Sometimes. Starlink’s Direct to Cell service is delivered through participating mobile carriers, so a compatible phone alone is not enough. In the U.S., T-Mobile offers the service as T-Satellite: check your exact phone against T-Mobile’s current supported-device list, confirm your plan or enrollment eligibility, and check coverage where you need it.
What determines whether it will work?
There are three checks: your phone must be supported, your carrier and plan must have access to the service, and you must be somewhere with satellite coverage and a usable view of the sky. A recent phone or an ordinary cellular subscription with a participating carrier does not by itself confirm eligibility.

- Check your exact phone. T-Mobile says most smartphones from the last four years work with T-Satellite, but not all. Use the device-specific check on T-Mobile’s T-Satellite page rather than relying on brand, age, or operating system.
- Check your carrier and plan. T-Satellite is T-Mobile’s Starlink-powered U.S. offering. T-Mobile also says noncustomers can enroll; the current plan and price details are below. If you use another carrier, confirm that it offers Starlink Direct to Cell for your country and plan. A February 2025 Starlink announcement named T-Mobile in the U.S. and One NZ in New Zealand for commercial satellite messaging at that time, but it is not a current global list of eligible carriers: Starlink’s announcement.
- Check the place you intend to use it. Satellite service requires coverage and a visible sky; terrain, buildings, and network conditions can affect connection. Use T-Mobile’s current coverage map for your location.
T-Satellite plans and enrollment
As of October 7, 2026, T-Mobile says T-Satellite is included with Experience Beyond 2.0 and Better Value plans. Other T-Mobile customers and noncustomers are offered enrollment for $10 per month. The service page says the subscription auto-renews monthly and can be canceled in the T-Life app. These plan names, terms, and prices can change, so verify the current offer on T-Mobile’s service page before enrolling.
How the phone connects
For an eligible T-Satellite user, T-Mobile says connection is automatic when ordinary cellular service is unavailable; no settings change is needed. The network name shown on the phone may appear as “T-Mobile SpaceX” or “T-Sat+Starlink.”

Starlink describes Direct to Cell satellites as functioning much like cell towers in space, using mobile operator partners’ LTE spectrum. In practice, that carrier relationship is why a Starlink satellite signal does not automatically make every phone or carrier eligible.
What satellite texting can do—and what it cannot
T-Mobile lists SMS, MMS and RCS messaging, location sharing, selected satellite-ready apps, and WhatsApp voice chat. Satellite data is lower-speed and has limited capacity compared with ordinary cellular service. The supported app list can change; check T-Mobile’s live page for the current list.

Messages may take longer to send or arrive. A phone may lose one moving satellite and reconnect to another; T-Mobile says it keeps trying in the background, but it also warns of coverage gaps, time-outs, and variable performance. Treat satellite texting as a way to get intermittent connectivity, not as a promise of immediate delivery.

Where T-Satellite is described as available
As of October 7, 2026, T-Mobile describes service in most outdoor areas of the U.S., Canada, New Zealand, and Japan where the sky is visible. Its FAQ also identifies the continental U.S., Puerto Rico, Hawaii, and parts of southern Alaska. These broad descriptions do not establish coverage at a particular address or in every terrain condition; check the current map on T-Mobile’s coverage page.

Do not rely on satellite texting as a guaranteed 911 connection
T-Mobile’s Text to 911 by Satellite is text-only. The carrier warns that emergency satellite messages may be delayed, limited, or unavailable, and that location accuracy may be affected. In some cases, a message may route to a national response center instead of a local 911 center. T-Mobile also says iPhone 14 and later have built-in satellite emergency service and are not eligible for T-Mobile Text to 911. Follow local emergency guidance and do not treat this feature as a guarantee of response.
