Claude Code can help organize and search an Obsidian vault by working with its Markdown files on disk. There is no dedicated Claude Code–Obsidian integration documented in the sources here: treat it as a file-based workflow, give it clear boundaries, and review changes in Obsidian. Use Obsidian Search for precise filters such as tags or paths; ask Claude Code to inspect multiple notes when you need a natural-language summary.
How Claude Code works with an Obsidian vault
Obsidian notes are Markdown-formatted plain text files, and Obsidian can refresh after those files are changed by another editor. That makes a vault accessible to a command-line coding assistant such as Claude Code, but it does not mean Claude Code natively handles every Obsidian feature. In particular, do not assume an external edit will reproduce Obsidian’s graph, backlinks, or other in-app behavior. Obsidian explains how it stores data.

Claude Code is designed to run from a project directory. For current installation requirements and authentication steps, follow Anthropic’s setup instructions, which may change over time. To work on a vault, open a terminal in its folder and start Claude Code:

claudeReplace the example path with the actual vault location. If the vault is elsewhere, Claude Code’s CLI provides --add-dir to add a directory it may access; check the current syntax and behavior in the CLI reference. Before approving access or edits, confirm which directory is in scope.

Set vault rules before asking for edits
A project-level CLAUDE.md file gives Claude Code recurring instructions for this vault. Anthropic documents project memory in ./CLAUDE.md and user memory in ~/.claude/CLAUDE.md; project instructions are appropriate for conventions that should apply only to this vault. See Anthropic’s memory guide.
Start with rules that preserve the vault’s existing organization rather than imposing a new taxonomy:

- Treat this directory as an Obsidian vault of Markdown notes.
- Preserve existing note content, YAML frontmatter, tags, and internal links unless I explicitly approve a change.
- First report what you plan to change and which files are affected.
- Do not delete or rename files without asking.
- When organizing, prefer the existing folder and naming conventions.
- After changes, summarize edited files and any links or properties that need review in Obsidian.Start with a read-only inventory
Before requesting a reorganization, ask Claude Code to inspect and report without changing files. For example:

Inspect this Obsidian vault without editing, moving, renaming, or deleting anything. List the top-level folders, describe the naming and frontmatter patterns you find, and identify possible duplicate or orphaned notes. For each possible issue, include filenames and evidence from the notes. Then suggest a small, reviewable plan for me to approve.
This inventory-first approach is a practical safeguard, not a documented Obsidian-specific Claude Code feature. It gives you a chance to correct misunderstandings before edits begin.
Organize in small, reviewable batches
Choose one limited task at a time, such as finding notes that lack an established type property, proposing links for one topic, or drafting an index note from existing material. Ask Claude Code to list the files it intends to touch and show proposed changes before writing. Keep moves and renames separate from content edits so you can more easily identify what caused a broken link or unexpected change.

Preserve properties and frontmatter
Obsidian properties support text, list, number, checkbox, date, date-time, and tags values. Agree on a small, purposeful schema before asking for bulk changes; a property is useful when it helps people retrieve or interpret notes, not just because it can be added. Obsidian’s properties interface does not support nested properties, and bulk property editing is not part of its standard interface. See Obsidian’s properties documentation.

Obsidian supports both Wikilinks, such as [[Three laws of motion]], and Markdown links, such as [Three laws of motion](Three%20laws%20of%20motion.md). Obsidian can automatically update internal links when a file is renamed. For that reason, have Claude Code propose renames separately, then inspect the affected notes and links inside Obsidian rather than assuming an external change will have the same effect. Choose the right search method
Use Obsidian’s Search core plugin when you need an exact filename, path, tag, property, or other supported filter. Use Claude Code when the question calls for reading across notes and synthesizing what they say. These are complementary retrieval methods, not competing search engines.

Obsidian Search also supports block and task searches along with file, path, content, tag, property, and section searches. Its results omit files matched by the vault’s Excluded files settings, so a missing result may mean a file is excluded rather than absent. Consult Obsidian’s Search documentation for the supported operators and syntax.
For a cross-note question, make the answer verifiable. Ask Claude Code to name the files it used and quote or point to the passages supporting its summary. This is a workflow recommendation, not a guarantee of accuracy: open the cited notes and check the context yourself.
Review changes before accepting them
Keep Claude Code’s permission prompts enabled. The CLI documents permission modes and warns that --dangerously-skip-permissions skips prompts and should be used with caution. Anthropic’s security guidance describes permission controls and the user’s responsibility to review proposed commands and changes. For a personal vault, ask for a plan first, inspect a diff or the edited files after each batch, and approve only changes you understand.
Back up the vault or use version control before large-scale edits. After a batch, reopen the affected notes in Obsidian and check frontmatter, tags, links, and the rendered result. If something is wrong, use your backup or version history to restore the files before continuing.
