Use FFmpeg’s concat demuxer to feed compatible prerecorded podcast files to one FFmpeg input, then send that input to YouTube Live. The playlist joins the files in sequence; it does not loop them forever or guarantee an uninterrupted broadcast. To keep the stream going, you must handle playlist exhaustion, timestamps, encoding, network stability, and YouTube’s live-stream settings.
What an FFmpeg concat file does—and does not do
The concat demuxer reads a text file listing media files and presents their packets as one virtual input. FFmpeg adjusts timestamps so the first file starts at zero and each later file follows the previous one. This can avoid re-encoding when the inputs are compatible.

A concat file is not a YouTube playlist or a streaming service. When its last entry ends, the input ends. It does not automatically repeat the list, recover from an encoder or network failure, or ensure YouTube keeps receiving data. See the FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation.

Prepare compatible podcast files
The demuxer is designed for files with the same streams, codecs, and time bases. Differences in stream layout or timing can cause errors or playback artifacts. FFmpeg’s documentation puts the central requirement plainly: “All files must have the same streams (same codecs, same time base, etc.).”

- Check that every file has the same audio and video stream layout. Audio-only and video-with-audio episodes, for example, are not automatically interchangeable.
- Where possible, use matching codecs and time bases across the files.
- Check file duration and integrity. An inaccurate duration—such as an estimate that does not match a truncated file—can place later timestamps incorrectly.
- If files need normalization, filtering, or re-encoding to match, use the concat filter approach instead of assuming the demuxer can reconcile them.
Create the concat playlist
Save a plain-text file named episodes.ffconcat beside the podcast files. The first line must be exactly ffconcat version 1.0, with no leading spaces or byte-order mark. Put one directive on each line:

file 'episode-03.mp4'Use paths relative to the playlist for a portable, straightforward setup. The concat demuxer’s safe option defaults to 1: in safe mode, paths must be relative and use the portable character set, and unsafe paths or directives are rejected. Do not switch to -safe 0 as a routine fix; it permits arbitrary filenames, so use it only when you trust the playlist and understand why it is needed.
When to specify a duration
Add a duration directive immediately after a file entry when you need to override the duration FFmpeg reads for that file. Use a verified duration; a wrong value can shift the timestamps of following files and cause artifacts.

file 'episode-02.mp4'Durations here are seconds. For filenames containing spaces or special characters, follow FFmpeg’s quoting and escaping rules in the concat demuxer documentation rather than assuming ordinary shell quoting applies to the playlist.
Choose the right FFmpeg concat method
“Concat” can refer to three different FFmpeg mechanisms. Choose based on whether the inputs are compatible and whether you need re-encoding or filtering. FFmpeg’s FAQ on concatenating media distinguishes the demuxer and filter approaches.

Send the playlist to YouTube Live
First create a YouTube Live event and copy its stream key. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or include it in a shared script. YouTube’s encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS ingestion and lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 video options, with frame rates up to 60 fps. The example below uses H.264 video and AAC audio, a common FFmpeg-to-YouTube setup.

The bitrate and keyframe settings shown are an example for H.264 at 1080p30, not universal values. The command assumes the source video can be encoded at 30 fps and that the playlist is valid. If your files are audio-only or you need a different output resolution, frame rate, codec, or ingest URL, adapt the command and apply the corresponding YouTube settings.
Set bitrate and keyframes for your actual output
YouTube recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe frequency, and says not to exceed four seconds. The appropriate bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate. For H.264, YouTube’s current guidance lists the following recommendations; they are configuration-specific recommendations, not guaranteed stream-health results.

These values are from YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance, accessed in 2026. For a two-second keyframe interval, set the GOP length to roughly twice the output frame rate: 60 frames at 30 fps or 120 at 60 fps. In the example command, -g 60 and -keyint_min 60 set a 60-frame GOP at 30 fps. Select the YouTube guidance for your actual codec, resolution, and frame rate rather than copying a bitrate from another row.
Allow bandwidth headroom
YouTube recommends having 20% more upload bandwidth than the total stream bitrate. Add the video and audio bitrates when estimating the total, then check that the available upload capacity can sustain the stream with that headroom. YouTube also recommends testing your chosen settings against the available connection; its streaming tips advise testing before the event, checking the preview, and monitoring stream health.
Make a scheduled stream last longer than one playlist
A playlist with three episodes ends after episode three. The demuxer does not provide a loop directive. For a longer broadcast, build a playlist long enough for the intended runtime or use a separate, tested orchestration method that restarts FFmpeg or prepares another playlist before the current one ends. Confirm how your YouTube event behaves at the end of its input; do not assume a process restart will resume the same event automatically.

For a genuinely continuous operation, plan for the whole chain: input files, playlist timestamps, FFmpeg process, encoder output, network connection, and YouTube ingest. A correct concat file solves only the input-sequencing part. Test the complete setup, including any restart or backup-encoder procedure, before relying on it for a long broadcast.
Troubleshoot common failures
