ChatGPT offers two ways to preview clothing and accessories: choose Try on on an eligible product listing and use a selfie, or upload a photo of an item in a chat and ask how it might look on you. The result is an image preview—not a size recommendation or a promise that the item will fit.
How do I use ChatGPT virtual try-on?
- Open a clothing or accessory product listing that displays Try on. The control is available on eligible listings, not necessarily every product listing.
- Select Try on.
- Take a selfie or upload one when prompted.
- View the generated try-on image.
OpenAI says the preview is created with ChatGPT Images. Its Shopping with ChatGPT Search help page describes this listing-based flow. OpenAI announced virtual clothing and accessory try-on in its October 1, 2026 release notes.

How do I try clothes on with ChatGPT?
You can also begin with a photo of an item rather than a product listing. In a ChatGPT conversation, upload a picture of the clothing or accessory and ask ChatGPT to show how it could look on you. This route starts from the image you provide; it does not require the item to appear in a listing with a Try on button.

OpenAI’s general ChatGPT Images help page covers uploading an image and describing an edit. It says Images is available on web, iOS, and Android, but that general availability information does not establish that the try-on control appears for every account, listing, or region.

Can I upload a picture of clothes and see how they look on me?
Yes. Upload a photo of the clothing or accessory in a conversation and ask ChatGPT to show how it might look on you. OpenAI documents this as an alternative to choosing Try on from a product listing. Treat the output as a visual preview: the help guidance does not promise an exact match for the item or your appearance.
Does virtual try-on tell me my size?
No. OpenAI’s guidance states: “Try-on images may not represent the product or your appearance exactly and do not guarantee fit or size.” A generated image is not a body measurement, size recommendation, or proof of how the material, color, drape, or construction will look in person. Before buying, check the merchant’s measurements, product details, and return policy.

OpenAI says reference photos are saved for future try-ons. To change or remove them, go to Settings → Personalization → Reference photos.
