To reduce the interruption, arrange for the encoder to start when the operating system boots and to recover if the process fails, then verify that YouTube is receiving a healthy stream. For planned restarts, reboot inside the operating system when it is reachable; Contabo says to reserve a Control Panel restart for cases where that is not practical.
What a reboot does to a YouTube stream
A VPS reboot takes the server and its running processes down temporarily. If your encoder is sending video to YouTube from that VPS, its connection ends during the restart. A recovery setup can bring the encoder back after the operating system starts, but it cannot make the reboot itself disappear or guarantee that viewers will see no interruption.

The practical goal is automatic recovery: the server boots, the encoder starts with its input and credentials available, the encoder reconnects as configured, and YouTube reports incoming video. The exact reconnect behavior depends on the encoder and broadcast setup; the official Contabo and YouTube documentation does not promise that a particular encoder reconnects automatically.
Choose the safer reboot method
When the operating system is reachable
Use the operating system’s normal reboot procedure when you can still access the VPS. Contabo advises considering an in-OS reboot if the server remains accessible, because a sudden shutdown can cause problems.

When you cannot reboot inside the VPS
Contabo’s Control Panel can shut down and restart the server. This is a provider-level power action rather than a graceful request made from inside the guest operating system, so use it when the OS is unavailable or an in-OS reboot is not possible. Contabo warns that sudden shutdown should be a last resort. See Contabo’s reboot guidance.
Prepare the encoder to recover at startup
Plan for both operating-system startup and encoder-process failure. The encoder needs to launch after boot and be configured to recover if it exits unexpectedly. It also needs access to the media it streams, the required credentials, and a working network connection.

- Boot startup: Configure the encoder using the service manager or startup mechanism appropriate to your operating system and encoder.
- Failure recovery: Configure the process supervisor or service manager to restart the encoder after failure, using settings supported by your specific software.
- Startup dependencies: Ensure the media source is mounted or otherwise available, credentials can be read, and networking is ready before the encoder tries to connect.
- Retry behavior: Confirm that the encoder retries the YouTube connection when it becomes available. Do not assume a process restart also guarantees successful ingestion.
Contabo documents cloud-init user-data scripts that run at boot, but that alone does not establish the correct service configuration for every distribution or encoder. The title does not specify an operating system, service manager, or encoder, so a universal copy-and-paste service definition would risk using the wrong settings. Check the documentation for your specific software before configuring startup or retries. Contabo’s VPS documentation describes its available VPS features.
Check the stream after a restart
- Confirm the VPS is running and reachable. Check the Control Panel and then connect to the server using your normal access method.
- Confirm the encoder process is running. If it is not, inspect the relevant service or process logs and check whether a startup dependency, media path, credential, or network issue prevented it from launching.
- Confirm the input is available. Check that the encoder can access its source media and any required files or credentials.
- Check YouTube’s stream status and health. A running VPS does not prove YouTube is receiving video smoothly. YouTube’s LiveStreams API exposes stream status and health information to help diagnose ingestion.
- Review the ingestion configuration. YouTube documents primary and optional backup ingestion addresses. A backup address helps only if your encoder and broadcast setup are configured to use it; its existence does not prove automatic failover or reconnection.
YouTube’s health documentation defines videoIngestionStarved as insufficient incoming video for smooth streaming, which can cause viewer buffering. If this appears after recovery, investigate the encoder’s output and connection rather than treating the VPS being online as proof the broadcast is healthy. Use Contabo recovery controls for server problems
Contabo lists VPS panel controls such as start, stop, and restart, as well as snapshots and a rescue system. A rescue system can help you access and repair a server that will not boot normally. A snapshot can support server recovery, but neither snapshots nor rescue access keeps a broadcast live during a reboot. See Contabo’s rescue-system instructions.
Troubleshoot a stream that does not return

Test recovery before relying on it
Run a planned restart when a brief interruption is acceptable. Verify the full chain—VPS startup, encoder startup, input availability, connection to YouTube, and YouTube stream health—rather than checking only that the VPS responds. Record any manual steps you needed; those identify gaps in the recovery setup. Exact interruption duration and reconnect results depend on the server, encoder, network, and YouTube ingestion state, so do not treat a successful test as a guarantee of zero downtime.
