What a cron restart can—and cannot—do
Cron runs scheduled commands. It does not know which FFmpeg process belongs to your YouTube stream, detect whether that process is healthy, or confirm that YouTube is receiving video. Put process management in a script that targets the intended instance, then use cron to run that script at a chosen time. A timed restart interrupts the stream, so schedule it only if that interruption is acceptable.

A fixed schedule is different from recovery on failure. FFmpeg also documents FIFO output recovery attempts for temporary network failures; that can address a transient output interruption without a scheduled full-process restart. Get the YouTube output details and test FFmpeg
Find the current stream URL and key
In YouTube Live Control Room, open the stream’s encoder setup and copy the server URL and current stream key. Your FFmpeg output needs both. A stream key functions like a credential: do not publish it, commit it to a public repository, or expose it in logs. If you reset the key, update the encoder configuration before restarting. Run the exact command manually first
Use the command and input you intend to run unattended, with absolute paths to FFmpeg and local files. Substitute your actual server URL and key in a protected configuration; this illustrative shape deliberately uses a placeholder:

Select codecs, resolution, frame rate, keyframe interval, and bitrate appropriate to your source, available upload bandwidth, and YouTube’s current settings. YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS encoder workflows and recommends RTMPS where supported. Check its encoder settings and stream quality recommendations, then monitor stream health while testing.

-nostdin prevents FFmpeg from trying to read console input, which is useful for unattended operation. Use -re when pacing a file input at its native frame rate for live streaming. FFmpeg cautions against applying a low read rate to an actual live input, since it can cause packet loss; do not add -re blindly to a capture device or network feed. Build a restart script that targets the right process
Choose process identification before scheduling
Do not use a broad command such as pkill ffmpeg if the machine may run other FFmpeg jobs. Use a dedicated service manager, a PID file managed by the stream process, or a carefully constrained process match that uniquely identifies this stream. The right mechanism depends on your Linux distribution and deployment; cron does not prescribe a universal restart script.

Script outline
Save a script such as /absolute/path/restart-stream.sh, owned and executable by the account that runs the stream. The following is a framework, not drop-in process-management code: replace the marked stop/start logic with the PID-file, service-manager, or validated process-matching method for your system. Keep credentials in a protected configuration file rather than embedding them in a public example.

Ensure the script handles a missing or stale PID safely, waits for shutdown before starting a replacement, and records FFmpeg errors. Restrict permissions on the script, configuration, and logs if they contain or could reveal the stream key.

Confirm the machine’s timezone and cron implementation, and account for daylight-saving changes if the restart must happen at a particular local time. Cron day-of-month and day-of-week matching has specific behavior; consult the crontab reference before building a more complex schedule. Use absolute paths because cron’s environment may differ from your interactive shell.
Verify delivery, not just process launch
- Run the script manually as the intended account and inspect its log for the stop, start, and FFmpeg diagnostics.
- Test the actual cron entry and confirm the scheduled invocation appears in the log; check system cron logs if it does not.
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and confirm that the encoder is connected, the preview is moving, and stream health is acceptable.
- Check that the stream is viewable after the restart. A running FFmpeg process alone does not demonstrate successful delivery.

Choose between cron, output recovery, and a cloud service

Troubleshoot common failures
Cron runs but the stream does not restart
- Relative paths or missing environment: use absolute paths for FFmpeg, input files, configuration, and logs; run the script as the cron account.
- Script is not executable or readable: check ownership and permissions for the script and every required file.
- Stop logic misses the process: verify the PID file or process identity method, handle stale PID data, and avoid broad FFmpeg termination.
- Start happens before shutdown: wait for the intended process to exit before launching its replacement.
FFmpeg runs but YouTube shows no incoming stream
- Wrong URL or key: compare both with the current encoder details in Live Control Room. Update protected configuration after a key reset.
- Output settings mismatch: review protocol, container, codecs, resolution, frame rate, keyframe interval, and bitrate against YouTube’s encoder guidance and available upload bandwidth.
- Input pacing issue: use
-refor a file that should play at real-time speed, but not as a blanket setting for an actual live source. - Network or encoder error: inspect FFmpeg diagnostics and YouTube stream health; do not treat process existence as proof of a working broadcast.
Restarting interrupts viewers more than expected
Cron performs a time-based restart, so a stream interruption is inherent to this method. If the problem is a temporary network-output failure rather than a stuck or failed FFmpeg process, assess FFmpeg FIFO recovery instead. Choose based on the failure you need to handle and whether a brief interruption is acceptable.
