How to Schedule a YouTube Playlist on a Raspberry Pi in India

To start a YouTube playlist at a set time on a Raspberry Pi, schedule a browser kiosk or digital-signage player to open it during the required time window. Set the Pi’s clock to India time, then test the exact playlist, playback transitions and recovery: a schedule launches content but does not guarantee that YouTube will play continuously or that the playlist will repeat.

Choose how the Pi will play the playlist

Approach Best suited to What to check
DIY Chromium kiosk A basic setup where you are comfortable configuring Raspberry Pi OS and need a browser to open a playlist page. Autostart location for your OS and desktop, Chromium’s executable name, autoplay behavior, playlist ending, and how the browser restarts after a crash. Raspberry Pi OS releases use different autostart arrangements; follow instructions for your installed release rather than copying a path blindly. DigitalSignage.com’s Raspberry Pi guide includes kiosk and systemd examples.
Digital-signage player A setup that benefits from a scheduling interface, screen controls or player management. Schedule granularity, compatibility with your Pi and player version, YouTube support, network dependence, and recovery features. PiSignage documents date and time scheduling and says MPV can handle certain YouTube streams. PiSignage playlist documentation

PiSignage documents schedule templates with start and end dates, playback windows, selected days or dates, and multiweek cycles. Its group settings separately describe daily screen on/off and reboot schedules; a reboot schedule is not a playlist schedule. Check the installed version and settings because player behavior and available options are product-specific. PiSignage documentation

Set up and test a scheduled playback window

  1. Choose the playback method. For a simple setup, configure a Chromium kiosk and an operating-system scheduler or startup configuration to open the playlist page. For schedule templates and player controls, configure a signage player. PiSignage says Chromium is the default player in version 4+ and describes MPV for certain YouTube streams; verify what your installed version actually uses. PiSignage group documentation
  2. Set the Pi’s clock and time zone. Set the system to India local time and confirm it synchronizes correctly. Create a schedule for a time soon enough to observe. Scheduling documentation describes time windows, but does not establish every product’s time-zone controls or clock-sync behavior, so verify the result on your own device.
  3. Schedule the playlist. In a signage player, create or select a schedule template and set its start and end dates, time window, and applicable days or dates. If using a browser, configure the relevant OS scheduler or kiosk startup method to open the playlist URL at the required time. A Raspberry Pi forum reply from 2019 suggested cron to launch a browser with a playlist address, but that community suggestion is not current implementation documentation; check cron syntax and browser paths for your OS.
  4. Check that the videos can play in the chosen context. Open the playlist on the Pi itself. If using an embedded playlist, the owner must allow embedding; most age-restricted videos cannot play on third-party websites. YouTube also requires an HTTP Referer for embedded playback. YouTube’s embed instructions
  5. Test the whole playback window. Watch at least one video transition and determine what happens when the playlist reaches its end. YouTube may show a “Continue watching?” prompt after 60 minutes of uninterrupted autoplay on the web or 180 minutes on TV. These are YouTube’s documented prompt thresholds, not guarantees that a Pi browser or signage player will behave exactly like either context. YouTube Help: “Continue watching?”
  6. Test unattended recovery. Restart the Pi, briefly interrupt the network, restore it, and check whether playback returns to the scheduled content. A DIY kiosk can use a process supervisor such as systemd to restart a crashed browser; a kiosk by itself does not provide remote restart, health reporting or an offline cache unless the chosen management system supplies them. Handle YouTube autoplay and playlist limits

YouTube’s instructions for autoplaying an embedded video say to add &autoplay=1 to the embed code after the video ID. That setting requests autoplay for the embedded video; it does not ensure that an entire playlist will continue indefinitely or override YouTube playback interruptions. • Embedding is disabled: Use a playback route permitted by the video owner; an embedded player cannot make a video play when embedding is disallowed.
  • The video is age-restricted: Most age-restricted videos cannot be watched on third-party websites, so an embedded signage page may not work.
  • The playlist pauses: Check for YouTube’s “Continue watching?” prompt and test the actual player context over a long enough period. The schedule does not dismiss that prompt.
  • The playlist ends: Confirm whether your chosen player starts it again or stops. Do not assume a time schedule also means repeat playback.

Plan for network loss and offline content

Treat YouTube as an online source. Test the connection where the display will be installed, and check your ISP or mobile-data plan against the quality you intend to play. The available sources do not establish typical Indian data costs, connection reliability or a Raspberry Pi YouTube bandwidth figure, so those depend on your location, provider and video selection.

YouTube’s India offline-download information covers downloads in its mobile app, not a supported way to cache a playlist on a Raspberry Pi signage player. Eligibility and Premium requirements vary; YouTube says some downloads may be available for up to 48 hours before reconnecting is required, with different periods for some locations or content. For an offline fallback, use locally stored material you have the rights to store and display, and confirm the player supports it. Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to try
Playlist starts at the wrong time Incorrect device clock, time zone or schedule days. Check the Pi’s displayed time and time zone, then run a near-term test and observe the start.
Browser opens but video does not play Autoplay behavior, unavailable video, embedding disabled, or an age restriction. Test the playlist directly on the Pi; if embedded, verify the owner permits embedding and check the video’s restrictions.
Playback stops during a long window YouTube’s “Continue watching?” prompt, a playlist ending, or a network interruption. Observe the player during a long test, note whether the playlist ends, and restore the network to confirm the player recovers.
Playback does not resume after a browser crash No process supervisor or restart behavior is configured. Configure and test a suitable supervisor, such as a systemd service for a DIY kiosk, using instructions that match your Raspberry Pi OS release.
Embedded video works on a computer but not on the Pi The embed may lack an HTTP Referer, or the video may not be permitted in third-party playback. Use YouTube’s documented embedding requirements and test the specific video on the actual Pi player.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a YouTube channel that stays live around the clock rather than a display that plays a playlist at scheduled hours, StreamNeo is a separate option: it loops uploaded videos from the cloud, not from a camera, and streams to YouTube only. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay running at home; each slot streams your upload at its original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. It is not a replacement for a Pi schedule that must start and stop a physical display at set times. See StreamNeo or start the free day.
