How to Use FFmpeg Hardware Encoding for a 24/7 YouTube Stream on Linux

A practical guide to checking Linux GPU-encoding support, configuring FFmpeg for YouTube Live, looping a file and supervising a continuous stream.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To run a 24/7 YouTube stream from Linux with FFmpeg hardware encoding, confirm that your GPU, Linux driver and FFmpeg build support the same encoder; configure the output to meet YouTube’s ingest settings; and supervise the process so it can recover from failures. A working FFmpeg command is only one part of an always-on stream: it does not keep a host powered, restart a failed process, monitor the feed or control every YouTube broadcast setting.

What you need before configuring FFmpeg

Hardware encoding depends on a compatible GPU or other supported device, its driver stack, and an FFmpeg binary built with the corresponding encoder. A GPU’s presence alone does not establish that the installed FFmpeg can use it. The input also matters: a looped video file and a live camera or other live source require different input handling.

  • Identify the Linux distribution, GPU, driver and FFmpeg version. Record the output of ffmpeg -version so you know which build you are configuring.
  • Check the installed encoders with ffmpeg -encoders. Look for the encoder that matches your intended path, such as h264_nvenc, and verify that the device and driver support the required codec, profile and resolution.
  • Inspect the options available in that exact build with ffmpeg -h encoder=h264_nvenc, replacing the encoder name as appropriate. Options differ among FFmpeg builds and encoder APIs; do not assume a command written for another release applies unchanged.
  • Measure stable upload capacity and choose an output bitrate with room for audio and normal variation. A speed-test result is a planning aid, not a guarantee of uninterrupted streaming.
  • Keep your YouTube stream key private. Treat it like a password: do not publish it, commit it to a script repository or expose it in shared logs.

Set the output to YouTube’s ingest requirements

YouTube Help’s encoder guidance (publication year not stated) lists RTMP and RTMPS ingestion, H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 video options, frame rates up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. For SDR, its advanced guidance specifies Rec. 709 and 8-bit video. YouTube recommends RTMPS, saying: “We recommend streaming to YouTube Live with RTMPS, a secure extension to the popular RTMP video protocol.” Use the server URL and stream key shown in your YouTube encoder setup, and prefer RTMPS when your selected FFmpeg build and ingest endpoint support it.

Choose resolution and video bitrate

The figures below are YouTube’s recommended video bitrates, not total bandwidth including audio, and do not guarantee that a connection will remain stable. YouTube advises choosing a quality the internet connection can support and recommends a speed test. Leave upload headroom rather than matching the measured connection exactly to the video bitrate.

1080p30 10 Mbps 5 Mbps
1080p60 12 Mbps 6 Mbps

Source for every value in the table: YouTube Help, “Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions,” year not stated. These are H.264 video figures. Account for the audio bitrate separately when estimating the stream’s total upload use. If the connection is unstable, reduce resolution, frame rate or bitrate instead of planning to run continuously at the platform minimum.

Match keyframes to the frame rate

A two-second keyframe interval means a GOP length of about twice the frame rate: for example, 60 frames at 30 fps or 120 frames at 60 fps. Set the output frame rate and GOP consistently, then verify the encoder’s actual output. A two-second interval follows YouTube’s recommendation; do not let the interval exceed four seconds.

Keep rate control and color settings in view

Use CBR behavior for the YouTube output. NVIDIA’s FFmpeg guide explains that bitrate, maximum rate and VBV buffer settings work together; it documents equal -b:v and -maxrate values for enforcing CBR behavior and gives a medium-buffer example for ordinary live streaming. Exact option behavior depends on the installed encoder and FFmpeg build, so confirm the help for your local encoder. For SDR, configure Rec. 709 and 8-bit output when the source and selected encoder path allow it; do not apply SDR settings blindly to an HDR workflow.

Choose a Linux hardware-encoding path

Pick the path your installed device, driver and FFmpeg build actually support. The categories below are not interchangeable recipes, and no single option is established as best for every workload.

Path What to verify Important trade-off or constraint
NVIDIA NVENC The installed FFmpeg exposes the NVIDIA encoder, and the GPU and driver support your chosen codec, profile and output. NVIDIA documents separate rate-control, GOP and VBV controls. Check local encoder help rather than copying options from another FFmpeg version.
Intel QSV The device, driver and FFmpeg build support both the required decode and encode stages for your chosen pipeline. FFmpeg documents a QSV accelerated transcoding path that requires decoder and encoder support and no filters in that path. This is a constraint of that path, not a blanket ban on every QSV workflow with filters.
VAAPI The selected Linux driver and GPU support the needed codec profile and encoding entry point, and FFmpeg can access them. VAAPI is a Linux hardware-acceleration interface; actual codec and profile availability depends on the device and driver.

FFmpeg’s documentation describes the QSV and VAAPI paths; NVIDIA’s “Using FFmpeg with NVIDIA GPU Hardware Acceleration” documents NVENC usage. For any of them, consider whether filters require frames to move between hardware and system memory, and test the complete path you intend to run. Compare quality, throughput and power use under your own workload; there is no general result here that establishes one path as superior. No particular GPU model can be recommended without the exact workload and compatibility details.

Example: loop a local file with NVENC

This is an illustrative command shape for a local file with video and audio, not a verified end-to-end recipe. Replace the placeholders, match the output settings to the chosen YouTube quality, and confirm every option with your installed FFmpeg encoder help. It assumes a 1080p30 H.264 output and uses the corresponding YouTube-recommended video bitrate. The input’s frame rate, timestamps, dimensions, audio, GPU, driver, FFmpeg build and YouTube configuration may require changes.

  -f flv "$YOUTUBE_RTMPS_INGEST_WITH_KEY"

Set YOUTUBE_RTMPS_INGEST_WITH_KEY to the RTMPS ingest address and stream-key destination supplied in YouTube’s encoder setup. Protect that value: putting a key directly in a shell command can expose it through shell history or process inspection, depending on how the command is run. Use an appropriately protected configuration mechanism and restrict access to it. The example’s buffer size and audio bitrate are illustrative settings, not YouTube recommendations; verify them and the available options locally. If the input has no audio stream, the audio mapping will fail; adapt the mapping and audio handling rather than assuming every file contains audio.

-stream_loop -1 asks FFmpeg to repeat the local input, while -re reads it at its nominal rate rather than consuming it as fast as possible. The command does not create a looped live camera feed. For a live source, replace the file input and loop behavior with the source’s input format and device or network parameters; those details depend on the source and cannot be filled in without knowing it. If using a different frame rate, set -r and -g to produce roughly two-second keyframes at that rate.

Configure the YouTube broadcast separately

The encoder connection and the viewer-facing broadcast are distinct parts of YouTube Live. Google’s broadcast-and-stream model describes a 24/7 feed as one possible scenario. In YouTube’s live setup, configure the broadcast and its encoder details, then confirm whether the broadcast should start automatically for your intended workflow. A connected FFmpeg process does not by itself determine every event or broadcast lifecycle setting.

YouTube’s encoder setup guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not establish that one continuous 24/7 stream will be archived in full or persist indefinitely. If you need a complete recording, plan and test a separate archive strategy rather than relying on the live-stream archive.

Make the process recoverable for unattended use

FFmpeg does not provide a complete 24/7 operations plan. Run it under a process supervisor such as systemd, using a dedicated unprivileged account, a deliberate restart policy, protected and predictable logs, and appropriate startup ordering if the network or mounted input must be ready first. Choose restart behavior carefully: repeated failures should be visible rather than hidden behind endless restarts.

Monitor the stream, not just the process

  • Alert on process exit, encoder errors and lack of frame progress; a process can remain alive while useful output has stalled.
  • Watch for dropped frames and ingest status in the encoder and YouTube’s live interface.
  • Protect logs and rotate them so they do not grow without bound or reveal a stream key.
  • Document recovery steps for network loss, host restart and GPU or driver failure. Check that the source file or live-input device is available after startup.
  • Deliberately test a process restart and a reconnect before relying on the setup unattended. These are operational recommendations, not YouTube availability guarantees or the results of a reliability test.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely area to check What to do
FFmpeg reports an unknown encoder The installed binary may not include the encoder, or the encoder name may not match the build. Check ffmpeg -version and ffmpeg -encoders. Use an encoder-enabled build compatible with the device and driver, then inspect its encoder help.
Encoder initialization fails Device access, driver support, codec profile or resolution compatibility. Confirm the Linux driver can access the GPU and supports the requested encoding entry point and output. Test with the simplest supported settings before adding filters or other processing.
QSV accelerated path fails when filters are added The selected path may require decoder and encoder support without filters. Check the exact QSV pipeline and FFmpeg documentation. The no-filter requirement applies to the documented accelerated transcoding path; assess whether another supported path fits the filtering need.
YouTube rejects or does not receive the stream Ingest URL, stream key, protocol, output format or broadcast setup. Recheck the server URL and key in YouTube’s encoder setup, use a supported RTMP(S) endpoint, and verify the broadcast’s configuration separately from the encoder connection.
Connection is unstable or frames drop Upload capacity may not sustain video plus audio and variation in the connection. Measure stable upload capacity, leave headroom, and lower output quality or bitrate if needed. YouTube’s listed minimum bitrate is not a guarantee of reliable delivery.
Stream ends when the video reaches its end The input is not being looped or the command’s input path differs from the example. For a local file, check the loop option and input ordering. For a live source, do not use file-loop assumptions; troubleshoot the source-specific input instead.
FFmpeg restarts but viewers still lose the feed A process restart does not prove that the new encoder session reconnected successfully or that the broadcast is active. Check the new FFmpeg logs, frame progress, YouTube ingest status and broadcast settings. Test the recovery sequence before leaving it unattended.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep uploaded videos looping on a YouTube channel, rather than encode a live camera or other live input with your own FFmpeg pipeline, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The service loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It supports the video as uploaded up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube streams from uploaded videos, not camera input. Start the free day with StreamNeo.
