How to Use Chrome Headless to Capture Website Thumbnails in Bulk

Chrome Headless captures one page at a time; learn how to wrap it in a Puppeteer batch that saves consistent, uniquely named website thumbnails.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Chrome Headless can capture a website screenshot, but its documented command is for one page at a time. To make thumbnails in bulk, wrap that command in a script that reads URLs, sets a consistent viewport, assigns each image a unique filename, and records failures. Chrome’s CLI handles the rendering; your script handles the batch.

Capture one thumbnail with Chrome Headless

Start by verifying that Chrome is installed and that its command-line executable is available as chrome in your shell. The exact executable name and installation path can vary by operating system. Chrome’s documented example is:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

chrome --headless --screenshot --window-size=412,892 https://example.com/

This saves a PNG named screenshot.png in the current working directory by default. The viewport dimensions in the example are 412 by 892 pixels; change them to the dimensions your thumbnails need. Chrome’s Headless command-line reference documents the screenshot and window-size flags.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The default filename is suitable for a single capture, but every URL in a batch needs a different output path or a later screenshot can overwrite an earlier one. The basic CLI does not itself provide a bulk mode or filename policy.

Build a bulk capture script with Puppeteer

For a repeatable batch, use a script to launch Chrome, navigate to each URL, capture a screenshot, and save it under a unique name. Puppeteer is one documented way to automate Headless Chrome; the URL loop, output naming, and failure policy are application logic. The example below uses Node.js and Puppeteer, writes PNG thumbnails at a fixed viewport, and continues to the next URL if one navigation or capture fails.

Install and prepare the URL list

  1. Install a current Node.js release and create a project directory.

  2. Install Puppeteer in that directory:

    npm install puppeteer
  3. Create urls.txt with one absolute URL per line, for example:

  4. Create an output directory named thumbnails, or let the script below create it.

Save and run the script

Save this as capture.mjs. It uses the URL’s position in the input file for deterministic, collision-resistant filenames within that run. The original URL is recorded alongside each result in results.json.

import fs from 'node:fs/promises';
import path from 'node:path';
import puppeteer from 'puppeteer';

const inputFile = 'urls.txt';
const outputDir = 'thumbnails';
const width = 412;
const height = 892;
const navigationTimeoutMs = 30_000;

const urls = (await fs.readFile(inputFile, 'utf8'))
  .split(/r?n/)
  .map(line => line.trim())
  .filter(line => line && !line.startsWith('#'));

await fs.mkdir(outputDir, { recursive: true });
const browser = await puppeteer.launch({ headless: true });
const results = [];

try {
  for (let index = 0; index < urls.length; index++) {
    const url = urls[index];
    const filename = `${String(index + 1).padStart(5, '0')}.png`;
    const outputPath = path.join(outputDir, filename);
    const page = await browser.newPage();

    try {
      await page.setViewport({ width, height, deviceScaleFactor: 1 });
      await page.goto(url, {
        waitUntil: 'load',
        timeout: navigationTimeoutMs
      });
      await page.screenshot({ path: outputPath, type: 'png' });
      results.push({ url, file: outputPath, status: 'ok' });
      console.log(`Saved ${outputPath} — ${url}`);
    } catch (error) {
      results.push({ url, file: outputPath, status: 'error', error: String(error) });
      console.error(`Failed ${url}: ${error.message}`);
    } finally {
      await page.close();
    }
  }
} finally {
  await browser.close();
  await fs.writeFile('results.json', JSON.stringify(results, null, 2));
}

Run it with:

node capture.mjs

The script captures the page after the browser’s load event, not after proof that every image, API request, or late-running widget is finished. A page can also remain visually incomplete even after that event. For sites with delayed content, choose and test a readiness condition that matches the page, such as waiting for a selector or adding a measured delay; do not assume one timing rule suits every site.

Chrome’s own documentation also shows Puppeteer and Selenium WebDriver as automation routes for Headless Chrome. Selenium may suit an existing Selenium setup; the available documentation does not establish a throughput advantage for either framework in bulk thumbnail jobs. Chrome’s Headless mode guide describes the architecture and automation examples.

Choose the right timing and screen controls

CLI timeout

For CLI captures, --timeout sets a maximum wait in milliseconds before --screenshot captures, even if the page is still loading. For example, --timeout=5000 caps that wait at five seconds. It is a bound, not a guarantee that content has finished rendering.

Virtual time

--virtual-time-budget advances page time for time-dependent code such as timer callbacks. Chrome’s example uses --virtual-time-budget=42000 to fast-forward 42 seconds of page time. This does not guarantee that network-backed content has arrived or that the page is ready; inspect results for the sites and conditions in your batch.

Viewport versus virtual screens

Use --window-size=WIDTH,HEIGHT for the ordinary task of controlling the screenshot viewport. Screen emulation—such as configuring display scaling, orientation, or multiple screens—is a separate feature. Chrome documents --screen-info and Puppeteer/CDP screen controls for that purpose, with stable Chrome availability beginning at version 142. See Chrome’s virtual screen configuration guide if the job requires screen-level emulation.

Make the batch dependable

  • Keep output names unique. Use a stable record ID or sequence number rather than a raw URL as a filename; URLs can contain characters unsuitable for paths and may collide after sanitization.
  • Keep a result log. Record the input URL, output path, and success or error. That makes it possible to rerun only failed URLs instead of losing track of partial batches.
  • Set an error policy. Decide whether a failed navigation should stop the whole job or be recorded while the script continues. The example continues and writes a summary when the batch ends.
  • Validate image consistency. A consistent viewport controls the page’s layout dimensions, but responsive breakpoints, page content, and late-loading elements can still make images look different.
  • Control concurrency deliberately. The example processes pages sequentially. Running multiple pages in parallel may reduce elapsed time, but it also increases resource use; the cited Chrome documentation does not provide comparative throughput figures or a recommended batch size.
  • Plan for reruns. Keep the URL input and result log with the output set. For recurring captures, decide whether a new run should overwrite prior files or use a dated output directory.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to do
chrome: command not found or executable launch failure Chrome is not installed, or the executable is not on the shell’s path. Install Chrome or use its full executable path. In a Puppeteer project, check that installation completed and that the script can launch its bundled browser.
Every capture becomes screenshot.png The CLI default filename is reused for each command. Assign a distinct output path for each run using the CLI’s output-path option if available in your installed version, or use Puppeteer’s page.screenshot({ path }) as in the example.
Navigation times out The site is slow, unreachable, or waiting for a navigation condition that does not occur. Check the URL and network access, then adjust the timeout to a justified bound. In Puppeteer, choose a suitable navigation wait condition; avoid treating a larger timeout as proof of readiness.
Thumbnail is blank or missing late content The capture happened before relevant page content rendered, or the site returned an error or bot check. Open the URL in a browser to verify what it serves. Wait for a meaningful selector or test a delay; review the screenshot rather than assuming elapsed time guarantees loaded content.
Some thumbnails overwrite others Output names are not unique across the input set or across reruns. Use a stable ID or sequence number and, when preserving older runs, a separate output directory per run.
Images have inconsistent dimensions or layouts Viewport settings differ, or pages use responsive layouts and dynamic content. Set the same width, height, and device scale factor for every page. Use screen configuration only when the task requires display emulation beyond a viewport.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo offers a screenshot API and MCP server. A single request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF, and the service can capture one URL per request or accept bulk capture calls for up to 100 URLs per call. Its clean-shot processing accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses report the page verdict and billing status in headers. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, or other MCP clients.
