In OBS Studio, go to Settings → Advanced → Network and enable Dynamically change bitrate to manage congestion (Beta). When your connection cannot keep up, OBS lowers the outgoing bitrate instead of dropping frames for that reason. The tradeoff is lower image quality, and the setting does not fix the underlying network problem.
What dynamic bitrate does—and what it does not
OBS’s congestion adjustment acts on the stream leaving your computer: it reduces bitrate when the connection cannot sustain the configured rate. That can help preserve continuity during congestion, but a lower bitrate means less data for each second of video, so detail or motion may look worse. OBS describes the feature as a way to lower bitrate rather than drop frames; it also cautions that this is not a root-cause fix and results in reduced video quality. The option is marked “Beta” in OBS’s connection troubleshooting guidance (OBS Project connection troubleshooting, dated September 30, 2024).

Use it as a fallback when you cannot resolve an intermittent connection problem—not as a substitute for choosing a sustainable bitrate, a reliable route to the ingest server, or a sound local network.

Turn on the OBS congestion setting
- In OBS Studio, open Settings → Advanced → Network.
- Tick Dynamically change bitrate to manage congestion (Beta).
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Stream a representative test and watch OBS’s connection indicator and dropped-frames counter. If image quality falls during congestion, that is the expected tradeoff; if dropped frames persist, continue troubleshooting rather than assuming the setting has solved the cause.
OBS labels the option as beta, and labels can vary by installed version. If you do not see it, check the Network section of the Advanced settings in your installed OBS version and consult the current OBS guide before relying on an alternative setting.

Diagnose dropped frames in a useful order
OBS distinguishes dropped frames from encoding lag: dropped frames indicate a connection to the remote server that is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. A rising dropped-frames counter or a yellow/red connection indicator is a reason to investigate the connection and ingest route.
1. Test the ingest server
Try a different ingest server offered by your streaming service. A poor route to one server can cause trouble even when your general internet connection appears usable. For Twitch on Windows, OBS mentions TwitchTest as a way to identify a server with a better quality score; use the current official Twitch guidance for service-specific details.

2. Set a bitrate your upload can sustain
Bitrate depends on stable upload capacity and the destination platform’s limits. OBS’s troubleshooting guide gives 75% of total upload speed as a good starting point—not a guarantee. Measure sustained upload performance under realistic conditions, account for other devices and traffic sharing the connection, and remain within the platform’s current ingest guidance.
For YouTube, its current encoder-settings page recommends CBR for RTMP/RTMPS. For H.264 at 1080p and 60 fps, YouTube lists 6 Mbps minimum and 17 Mbps recommended. These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not a universal target for every platform or a promise that a connection can sustain the rate. Check YouTube’s current live encoder settings for the codec, resolution, and frame rate you plan to use.

3. Compare another destination when it helps isolate the fault
If practical, test another streaming destination. A comparison may help show whether a problem is specific to one service or route, but it does not itself fix a service-specific connection issue.
4. Check local network settings and software
- On Windows, OBS suggests trying Network Optimizations and TCP pacing.
- Keep Bind to IP set to Default unless you have a specific reason to change it.
- Try IPv4-only only as a diagnostic step; if it makes no difference, restore the IPv4/IPv6 default.
- Temporarily investigate whether firewall or security software, a VPN, bundled network software, or outdated network drivers are interfering. These are possibilities to check, not assumed causes.
Refer to OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide for the current details and version-specific controls.

5. Check Wi-Fi, equipment, and the ISP
OBS recommends a wired connection because Wi-Fi can be unstable for streaming. If you currently rely on Wi-Fi, a sound Ethernet connection can remove wireless variability from the path; it will not fix congestion outside your home or a faulty ingest route. Modems, routers, cables, network cards, and other network devices can also be involved. If you are unsure whether equipment needs replacing, consult your ISP before buying or swapping hardware.

Broadcaster bitrate adjustment is not viewer adaptive quality
OBS’s dynamic bitrate changes the broadcaster’s outgoing feed when the connection cannot keep up. YouTube’s transcoding is different: YouTube processes an incoming live stream into multiple output formats so viewers can watch at available quality levels on different devices and connections. One happens before the stream reaches the platform; the other happens on the platform for viewers.
Viewer experience also varies with location, device, and connection. OBS notes that lowering bitrate, resolution, or frame rate can be a reasonable audience-reach tradeoff, particularly where a platform does not offer transcoding. Use the destination’s current encoder guidance and test the stream before an event. OBS discusses viewer buffering and these tradeoffs in its viewer buffering guidance.
Test before going live
- Choose the destination, codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate using its current ingest recommendations.
- Run a test with the same kind of motion and audio you expect in the real broadcast; a static desktop does not reveal every issue that fast motion can expose.
- Watch OBS’s connection status and dropped-frames counter, and check the platform’s stream-health status and messages.
- If congestion recurs, enable OBS’s dynamic bitrate option as a continuity measure, then keep investigating the connection rather than treating the quality reduction as a permanent solution.
Or let it run in the cloud
Dynamic bitrate is for a live feed OBS is sending from your computer. If your goal is instead to keep uploaded videos playing as a 24/7 YouTube live stream, StreamNeo runs that playback in the cloud: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card.
StreamNeo is for uploaded video playback to YouTube, not live camera broadcasting. Start a free first day by creating a StreamNeo account.
