Windows 10’s Dynamic Lock uses a paired Bluetooth phone as a proximity signal. When you walk away and the phone leaves Bluetooth range, Windows automatically locks the PC—typically within about one minute. Open Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options, enable Allow Windows to automatically lock your device when you’re away, and then test it by carrying the phone away.
Dynamic Lock is a backup safeguard, not an instant or guaranteed replacement for pressing Windows key + L. Windows 10 reached general end of support on October 14, 2025, so eligible PCs should also be considered for Windows 11 or applicable Extended Security Updates. What Dynamic Lock does
Dynamic Lock monitors the Bluetooth connection between Windows and a paired phone. When the Bluetooth signal falls below the relevant threshold, Windows treats that as an indication that you have walked away and locks the device. Microsoft describes the expected timing as within one minute, not as an exact 60-second timer. The behavior and delay vary with the phone, PC adapter, interference, walls, and other environmental conditions.
Dynamic Lock does not use GPS, and it does not automatically unlock the PC when you return. You must sign in again with your password, PIN, Windows Hello, fingerprint, face recognition, or another configured method. What you need
- A Windows 10 PC with working Bluetooth, either built in or provided by a compatible adapter.
- A phone with Bluetooth enabled and power remaining.
- The phone paired in Windows Bluetooth settings—not merely visible inside another app.
- A configured Windows sign-in method.
- Bluetooth enabled on both devices during setup and testing.
- The phone close to the PC while pairing.
Some sign-in settings vary by hardware, Windows build, and device configuration. A work or school administrator may also restrict Dynamic Lock.
Pair your phone with Windows 10
- On the PC, open Start > Settings > Devices > Bluetooth & other devices.
- Turn on Bluetooth.
- Select Add Bluetooth or other device, then choose Bluetooth.
- Select your phone when it appears.
- Check that the pairing code shown on the PC matches the code on the phone.
- Approve the pairing request on both devices.
Windows build and language differences can slightly change the wording. The important result is that the phone appears as a paired Bluetooth device in Windows.
Turn on Dynamic Lock
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Accounts, then Sign-in options.
- Scroll to Dynamic lock.
- Select Allow Windows to automatically lock your device when you’re away.
Pairing alone does not necessarily enable the feature; this checkbox must be selected. Microsoft lists this location for Windows 10 and Windows 11 in its Sign-in options instructions.
Test it properly
- Leave the PC unlocked with the phone beside it.
- Confirm the Dynamic Lock checkbox is still selected.
- Walk far enough away for the phone to leave Bluetooth range.
- Wait approximately one minute.
- Return and check whether the Windows lock screen is displayed.
Do not expect an immediate lock after switching Bluetooth off. Dynamic Lock responds to a signal threshold and includes a delay. Range is not a fixed distance, so test in the room and conditions where you actually use the PC.
If Dynamic Lock does not work
The Dynamic Lock option is missing
- Check Settings > Devices > Bluetooth & other devices and verify that Bluetooth is present and enabled.
- Open Device Manager and look for a Bluetooth category or adapter.
- Install the latest Bluetooth driver supplied by the PC or adapter manufacturer.
- If the computer is managed, ask IT whether the feature is disabled.
You can open Device Manager with devmgmt.msc. The availability of sign-in settings depends on device configuration, according to Microsoft’s support guidance.

Windows cannot find the paired phone
- Confirm Bluetooth is enabled on the phone and that the phone is nearby.
- Unlock the phone and leave its Bluetooth settings available while testing.
- Turn Bluetooth off and on again on both devices.
- Restart both devices.
- Remove the phone from Windows Bluetooth devices and pair it again.
- Re-enable Dynamic Lock and repeat the physical out-of-range test.

The phone is paired, but the PC stays unlocked
Move farther away and wait the full approximate minute. A longer-than-expected Bluetooth range, intermittent detection, radio interference, building materials, unreliable drivers, aggressive phone power management, or a computer that is not idle can prevent the expected trigger. Microsoft documents the signal-threshold and idle conditions at Dynamic Lock technical behavior.

The setting is greyed out or managed by the organization
On work or school PCs, Group Policy or mobile-device management can control Dynamic Lock. Ask the administrator whether it is prohibited; do not bypass organizational controls. Microsoft Q&A reports this symptom in managed environments at this organization-managed Dynamic Lock discussion.
Avoid registry edits such as changing values under HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersionWinlogon. Such advice is version-sensitive, administrator-level troubleshooting and can disrupt sign-in behavior. Standard setup and re-pairing should come first.
Optional diagnostics
Administrators can open services.msc to inspect Bluetooth-related services or devmgmt.msc to inspect hardware and drivers. These tools are not required for normal setup.

Dynamic Lock’s limitations
- It is delayed: Microsoft says locking occurs within about one minute after the phone leaves range.
- Range varies: Bluetooth distance depends on hardware, interference, walls, and the environment.
- It is conditional: Microsoft describes locking when the signal falls and the system is idle.
- It does not unlock: Returning with the phone still requires normal sign-in.
- It is not immediate protection: Someone may access the PC before the signal drops and the lock occurs.
More predictable security options
Lock manually
Press Windows key + L whenever you leave. It is immediate and predictable. Microsoft recommends manual locking in its device-security guidance.

Set a short screen timeout or sleep interval so the PC locks after inactivity, even without a phone. This complements rather than duplicates Dynamic Lock.
Use Windows Hello
A PIN, fingerprint, or facial recognition can make returning to a locked PC faster on compatible hardware. Windows Hello improves re-entry; it does not replace the Dynamic Lock trigger.
Consider Windows 11
Because Windows 10 general support ended on October 14, 2025, upgrading is the longer-term choice for eligible hardware. Microsoft says eligible Windows 10 version 22H2 PCs can upgrade free when they meet Windows 11 hardware requirements. Consumer Extended Security Updates can protect eligible devices until October 12, 2027, subject to Microsoft’s edition, region, enrollment, and program terms.
Frequently asked questions
Does the phone need Wi-Fi?
No. Dynamic Lock uses the phone’s Bluetooth connection as the proximity signal. Wi-Fi is not the mechanism described by Microsoft.

Can I use a Bluetooth headset instead of a phone?
Microsoft documents Dynamic Lock around a paired phone. It does not guarantee identical behavior with headsets or other Bluetooth accessories, so a phone is the supported choice for this setup.
Does Dynamic Lock work on a desktop PC?
Yes, provided the desktop has working Bluetooth hardware and drivers and the phone can be paired with Windows.
Is it secure enough for confidential work?
Use it as an additional safeguard, not as your only control. Manually lock with Windows key + L and use an inactivity timeout for more predictable protection, especially in shared or high-risk spaces.
Will it still function after Windows 10 support ended?
The feature can still function, but unsupported Windows 10 installations no longer receive normal security maintenance. Follow Microsoft’s current lifecycle and upgrade guidance before relying on the platform for sensitive work.
