You can use Dropbox videos in an always-on YouTube stream by making the files available to an encoder running continuously on a computer, or by choosing a cloud streaming service that accepts Dropbox as a source. The local approach gives you more control but depends on your computer and internet connection staying online. A hosted service moves that work to the provider, but its Dropbox support, plan requirements and recovery behavior need checking.
Choose how the stream will run

A Dropbox shared link is not necessarily a direct, durable media URL. A link that opens in a browser may not work with a particular encoder or streaming service. Dropbox documents link options, but does not promise that ordinary shared links are a 24/7 streaming CDN.

Check YouTube eligibility and limits first
YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had a live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days to enable live streaming. Confirm eligibility before preparing a continuous broadcast. YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming
- YouTube allows up to 10 active streams per channel and up to 3 active streams per stream key at the same time. These are simultaneous-stream limits, not limits on how many videos you can upload or schedule. YouTube Help: Create a live stream with an encoder
- A stream key connects an encoder or streaming service to the YouTube broadcast. Keep it private; anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to your stream.
- Only broadcast videos you have the necessary rights to use. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content and may interrupt or terminate a stream when it detects a match. If you have a license for third-party content, YouTube recommends asking the rights owner to allowlist your channel through Content ID. YouTube Help: Copyright issues with live streams
Prepare Dropbox access for the video
Use a shared link only if the receiving service accepts it
Dropbox documents two query parameters that change how a shared link behaves: dl=1 forces a download, while raw=1 bypasses the preview and renders the file in a browser. Dropbox says an application using a raw=1 link must follow redirects. Preserve the link’s existing access settings and permissions; adding a parameter does not override them. Do not assume that a Dropbox shared link can be pasted into OBS or another service and will play continuously. The encoder or service must accept the URL, follow any redirects and be able to access the file under its sharing permissions. Test from the same account or service that will consume it.
Use the Dropbox API for an authorized integration
If you are building a custom workflow, Dropbox provides a shared-link file endpoint that returns file content and requires the sharing.read permission scope. Its temporary file links can be used to stream content, but expire after four hours; a long-running integration must renew them before expiry rather than treating one as a permanent stream source. Run the stream with a local encoder
This route uses a computer that can access the Dropbox media and remain on for the entire broadcast. The exact OBS source configuration depends on how the file is available locally; the sources do not verify a Dropbox-specific OBS integration, so do not rely on a shared link as a direct OBS input without testing it.
- Enable YouTube live streaming. In YouTube Studio, follow the live-stream setup flow and confirm the channel meets YouTube’s verification and restriction requirements. Complete any activation step YouTube presents before planning the broadcast.
- Make the video accessible to the encoder. Use a local copy or another file source that the encoder supports. If using a Dropbox shared link with a separate consuming application, confirm the link’s permissions, whether it needs
dl=1orraw=1, and whether the application follows redirects. - Set up the live stream in YouTube Studio. Create or select the broadcast and copy its stream key. Do not expose the key in a public document or share link.
- Configure the encoder. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, choose YouTube as the service, and enter the stream key (or use the available account connection flow). Add the video using a source OBS can actually read, then configure the video and output settings for the file and the upload connection. The reviewed sources do not specify a universal resolution, bitrate or keyframe interval for this Dropbox workflow; use YouTube’s current encoder guidance and the limits of your upload connection rather than guessing a fixed setting. - Start and verify the broadcast. Start streaming from the encoder, then check YouTube Studio for the incoming signal and preview before making the stream public. Confirm the video plays and audio is present.
- Keep the full local setup running. The computer, OBS, the file source and the internet connection all need to remain operational. Watch encoder and network health; an unstable connection or a bitrate it cannot sustain can cause dropped frames.
Plan for a repeating playlist
For an always-on channel that cycles through several videos, use an encoder or playback workflow that supports a playlist and looping, and test the transition between files before leaving it unattended. A single shared link is not a playlist manager. Check that every item remains accessible and rights-cleared, and that a failed or unavailable file does not leave the broadcast stalled.

Troubleshoot common failures
- YouTube will not let the channel go live: Check channel verification and whether a live-stream restriction occurred during the previous 90 days. Follow the activation flow shown in YouTube Studio.
- The encoder cannot open the Dropbox file: The link may require sign-in, have restricted permissions, point to a preview rather than a consumable file, or redirect in a way the application does not handle. Test
dl=1orraw=1only where appropriate, and confirm the receiving application follows redirects. - The file stops working after several hours: If your integration uses a Dropbox temporary link, it may have expired after four hours. Renew it before expiry; a temporary link is not a permanent source URL.
- The stream drops frames or disconnects: Check the encoder’s network status and whether the upload connection can sustain the configured bitrate. OBS identifies unstable connectivity and an unsustainable bitrate as causes of dropped frames.
- YouTube interrupts the broadcast for a copyright match: Check the matched segment and confirm you have rights for every audio and video element. If licensed third-party material is involved, contact the rights owner about Content ID allowlisting; a license alone does not guarantee a live stream will avoid interruption.
- You cannot start another broadcast: Check whether the channel already has 10 active streams or the stream key has 3 active streams. Stop unused sessions before retrying.

A local encoder may avoid a separate streaming-service fee if you already have suitable hardware, but it requires a computer and stable internet connection to stay available.
