Make the countdown a separate video segment, then place it immediately before each story. If the countdown and story have compatible streams, the FFmpeg concat demuxer can join them without re-encoding; if they need filters or have different formats, normalize them and use the concat filter instead. For a reusable workflow, prepare one countdown clip and prepend it to each story’s input list.
Choose the countdown format first
A countdown can be visual, spoken or musical, or both. For an on-screen 3–2–1, you can render a short clip with changing text or make three brief clips and join them. For a spoken or musical countdown, prepare an audio segment and insert it before the story’s audio. Decide whether the picture should continue, hold on a title card, or show a countdown; then make the segment with the audio and video streams your final output needs.

There is no FFmpeg-prescribed duration or sound design for a children’s-story countdown. Pick a length that suits your presentation, and preview the transition rather than treating any particular timing as a standard.

Check that your FFmpeg build has drawtext
The FFmpeg filter documentation describes drawtext, which can draw text over video and center it using expressions based on frame and text dimensions. The filter’s availability depends on how FFmpeg was built and on required libraries. Check your local build and its documentation before relying on a filter or option; the online docs track a moving, newest revision. See the FFmpeg documentation page for that version caveat.

Render a one-second test frame
This command creates a one-second black 1280×720 video with a centered white “3”. It is a single-number title, not a complete changing countdown:
ffmpeg -f lavfi -i color=c=black:s=1280x720:d=1 -vf "drawtext=text='3':fontcolor=white:fontsize=120:x=(w-text_w)/2:y=(h-text_h)/2" -t 1 countdown-frame.mp4
For a real sequence, change the displayed text at the intervals you choose with a time-based drawtext expression, or render separate short segments for each number and join them. Validate the expression, font availability, and quoting with your installed build. Filter expressions and file paths may need different escaping in different shells.

Put the countdown before a story
Use the concat demuxer when stream copy is suitable
The concat demuxer reads a text list in order. It can avoid re-encoding when the files have compatible corresponding streams, codecs, and time bases. It is not a way to join arbitrary MP4 files: inspect the inputs first, and use a filtered, re-encoded route if their video or audio parameters are incompatible.

For one story, save this as story-list.ffconcat. The first line enables automatic format recognition and must appear exactly as shown, without a byte-order mark or leading variation:

ffconcat version 1.0
file 'countdown.mp4'
file 'story.mp4'
Then run:
ffmpeg -f concat -safe 0 -i story-list.ffconcat -c copy story-with-countdown.mp4
-c copy copies streams rather than re-encoding. The -safe 0 option permits paths that may not meet the demuxer’s default safe-path rules, so use it only with a list you control. Quote or escape paths with spaces and special characters according to the concat demuxer’s syntax.
The concat demuxer documentation explains stream compatibility and timestamp behavior. It adjusts timestamps between files; differing stream lengths or inaccurate declared durations can create gaps or other boundary artifacts. Preview the join and listen at the transition before using the output.

Use the concat filter when processing is required
If you must scale, normalize, overlay, filter, or re-encode, use the concat filter in a complex filtergraph instead of expecting stream copy to fix mismatched inputs. Build corresponding video and audio streams consistently. For multiple inputs, FFmpeg uses -filter_complex; -vf and -af are per-stream video and audio filter aliases, respectively. The FFmpeg FAQ recommends the concat filter when re-encoding is needed.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute| Input situation | Direction | Condition to check |
|---|---|---|
| Countdown and story already have compatible streams, codecs, and time bases | Concat demuxer with a file list and -c copy |
Check stream correspondence and durations; timestamp differences can affect the join. |
| Inputs need filters, normalization, overlays, or re-encoding | Concat filter in a complex filtergraph | Construct matching output video and audio streams. |
| Inputs differ in dimensions, frame rates, codecs, or audio layouts | Normalize the relevant streams, then concatenate with re-encoding | The appropriate normalization depends on the actual media; do not assume stream copy will work. |
Repeat the process for many stories
- Prepare one countdown clip. Make sure it contains the picture and audio streams you want before each story.
- Create a separate list per output. Put the countdown first and that story second. For example, pair
countdown.mp4withstory-a.mp4, then make a distinct list forstory-b.mp4. - Choose the join method for the files. Use the demuxer and stream copy only when the corresponding streams are compatible; otherwise filter and re-encode.
- Keep output filenames distinct. Avoid overwriting an input or another story’s output.
- Inspect a representative result before batching. Check the countdown-to-story boundary for a pause, missing or repeated audio, clipping, or an unwanted visual change.
For an audio-only countdown, insert its audio before the story audio. For a video with sound, make an intentional choice about what plays under the countdown—silence, the countdown sound, or another audio bed—and ensure the output’s audio and video stay aligned.

Common problems and fixes
- “No such filter: drawtext.” The installed build may not include the filter or its required libraries. Check the local FFmpeg build and documentation, or create the countdown text in another editor and use that clip as an input.
- Concat reports mismatched streams or the output fails at the join. The inputs may not have corresponding compatible streams, codecs, or time bases. Inspect the media and take the filtering and re-encoding route rather than using
-c copy. - A blank, delayed, or uneven transition appears. Compare the segment durations and stream lengths. The demuxer’s timestamp adjustments can expose duration differences; preview and correct the source timing or use a filtergraph appropriate to the inputs.
- The text command fails on a font or quote. Confirm the font is available to the build and adjust quoting for your shell and filtergraph. Test with a simple frame before rendering a batch.
- Audio is missing or starts abruptly. Check whether both segments contain audio, and whether your chosen concat path includes matching audio streams. Listen across the boundary and adjust or filter the audio as needed.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your finished stories are for a continuous YouTube channel, StreamNeo is a cloud service that keeps a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live; StreamNeo loops the videos without requiring a computer, OBS, or home connection to stay on. It does not stream from a camera or to platforms other than YouTube.
Nothing has to stay on at home. Uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot regardless of quality. If YouTube drops the stream, StreamNeo automatically recovers. The first day is free with no card; the monthly option is $9.99 per month.
