the incoming preview and healthy stream status.
- For a scheduled stream, use the preview to verify picture and sound, then click Go live in the Live Control Room when ready. YouTube’s encoder workflow is described in Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP, for standard ingestion. Its supported video codecs for RTMP/RTMPS include H.264, H.265, and AV1, with up to 60 fps; supported audio codecs include AAC and MP3. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval; the interval must not exceed four seconds. Match codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate to the current YouTube encoder settings and bitrate guidance rather than treating the sample command’s bitrate as a universal target. YouTube documents HLS as an alternative for cases such as HDR or codecs unsupported by RTMP, with higher latency; most FFmpeg-to-YouTube workflows should follow the standard RTMPS ingest instructions unless there is a specific reason to use HLS.

Validate bandwidth, preview, and live operation
- Allow upload headroom. Your connection must sustain the actual outgoing bitrate reliably, not merely reach it in a speed test. Other devices or traffic can reduce available upload bandwidth and cause drops.
- Test before the event. YouTube recommends testing the encoder setup and monitoring stream health. Confirm the preview shows the expected video and audio, and that FFmpeg continues sending without errors.
- Check the loop boundary. Watch the transition from the end of the file back to its beginning. A loop can repeat indefinitely without being seamless; gaps, a jump in picture, or audio discontinuity may come from the source or its timestamps.
- Keep the machine and connection running. In this local-file workflow, FFmpeg depends on the computer, the file being accessible, and a working internet connection for the whole broadcast.
Copyright, reused content, and YouTube archives
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A detected match may replace the live image with a placeholder; if the content remains, YouTube may interrupt or terminate the stream. Even if you have a license, the rights holder may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Review YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams and confirm that your rights cover this use.

Copyright permission and monetization eligibility are separate questions. YouTube’s reused-content review is distinct from copyright enforcement and is not decided by permission or fair use alone. Repeating a video does not by itself establish eligibility for monetization; see YouTube channel monetization policies.
YouTube’s encoder setup instructions say streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not count on automatic archiving for a stream lasting 12 hours or longer. If an archive matters, plan for that limit and check the relevant live settings in Manage live stream settings.

Troubleshooting common FFmpeg-to-YouTube problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg exits immediately or reports an encoder error | The file path is wrong, an expected stream is absent, or the FFmpeg build lacks a requested encoder. | Confirm the input path and inspect the file’s audio/video streams. Verify encoder availability and revise the command to match the input. |
| YouTube receives no preview | The destination URL or key may be wrong, the event may not be set up for the encoder, or FFmpeg may not have connected. | Copy the server URL and key again from the selected event, check FFmpeg’s connection output, and confirm the correct stream is open in Live Control Room. |
| Preview appears but drops or reports poor health | Upload capacity may be unstable or insufficient for the outgoing bitrate. | Check stream health and network use; lower the selected output bitrate if appropriate for the resolution and frame rate, using YouTube’s current recommendations. |
| Video is black, silent, or has the wrong format | The input may lack the expected stream, or the output codec/settings may not match the file or ingest configuration. | Inspect the input streams and FFmpeg output, then confirm picture and sound in YouTube’s preview before going live. |
| Keyframe or ingest warning | Keyframe interval, bitrate mode, codec, or other encoder settings do not match YouTube’s recommendations. | Use CBR, target a two-second keyframe interval (never over four seconds), and check the current codec/resolution/frame-rate table in YouTube’s encoder settings. |
| Stream stops after a content match | YouTube may have detected third-party material. | Review live copyright status and rights. If licensed, ask the rights holder about Content ID allowlisting; permission alone does not guarantee monetization eligibility. |
| Video repeats but the transition is rough | The beginning and end may not align, or the source’s encoding or timestamps may produce a discontinuity. | Review the source at the loop boundary and test the complete output; looping does not make a file seamless automatically. |
Or let it run in the cloud
