Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

For YouTube Live, configure FFmpeg with the current ingest URL and stream key from Live Control Room, then handle a failed FFmpeg process or publishing connection separately with retry logic or a process supervisor. Keep HTTP reconnect flags before the HTTP input’s -i argument.
What FFmpeg’s reconnect options do—and what they do not do
FFmpeg documents reconnect, reconnect_at_eof, reconnect_on_network_error, reconnect_on_http_error, and related options for its HTTP protocol. They can help FFmpeg reconnect to an HTTP source that disconnects. RTMP is a separate protocol; FFmpeg’s RTMP publishing example uses an RTMP URL and -f flv. The HTTP options do not, by themselves, make FFmpeg retry a YouTube RTMP output connection. See the FFmpeg HTTP protocol documentation and RTMP protocol documentation.

HTTP input options
reconnect: reconnect after a disconnection before the input reaches EOF.reconnect_at_eof: treat EOF as an error and reconnect. This can suit an intended endless or live HTTP source, but can cause unwanted retries if EOF means a finite file has ended.reconnect_on_network_error: reconnect for TCP or TLS errors during connection.reconnect_on_http_error: reconnect for selected HTTP status codes. The documented syntax accepts individual codes such as503and groups such as4xxor5xx.reconnect_streamed: allow reconnects for streamed, non-seekable inputs.reconnect_delay_max: set the maximum retry delay in seconds.reconnect_max_retriesandreconnect_delay_total_max: limit the number of retries or total retry delay.respect_retry_after: honor an HTTPRetry-Afterheader rather than using exponential backoff.
These settings apply to an HTTP connection, not every protocol FFmpeg can use. Their precise availability and behavior can vary by FFmpeg version and build. Current FFmpeg trunk source lists implementation defaults of 120 seconds for reconnect_delay_max, unlimited retries (-1) for reconnect_max_retries, and 256 seconds for reconnect_delay_total_max; these are not guaranteed defaults for every installed release. Check ffmpeg -version, local help, and documentation for the matching release. See FFmpeg’s current HTTP source.
Use reconnect flags on an HTTP input
Options that configure an input belong before that input’s -i URL. For example, this illustrative command retries an HTTP source while publishing its output to an RTMP destination:

ffmpeg -reconnect 1 -reconnect_streamed 1 -reconnect_delay_max 30
-i "https://example.invalid/live-source"
-c copy -f flv "rtmp://ingest.example.invalid/app/STREAM_KEY"
The .invalid hostnames are placeholders, not working endpoints. Replace the input with the actual HTTP source and obtain the output server URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room. This command illustrates option placement only: the HTTP flags apply to the source before -i; they do not guarantee gapless recovery or a successful RTMP output reconnect.
Decide whether EOF means failure
Do not add -reconnect_at_eof 1 automatically. Use it only if the HTTP source is meant to continue indefinitely and an EOF should count as an interruption. For a finite file or a source where EOF is normal, enabling it can cause FFmpeg to retry a source that has ended as intended.

Configure FFmpeg for YouTube Live
- Open YouTube Live Control Room. Get the current server URL and stream key for the stream you intend to run. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions explain where to enter these in an encoder.
- Protect the stream key. Treat it like a password: do not put it in public examples, screenshots, logs, or repositories. If you reset it, update FFmpeg with the new key from Live Control Room.
- Choose the supported ingest protocol and settings. YouTube’s current encoder settings page lists RTMP/RTMPS, supported video and audio codecs, and encoding guidance. It recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. Use the current table for your resolution, frame rate, and codec rather than relying on a generic old bitrate or keyframe recipe.
- Test before the event. YouTube recommends testing the encoder and monitoring stream health and messages in Live Control Room. Confirm that the intended stream is receiving a signal before relying on it.
As one example of guidance that depends on output settings, YouTube’s current encoder settings page recommends a 5 Mbps H.264 bitrate for 1080p at 30 fps. That is YouTube’s platform recommendation, not a universal minimum or a measured result; check the current table for other resolutions and frame rates.

1. HTTP input source
If the source is HTTP, check whether it is live or finite and whether it is seekable. Match the HTTP reconnect settings to the failure you need to handle, and place them before that source’s -i. Avoid treating a normal EOF as a failure unless the source is meant to be endless. See the HTTP protocol options.
2. FFmpeg process and RTMP output
If FFmpeg exits or its RTMP output fails, the HTTP reconnect options do not establish output retry behavior. Handle process restart or retry explicitly—for example, with a process supervisor or a retry loop appropriate to your operating environment. A restart may create a visible interruption; neither a successful reconnect nor uninterrupted continuity is guaranteed by the HTTP input flags.

3. YouTube ingest setup
Verify the current server URL, stream key, and protocol in Live Control Room, then check its stream-health indicators and messages. If the key was reset, replace the old key wherever the encoder uses it. YouTube’s setup guidance covers server URL and key entry.
4. Local network
YouTube advises leaving upload-bandwidth headroom; its current streaming tips recommend 20% headroom. For primary and backup encoders, its guidance says to account for the primary encoder, backup encoder, and that headroom. A wired Ethernet connection can remove a weak Wi-Fi hop, but it cannot fix an ISP, routing, or ingest-side failure. YouTube cautions, “A disruption on your connectivity could mean a broken stream.” See YouTube’s streaming tips.

If you rely on a backup encoder, test failover rather than assuming it works. YouTube recommends stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable during a test, then checking that the player rolls over to the backup. See YouTube’s backup encoder guidance.
