Turn on Fall Detection and Emergency SOS before you need them, then check how your Pixel Watch connects to emergency services. Fall Detection can call after a detected hard fall if you do not respond; Emergency SOS lets you start a call manually. Neither feature guarantees that a call will connect or that every fall will be detected.
Turn on Fall Detection
Enable the feature on your watch or in the Google Pixel Watch app. Google’s Fall Detection setup guide gives these paths:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- On the watch: Press the crown, tap Safety, choose Fall detection, and turn it on.
- In the phone app: Open Google Pixel Watch, tap Settings > Safety & emergency > Fall detection, and turn it on.
Allow Personal Safety to use location while the feature is in use, and enable location sharing. Google says the watch can share your location during an emergency call when location permission is granted.
What happens after a detected fall
- After detecting a hard fall, the watch waits about 30 seconds.
- It then vibrates, sounds an alarm, and asks whether you want to call emergency services.
- If you do not respond, it vibrates and alarms again. After a further 60 seconds, it places a call and plays an automated voice message.
Google warns that “Fall Detection may not detect all falls.” High-impact activities can also trigger it. Treat the feature as a backup, not a substitute for other ways to get help. Timing and calls depend on connectivity and other factors.

If you place an emergency call by mistake, Google advises you not to hang up; tell the operator that you do not need assistance.

Can Pixel Watch call without a nearby phone?
It depends on the watch’s connectivity and the connection available where you are. Google’s emergency-call requirements distinguish Wi-Fi and LTE models:
| Watch setup | Phone needed nearby? | What the call requires |
|---|---|---|
| Wi-Fi model | Yes | A nearby phone connected to the watch over Bluetooth. Without that connection, the watch cannot be used to speak with emergency services. |
| LTE model | No | An active LTE connection. Some regions also require an active carrier plan or Safety Signal. |
Calls depend on network connectivity and may not be available in every country or language. An LTE label alone does not establish that your watch can place a call without your phone.

Safety Signal on eligible LTE watches
Google’s Safety Signal requirements state that the service is available only on LTE-enabled Pixel Watch 2 and 3, requires Google Health Premium, and is offered in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Germany. It provides connectivity for safety features when you are away from your phone and do not have a watch carrier plan. It is not available on Wi-Fi models, and carrier-related exclusions apply. Check Google’s current eligibility details and your own plan rather than assuming it is included with every LTE watch.
