To stream a video file from a Mac to YouTube Live with FFmpeg, create a live event in YouTube Studio, copy its stream endpoint and key, then have FFmpeg read the file in real time and send it to YouTube. For a dependable starting point, encode H.264 video and AAC stereo audio, use a constant bitrate and a two-second keyframe interval, and choose a bitrate your internet connection can sustain. Test the YouTube preview before going live.
What you need before starting
- A video file accessible from your Mac and an FFmpeg build that includes the encoder and protocol you plan to use.
- A YouTube live event and its ingest endpoint and stream key from Live Control Room.
- A stable upload connection with enough capacity for the selected video bitrate plus audio and network overhead.
YouTube supports RTMP and RTMPS ingestion and recommends RTMPS because it encrypts data in transit to Google’s servers. Use the endpoint and protocol shown for your event, and confirm that your FFmpeg build supports the selected protocol. YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, up to 60 fps, and constant-bitrate encoding in its live encoder settings.

Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish it, include it in screenshots, or paste it into public logs or shared scripts. The command below uses an obvious placeholder, not a real key.

Create the YouTube live event and get its key
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live to open Live Control Room. Prepare a scheduled or immediate stream according to your event needs.
- In the stream setup, copy the server or ingest URL and the stream key supplied for the event. Keep them private.
- Leave the Live Control Room open so you can check the incoming preview and stream health after FFmpeg connects.
YouTube account eligibility and any account-specific restrictions are not established by these encoder settings; if Studio does not offer live streaming, resolve the account’s eligibility or restrictions there before troubleshooting FFmpeg.

Check the file and choose copy or re-encode
FFmpeg can either pass compatible audio and video through unchanged (streamcopy) or decode and encode them into output formats suitable for YouTube. Streamcopy is fast and avoids additional quality loss, but it cannot resize, filter, or fix incompatible streams. Transcoding gives you format control at the cost of CPU work and another lossy encode if you use lossy codecs.
Inspect the streams
Use FFprobe if it is included in your FFmpeg build to inspect the file before selecting a method:
ffprobe -hide_banner -i "input.mp4"
Review the video codec, resolution, frame rate, audio codec, sample rate, and number of tracks. Multiple audio tracks or unusual codecs may call for explicit stream selection or conversion. The file extension alone does not establish that its streams will work in the destination muxer.

When streamcopy is appropriate
Use -c copy only when the source streams, timestamps, frame rate, and output container are accepted by the YouTube ingest path. It avoids decoding and re-encoding, but will fail or behave incorrectly if the source is unsuitable. If conversion, resizing, filtering, or codec compatibility is needed, transcode instead. FFmpeg’s official documentation explains its input/output structure, option ordering, and streamcopy behavior.
Choose resolution, frame rate, and bitrate
Do not choose settings solely to maximize resolution. Match output quality to the source and to the upload capacity you can sustain reliably. YouTube’s current guidance gives these H.264 figures for 1080p at 30 fps:
| Output | YouTube bitrate guidance | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| H.264, 1080p30 | 5 Mbps minimum; 14 Mbps recommended | Choose a stable target within the capacity of your connection; these are recommendations, not a guarantee of uninterrupted streaming. |
For H.264, YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. For stereo audio, its advanced settings recommend 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps; for 5.1 audio, 48 kHz and 384 kbps. Its SDR guidance specifies Rec. 709 color space and 8-bit. Check YouTube’s encoder settings for the codec and output you intend to use; bitrate guidance varies by codec and resolution.

For an H.264 30 fps output, a GOP of about 60 frames corresponds to the recommended two-second keyframe interval. For other frame rates, set the GOP to roughly twice the frames per second. Keep the audio and video bitrate together below the upload rate your connection can maintain, leaving room for network overhead and fluctuations.
Run FFmpeg to send the video to YouTube
Replace input.mp4, YOUR_INGEST_ENDPOINT, and YOUR_STREAM_KEY with your file, the exact endpoint shown in Studio, and your private key. The following is an encode-oriented example for H.264 at 1080p30 with AAC stereo audio. It is a template, not a tested command for every Mac, input file, or FFmpeg build.
ffmpeg -re -i "input.mp4"
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -pix_fmt yuv420p
-r 30 -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0
-b:v 8M -minrate 8M -maxrate 8M -bufsize 16M
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2
-f flv "YOUR_INGEST_ENDPOINT/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"
-re goes before the input so FFmpeg reads the file at approximately real-time pace rather than sending it as fast as possible. The example targets 8 Mbps video, a value within YouTube’s stated H.264 1080p30 range; adjust it to the source and dependable upload capacity. The 60-frame GOP gives a two-second interval at 30 fps. libx264 and the FLV muxer must be available in your build, and the output URL must match the endpoint’s required protocol and format. If the endpoint or build calls for a different supported muxer or protocol, adapt the output accordingly.

FFmpeg options are order-sensitive: input options belong before the relevant -i, and output options belong before their output URL. See the FFmpeg documentation if you need to change input or output handling.
Streamcopy template for compatible files
If inspection confirms that the file’s streams and timestamps suit the output, a copy template is:
Recommended Free Tools
ffmpeg -re -i "input.mp4" -c copy -f flv
"YOUR_INGEST_ENDPOINT/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"
This does not convert codecs, correct a frame rate, or apply filters. If YouTube does not accept the streams or the preview is missing audio or video, use the encode-oriented method or explicitly convert the incompatible stream. Keep the actual key out of the command when sharing it or capturing a screenshot.

Verify the preview and monitor the broadcast
- Start the FFmpeg command and watch its output for connection errors or encoding failures.
- In Live Control Room, wait for YouTube to detect the incoming stream and show a preview. Check that the picture moves and that audio is present; a static frame or silent feed can mask a faulty source or track selection.
- Before the event, test with audio and movement similar to what you plan to stream. YouTube Help explicitly says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
- During the broadcast, monitor YouTube’s stream-health messages and FFmpeg output. If YouTube reports a problem, adjust the stream based on the reported issue rather than raising bitrate blindly.
- When the event is over, stop FFmpeg cleanly and check the event’s ending behavior in Studio.
Troubleshooting common FFmpeg-to-YouTube problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not detect a stream | Wrong endpoint or key, protocol mismatch, or missing FFmpeg protocol support. | Copy the endpoint and key again from the correct event, verify the URL format, and confirm the FFmpeg build supports the selected protocol. Keep the key private while checking it. |
| FFmpeg reports an encoder or muxer error | The installed build may not include libx264, AAC encoding, or the selected output muxer. |
Check the build’s available encoders and formats; use a build with the needed support or choose a supported compatible option. |
| Video connects but is black, frozen, or missing | Wrong stream selection, unsupported video stream, or a source/timestamp issue. | Inspect the file’s streams with FFprobe; select the intended video stream explicitly if necessary, or transcode it to a supported format. Confirm moving video in Studio’s preview. |
| There is no audio or the wrong audio plays | Wrong or multiple audio tracks, unsupported audio codec, or missing audio in the source. | Inspect the audio tracks, select the intended track, and transcode to AAC stereo if appropriate. Check audio in the YouTube preview. |
| Stream health reports instability or dropped frames | The selected bitrate may exceed reliable upload capacity or the connection may fluctuate. | Check upload bitrate and YouTube’s stream-health messages. Reduce the output bitrate or resolution until the connection can sustain it. |
| Streamcopy fails while encoding works | The source codec, timestamps, frame rate, or container combination is unsuitable for the output. | Use transcoding for the incompatible stream; streamcopy cannot filter or convert it. |
Copyright and YouTube policy checks
Having a file on your Mac does not by itself establish permission to broadcast it. Before streaming, confirm you have the necessary rights to the video, music, and other included material. YouTube may detect copyrighted material during a live broadcast, and account or content restrictions can affect live streaming. Review YouTube’s current rules in live encoder guidance and the applicable YouTube policies before an event. A technical preview confirms ingestion, not rights or monetization eligibility.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want a YouTube channel to keep looping uploaded videos without leaving your Mac on, StreamNeo is a cloud option. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded video at the quality you made it, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card.
